Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
I decided this question belongs here instead of the ask FC thread because of the ages here:
None of my friends use marijuana although they did many years ago when younger. I'm from the era before designer herbs when a bit over $100 bought a lb of good quality herb. Friends often say, in spite of non use in over 20 years, that the herb now is much stronger than when they were young. Stronger herbs is not my experience so much as different experiences depending on the kind of herb and THC vs CBD. Just curious about other's experience.
Instead of going over the basic science that we have now and contrast to what was available, I'll go over the transitions, I've noticed. Changing attitudes ,etc.
I'd be happy to wane nostalgic for you like an old uncle for a moment. Just let me get comfortable in my recliner and I'll tell you some old war stories.:myday: Others please share. BTW. Light an old incense cone and turn on the radio just for the white noise (no station please), if you feel you have lost touch.

In middle school, I grew up with the few known grades of the 70's. Jamaican, Thai Stick, Panama Red, etc. (pretty anything in a Cheech and chong movie) and I had some intense 'Hawaiian' that put me in another dimension. That was my first 'trip weed' experience as some old timers will come to refer that as. Never heard the term until recent myself. But that is what the hip older set would start to call it in my area.

Most dramatic transition was when there was a price increase to $50 an 1/8 strains and Phish concerts were popular around this time. Pretty much 3 categories existed with their own subcatagories. 'The Dank' 'Nugs', B.C.-Middies-Mersh (short for commercial), Shwag - Dirt weed, Brick:disgust:
Brick weed (Crushed seeds, mold and all. Mold was allegedly supposed to make it more potent.)
B.C (British Columbia) became synonymous with dependable consistent midgrade grown for fast grow weight and sale.
Skunk - The most intense was 'skunk' in that time period. First 'one hit wonder' achieved. Too stupid to even talk.
Nugs were synonymous with indoor grown with labor and love. :luv: Anybody who got you nugs was going to tell you everything they can on how to grow nugs. People were starting to talk about keif and protecting the crystals more. If they only knew the magic that can be unleashed with vaping those precious trichomes. :brow:
The most intense was 'skunk' in that time period.
Shwag was in the process of eradication among 'purveyors.' Towards the end, If you had shwag, you dealt with a dirtbag. People were outright reject smoking it because it gave them headaches. I'd just bong it if I came across it and forge ahead.

Glass was getting into the whole aspect of decarbing with their designs. Metal was for shwag smokers. "If you loved your nugs, you will keep your glass clean." I would hear that often from some Phish-Deadhead. Glass fuming had more to experiment with. Multicolored fumed Bubblers were popular for a period. Now it seems to be about clear thick glass for vapor. Biggest Transition though was from recreational and experimental to medicinal and conservation. Trying to get more with less volume.
"The Hammer" - this is your standard stereotypical bubbler and spoon. Like the brass hash pipe 10 years previous. :peace:

Got out of the Army in 72.
I can remember commercial Mexican OZ. for $15
High quality Commercial Columbian (in Madison WI) for $35/oz.
Thai stick (the very first wave - '76?).
. . . and so on to the modern designer bud.

Vinyl albums whose covers folded out for cleaning herb and rolling fatties, seeds roll to the center seam.

Vaping for 3 years now and I can tell the difference for both my throat and lungs.

I remember the bud that was $50 an oz. back in the late 70s into the early 80s, it was the brown cannabis with a lot of seeds and stems. It had that earthy taste. Never knew the strain.

I didn't start knowing the strain until a couple years ago. I would clean out all the stems and seeds then use our roller and role it all into joints. Never got the hang of the art of joint rolling. I would use 2 papers (cut korners Zig zags) so it wouldn't burn up so fast. They were the thicker papers.

It took quite a while rolling all those joints, I can't remember about how many. A whole ounce worth.

Can't believe I forgot about this. 'Kind bud' was what the more expensive bud was called then. Because it was grown indoors under artificial lighting. If I remember the strains I'll post here. Used to get a bag of 'mids' AKA BC and of 'kind' bud. Due to the more potent strains, Pot smoking etiquette was emerging. Smoking a cresent or corner off of a bowl instead of 'housing' it became more of a thing. Offering a guest the first hit was the next part of the etiquette. Many were amazed when offered the first hit and the good habit stuck with some people. It was just starting to get more 'respectable' at that point.

