Try putting your buds into something like a pill bottle together with a quarter or a couple of nickels. Shake vigorously for a minute. Done.

Or, put the nugget in the Solo, hit once or twice, dump and crush the load up with your fingers. Done.
Thanks, I will try the trick with the pill bottle. Is it limited to American currency? Just kidding :p

I noticed the stress fractures happen on my SOLO long before ever dropping it. I'm under the impression that its the wight of the SOLO continually putting stress on the screws as you set set it down upright. I installed a small piece of leather on the bottom to cushion the shockwave. The base screws are long enough to screw threw the leather and into the base.

You're not concerned about the vents on the bottom being blocked? Looks dope BTW!

Thank you! I did at first. I noticed that it had vents at the top where the actual heating element was so I wanted to see how it operated with the bottom vents blocked. I've operated my SOLO a few months like this and haven't noticed any difference between a SOLO with the bottom exposed. I'll continue to use it this way and will report my findings if anything changes occur.

Your call, of course, but those holes didn't get there because they were left over or to make the part cheaper, stronger or lighter.

The 'finding' you're likely to find is premature failure of the battery or catastrophic failure of the charging circuit, both without any outward warning. Charging (rather than operating) was where I found the biggest temperature rises, not that I couldn't have missed a hot spot or two.

For the time being I'm recommending not blocking vents (both generally and in this specific case) nor defeating any similar obviously designed in features unless you now better........

I like the leather idea, but the self adhesive rubber and self adhesive felt pads some of us have been using (with a window in the center for the vents) also work well, and are not harmed by water.

Well I went ahead and jumped on board the Solo bandwagon. Vape Life Will's youtube review sold me on it. That dude rules. Anyway, my MFLB just wasn't giving me the punch I needed. I've tried the Volcano and man that thing hits. Failed to pull the trigger on a couple E-Nano's that looked nice and somehow ended up here. I figured, 1200 pages? These guys can't be wrong. Honestly, I don't think I've seen one bad word about the Solo. Definitely smaller than you think it's gonna be which is great but I must say, worth every penny. I got the deal from myrubbernecker btw who is actually in my neck of the woods so that's nice. Now I gotta figure out how to hook it up to my infamous bubbler. I'll probably end up getting something off Ed. I'll definitely be chatting it up with you guys in here I'm sure!

Thanks for the nice reply and the useful tricks!

I read about the different temperatures people use it at. I think I will start low and work my way up like you said because I don't want to underestimate the Solo

How good does it work with intact buds? I'm looking into grinders right now but I don't want to spend a lot right now to get a Santa Cruz Shredder, Space Case or Mendo Mulcher. Otherwise I have to order the grinder that comes with the volcano. I heard it is works pretty good and is dirt cheap so I can save up for a nicer one.
It works fine with intact buds, though you'll need to change your technique a little bit. IMO it's easier to get familiar with how it operates as intended (with ground nug) and then try the whole nug. Grinders are nice though if you don't have one a shot glass and scissors work fine as well, as does the pill bottle trick though you'll need to have dry dry buds for it to work better. The Volcano grinder works fine as well, just works better with dryer bud as it lacks the sharp teeth that metal grinders have for tearing through bud with higher moisture content (if it feels like it's tearing/shredding instead of grinding it's too moist!). Worst case Ontario you may suck up little flecks of material with no screen if they're small enough to flow through, but after the stem starts to build up with a little bit of reclaim it turns sticky and likely will catch whatever flows through. 1/2" stainless steel screens are my recommendation, or 5/8" screens that you can dome a bit.

You could use a leather punch to punch a grid of holes in the vent area.

You've noticed your solo warming up from charging? Mine is dead cold usually when charging. Also, vents would do very little with no airflow. I am also aware they are there for a reason but most likely it is to improve airflow.

I actually said 'temperature rise', but yes, warming fits too. Charging the battery makes it hotter, especially at the very end of the charge ('topping up'). I would imagine the worst case being running the vape for several sessions at highest level (like making a battery test run) so that conduction through the case gets the works as hot as possible then putting it straight on charge.

For sure blocking the vents will hamper cooling, and probably a lot percentage wise. Hot air can't get out the top if cool air can't come in to replace it. Like opening a single window on the house.

It can definitely get hot in there, you do know there's a thermal safety inside the battery pack, right? They put it in for a reason I think........ Blocking the vents isn't a good plan IMO. Unless you know more than the guy that put them there.

It remains your call, good luck with it.

You know I'd find it easier to focus on the information in your posts if it wasn't full of so much attitude. You sound like you are taking this a bit personal. After some research I found that the vents are there most likely to cool down the batteries as you draw air. Not while not in use. As you inhale it forces small amount of air to flow over the batteries to ensure the heat generated by use doesn't affect the batteries. Once again I'm sure it would do little to nothing to cool down the batteries while charging. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction but if you want to be helpful in the future I'd mind your tone.

Hey everyone, im tossing about between the solo and the firewood 2.1 at the moment (kind of leaning towards the solo). If I do indeed end up getting a solo im just wondering if anyone knows of any good deals from trusted sites. Im in Australia btw if that means anything (because of shipping prices and what not). I would like to spend the least amount possible haha. :leaf:

Is there anyplace in this thread that gives a general breakdown of the differences that cone with the different serial numbers of series of the solo ?
Or does it matter that much ?

Close enough for Jazz......

A minor correction on the last bit: light 7 comes on solid (flickers a bit sometimes) but the charge light is still flashing (it goes solid when 'full'). You want to grab it before the flashing charge light goes solid.

How's that for confusing?

So charge for about 8 hrs?

A good guideline IMO. "Overnight". Or say 4 (or more) hours after the light goes solid? Most of the good effect happens much faster than that as I understand it, but you only have to do it once, why not grab all the 'edge' you can?

Hey, welcome to 'the Club'. Enjoy the Solo, it's a great one for sure. Very pretty bottom, no scratches yet (something I'm sure I've never said to a man before.....).

Oh, yeah, don't loan money to Ataxian..........

No, no such definitive list exists. We have 'seen' examples of the same 'model number' (the maker has said it's not......) being radically different. It's their number.

The major difference is the 'use while charging' change earlier this year. All the new units seem to be in this group for some time now. With this comes larger holes in the bowl lowering the restriction (a change favored my many, but not all by a fair bit I think). Way back there were other versions (a ceramic bowl one included), some with different 'step sizes' but they are long gone.

Bottom line, what you buy new is the new style, and has been for some time with no other real changes found. And the numbers on the bottom are not a useful guideline.

Solo is made to enjoy, not worry about the number on the bottom.........

That is what I figured .
But the whole 'use while charging' makes me wonder being that I bought my solo this year and I can't do that !

Very interesting. You bought it new? About when? The 'open box' (return) units I got from PIU were all 'old type' (although one appeared new), but it's been a long time since I recall someone buying a new unit of the old style......

Did you buy it from a major Dealer (any chance it's old stock)?

TIA

I second that!!

Er, ah, yeah right. Second what?

Thanks. Wow, strange indeed. Are you sure it has small holes and won't run while charging? Too bad you don't have a PA to try. Some of us will think you truly scored there if so..........
