Arizer Solo

Ok just finished my first two bowels with my ceramic solo m102.
The smell is still there but its more like the smell of a hot iron.
doesn't really bother me. Before I vaped my herbs I trie a few "empty" draws from the solo with no material whatsoever having touched the solo - so "pure" hot air. There was this very faint taste similiar to the mentioned smell but not really much.
I then took my first bowel at stage 5.
Clouds: bigger than with aromed and volcano - smaller than verdamper (mind you i only put a fraction of the herbs i use in the verdamper.
Taste: better than volcano but not as good as verdamper or aromed - the funny taste i stated before did not affect a lot at least I did not tast it in the vape itself.

Conclusion:
I like this vape hits similar to verdamper and is portable.

So right now it a complete thumbs up - lets see what the headache does now LOL

rhygin,
Ok I got an email back from Kevin and this is what he said.

Thank you for your email. I watched your video, and there is only a 10 second difference between when your stainless steel unit reaches temperature and when your ceramic unit reaches temperature. Given the difference in actual temperature at each setting, this time difference makes sense because the ceramic unit runs slightly hotter, therefore it should take slightly longer to heat up. Your stainless steel unit appears to be functioning properly, and I am unable to open a warranty claim for this issue, as replacing your stainless steel unit with another will not change anything.

Kevin

I believe he is just confused and is talking about vaplexus's video that I included(which he is correct is the right way it should heat up). Because my ceramic is for sure not 10 seconds behind the SS lol. He sent me this first thing in the morning and I sent an email back instantly. I have yet to hear back so I bet he realized that he was watching my comparison video instead of mine.

I just watched that video again and the difference in full heat up time was actually 41 seconds (1:30 into the vid the SS is on 7, while it took until 2:11 for the ceramic).

exactly!! Even if he is talking about when the SS reaches 2 and then the ceramic reaches 2 which I counted as 19 or 20 seconds. I still haven't received anything from them so they better be figuring some shit out.

Well just got my solo today. Hits like a beast but tastes and smells like a robot fart. Smells like a soldering workstation, like hot flux or something. The taste is very detectable, even over the taste of fresh herb. Has a "i just licked a circuitboard" kind of aftertaste.

Someone reassure me that this isnt a problem with all solos and my sense of smell and taste is just way above average. Cause i want there to be the possibility of getting one of these awesome-hitting vapes without the unpleasant stench and taste.

I've been trying to run the thing on max temp for almost a whole battery charge (holy hell it does last a while doesnt it?) to see if it goes away, but it may have lessened, but its still clearly present.

Suggestions?

hey all. i also just got a solo in the mail today. i just finished my first bowl and i like it alot.
i'm not noticing any type of smell yet.
i do have a couple of questions...

how do i stop small specks of my herb coming up through the stem?
and is the stem supposed to be loose? the stem isn't a perfect fit.

Since the glass stems are hand made, some will be loose or tight to varying degrees, but they should all function ok.

Cut a screen to put in the bowl if you don't want to inhale bits of ganja. I put screens in all mine and only remove them if I'm vaping a nug.

@Steiner: The taste will fade over time, but is still noticeable to me. It just doesn't bother me that much for some reason. Also, water filtration helps quite a bit to diminish the funky taste.

I got my replacement Solo today, the first one had the problem you describe and so does this one. This one didn't smell from the start like the other, but as soon as it heated up it did. 5 full temp cycles later and it's worse now I think. Both M104's if that's important. I'm done with the Solo. Happy for all that enjoy it, sad I'm not one.

Steiner:

You could screw off the top cap and try it that way. If the funny taste is gone without the cap on then bake the cap in an oven as described earlier in this thread.

That's exactly what worked for me. Be sure you remove the plug before you bake the top.

I left the cap off both my Solo's because I had read this thread. It made no difference. Either some of us are more sensitive to this smell/taste or it's only a few problem units. Funny I got 2 in a row, maybe it IS the former.

I had two in a row also and I'm not a sensitive guy. The first stunk bad, the second not so bad but doesn't stink since the bake. The serial numbers were about 200 apart so they were from the same lot. It's luck of the draw. I'm happy with my Solo, works well.

I dont think I'm that sensitive either but it did smell and taste like burnt electronics for a bit. burning it in helped. baking the cap helped a lot and just a good bit of use took care of the rest. Still a PITA. This shouldn't be an issue. If I ever take it apart I will bake the body too.

I Love this device though. Battery life is too short. I continue to use the EQ 4.0 very little compared to before when it was my daily driver. The solo and the omicron have totally changed my routine around in a very good way.