I really like your ' pot smoking etiquette ' terminology .
And for me , it was when a joint started to ' canoe ' , burning
up one side of the joint . I would spit fix it ( eewww ) , so it doesn't
continue for the next toker .

The indoor grown with lighting was the Hydroponic phase .
Which really separated the Good MJ from the brown MJ you speak of .
And the art of growing/harvesting improved immensely to our benefit .

It's cool reading about you guys smoking when herb was just getting in the groove :)

I think there has been a general uptick in quality. I'm only 24, and started smoking when I was 16? We had "mids" but me and many people in my area agree that the mids then were in general just better quality than the mids that came by later. Nice lushcious green and kind of crystally.

Then we had "beasters" which was like a step up between "headies" or "kind/kine bud" Essentially low end good bud.

I went to college, and in college I had a kind of totally opposite experience on both ends of the spectrum. Mids, are now dirt brown seedy/stemmy brick bud. Good bud, is now namebrand quality amazing looking stuff.

I moved back home, I cannot find midgrade bud other than talking to guys at the bar in their 40s/50s smoking out of SS pipes. And good bud is a plenty, varying quality but it is all better than the stuff in high school and still some really killer buds around. Don't know if I just grew up and all my "connects" went to college and expanded their circles and thus had a better variety or what, but in high school it was a very rare treat to get something namebrand or exceptional looking, and now it is kind of the norm.

I remember the day I turned 17, my buddy had just gotten some Blueberry Yum Yum. As a 17 year old I was sold on it just cause of the Ludacris song. Some of the best bud I ever had to this day I think, and I have very great memories smoking it with my best friend. Only me and him smoked in our circle, so only he can relate to the quailty when we bring it up :) great memories. It was so potent it lasted us until the fall (my birthday is in May)

Whenever I go to garage sales, I sometimes check the old double LP's for remnants.

Familiarity and more people trying to sell probably reversed that.
Beasters AKA BC was almost a standard economical, break off exactly what you need, no nonsense weed. Until I moved to a College town and then I never seen beasters again. :hmm:Locally grown mids became the new baseline.

Especially now that it is laying down a whole new track! It really did evolve. Why I mentioned so much about the transition in attitudes at that time.
I really did not like combusting and was always trying to go cleaner, before I knew about vaporizers. Trying to 'cherry hit' and draw slowly to gently reignite the bowl.
This was before I knew what terpenes were. But I had some sort of sense at the time.:peace:

I get pretty consistent weed & even the "crap sativa" I have now actually vapes up well enough. Actually it is a pretty cruisy high but does not have that KO punch. I first started smoking in the early 90's & witnessed the change in Australian cannabis culture from a mostly outdoor grown crop to commercial hydro setups. I have no idea what it was except some of the most potent cannabis I have ever smoked I consumed between 1994-1999.

Things are more consistent & the quality benchmark is considerably higher today though. One year I grew a beautiful outdoor plant that I stunted to about 5.5'. I first found the plant when my mother started saying she did not want me growing dope in the backyard! I found a spindly stunted cannabis plant growing & jokingly decided to save it. A mate of mine was a horticulturist & fixed it up in a pot plant so I could move it. I found it a spot where it got sun for 10-12 hours a day & it grew into a mighty female. When I harvested it was a funky khaki colour & ended up being 7 or 8 big branches that were all full of buds. That was some truly strong weed as I remember it made the entire house stink as it dried .

Jesus I feel like Grandpa Simpson rambling on about things of no consequence. Kids this is what happens when you get old & post on FC under the influence :myday:

I remember when cannabis started getting better than "mersh", which was mexican brick weed. First it was columbian/mohican, then acapulco gold/panama red and occasional jamacian as well as thai sticks, which were real at first and then mostly fake. Then came "sensimilla", which was code for seedless female buds. Things really started ramping up with "hydro", and "kgb" being quite popular. The humbolt "indica" army changed the game in california. Through the darkest times, the dutch bravely kept the torch lit as far as specialized/medical strains being created and maintained. Finally states like california and colorado were able to create an environment that could take medical/strains to the next level. I fucked combustion the end!