I've been waiting for your review. Robot fart is a reasonable way of putting it lol. It's been a problem with all of my solos, but you will find people here defending theirs to the death. Either they are lucky, many of us are very unlucky, or they are just not as "picky", but I don't view the taste and smells that I got out of mine as "being picky" if I can't even vape through it. Mine got worse, some people's got better. There are no real answers yet because Arizer won't be open with us and some info they gave contradicts info we have found etc. The best answer people can give now seems to be either keep trying for warranty exchanges as long as it takes until you are happy, or take your new expensive vape apart and cook it in the oven and hope it acts as robot laxatives.

Hey guys. It has been about 2 weeks with the solo which i have really enjoyed very much. But after my session this morning when I was dumping the ABV out I noticed a black flake. I look into the chamber and sure enough the ceramic flaking issue has begun. After reading this forum for months about the new SS bowl for a replacement I am a little sketchy about about emailing arizer. I dont want to waste my warranty on the SS bowl when I have read that its still not perfected yet. Users with the same flaking issue of your ceramic, are you satisfied with your replacement SS solo? or shall I wait it out until some minor adustments been made to the already to a great vape? I am also tempted to purchase a couple of 4 hole stems. How are people liking them in your ceramic solos?

I like both my flaking ceramic solo and my SS solo. I am switching between them and the 2 and 4 hole mouthpieces and I am still not decided which i like best. I have no issues with using the flaking ceramic solo simply because the ceramic doesn't get into my mouth and its innocuous enough. frankly, even if all the ceramic flaked off i don't think it would matter that much - its a very very thin layer.

What I think i like best is the SS head on the ceramic body. I switched them back to stock but i think the best configuration for me is SS head on ceramic body.

Thanks for youre replies and PMs everyone. I've been experimenting with the solo all night/morning. I found that removing the cap DOES indeed greatly reduce the funny taste, but im not so quick to just assume that it means that there is something on the cap that's causing the problem. My hypothesis for why the thing tastes better without the cap is that its able to draw fresh air from the outside more easily, and little to no air is coming up through the unit.

"But the air doesnt come up from the lower part of the unit, it comes in through those holes along the top of the cap" True and false. The majority of the air DOES come through those holes, but air is still coming up through the unit. if you blow through the bottom of your solo, in the holes around the power jack, you can clearly feel the air coming out the top (try it with the solo on max temp to more easily feel the heated air being blown out the top) - thanks to mattyg23 for pointing this one out. So logically this would mean that when you are inhaling with the cap on, the airflow is more restricted so theres more of a chance some would take the (admittedly, more restricted, but still present) airpath up from the bottom of the unit, making it flow over the electronics/battery areas, which i still think are what the smell/taste come from. The cap would also probably trap any fumes, or whatever causes this, when its on versus it being off.

But, i want to try all things, I really WANT to fully enjoy this vape cause its truly awesome in every other way. unfortunately, taste is just one of the, if not THE, biggest factor in how a vape performs. So i'm going to bake the cap, but its going to be a few days at least because my kitchen just so happens to be under renovations, so not oven access atm. But, for future reference, is there a way to take the plastic plug thing off in a way that i'll be able to put it back on? just in case i end up returning this unit.

What i DID try however, was rubbing the cap down with a paper towel with a tiny dab of iso on it. I was surprised when i looked at the paper towel after whiping the inside of the cap when i saw a blueish/greyish residue left behind on the paper towel. I wiped the rest of the inside, as well as the outside down and got a little bit more from both sides. Curious, i wiped the rest of the unit and got black residue, wiped it again and got more. Related to the source of the stink/taste or not i dont know. But i took a qtip and swabbed the inside of the housing thats down around the part under where the cap threads on, around the heating element, and, sure enough, i got more bluish/grey shit. So i'm wondering whats the furthers i can dismantle this thing w/o voiding my warranty? Or, should i say, whats the furthest i can dismantle this thing without someone else being able to prove that i did it, and void my warranty?

After i was done with the wiping, i let it run on max temp for a cycle then tried it. It seemed a bit lessened. Either way, using it through my ehle with the cap off, i cant taste anything funky at all. Even using it dry without the cap on i can barely detect anything in the flavor, unless i go above temp setting #4.

oh well.. time to go test some more :brow: i definitely feel like im making progress with this thing though.

I used a small paperclip and gently coaxed the small attachment out through the inside of the cap while gently pulling the plug from the opposite (outside) side of the cap. Be careful, the attachment is very thin and could tear but if you work at getting the little inside shoulder over the cap vent into the hole, mine came off easily. I'm not going to put it back on.