I'm 23, I started using the herb at 15 close to my 16th birthday. I don't live where it's legal, but I grew up getting nice buds. I think I can count on my fingers the times I've smoked low end which is good because some of my friends have come into contact with some very terrible weed. It was often likened to bark the way it was compressed and even had black goo on it from time to time. I didn't partake in any of the sessions where that was passed around :rofl:It has helped me in so many ways especially with social anxiety

Compressed Bark ?
It sorta sounds like Jamaican weed that I was getting back
in the 90's . Everything compressed for easier shipping , stems
seeds and whatever trapped ( bugs ) inside . The buds would peel off
in flatten pieces .

With the exception of the Jamaican community , I'd really haven't heard about
Jamaican brick weed anymore . Even they prefer the newer , more potent
strains we have these days .

Is it possible for legalization in your area , in the near future ?
Maybe they're waiting on a smart 23 year old to start the process . :brow:

Yeah I guess it's still going around, maybe not Jamaican but wherever it came from I dont care about. :ko: As for legalization I'm not sure, hopefully medical passes here soon. I've seen bud rot, fiberglass buds, sugar coated buds, white webbed moldy buds. Pls legalize :rockon: haha

I'm 34, been smoking since 1994.

Weed was a LOT more potent in the 90s. I could not contain the smell whatsoever back then, and the trichs were amazing.

Today, medical bud is dominant, and it is piss poor quality compared to what I had in the 90s.
It's to the point I won't even look at flower anymore, just clear concentrates.

I just love it when I walk in a dispensary and they say 'this is the best bud you will ever smoke'.. roll eyes

Remember putting a report together for school and have to get out these? The neighbor would come over and borrow an encyclopedia too every so often. My mom and dad had a set.

When my 36 year old daughter was 1 1/2 years old a salesman came to the door and in a weak moment I bought the childcraft encyclopedia. It probably cost around the price of an inexpensive computer today. Like $350.
Sometime in the early to mid 1990s we bought our first computer.

The encyclopedia set was our wikipedia.

I don't know if this has been posted. This is how we carried our books in pre backpack days. My high school consisted of 2 buildings with 3 floors in each. I was as much a "klutz" back then as I am now. Trying to get from the third floor in one to the third floor in the other within the 15 minutes between classes, I sometimes dropped my heavy load of books.

You've got the wonderful Bob Snodgrass to thank for that. One of the original glass artists, he helped bring functional glass to the foreground of smoking culture. Love that man's work.

Kuckfumbustion,
You sir know how to cut a video.
Just watched your bong hit video: Kudos man, well played.
Can't take credit for recording it. Just watching and laughing and sharing. :haw:A found video that seemed to fit the topic so well. Right down to the UFO sticker on the bong. And Well, I liked the juvenile humor. That was cut with a camcorder back in the late 90's and was on the web back the day. Dial-up days. You want to know who can cut a video? --->Sr. High.

OMG. Thanks for jogging my memory! I was trying to remember my glass history.

My grandparants had that too, perhaps even the 1960 one pictured. Now Imagine getting a volume of these in the mail once a month. Then having it become obsolete 1 year later. That is the age we are about to live in.
I still have a children's encyclopedia that has all the illustrations done by one artist. No pictures even. Getting my hands on an Encyclopedia Britannica was huge.

Yup, my Mom was a teacher so we had World Books (encyclopedia) but I always wanted the Britannica - Macro & micro version that came out in the 70's.

So was that video a young Cuckfumbustion, or just a found artifact of the 90's? What I specifically enjoyed about it was the brevity of the individual shots. 5-10 second shots are generally one sign of a well made video/film.

This is a great point. Generally weed available to tourists in JA is schwag. But if you are patient and continue to pursue it there is Jamaican out there that will have you knee walking. As long as this is a nostalgia thread I'll share a war story.

I was in a Negril restaurant late one night. The owner (after the meal) asked if we'd like dessert.
I said I'd like a nice fatty that wasn't beach schwag. A few minutes later he produced a nicely rolled joint and I gave him the equivalent of US $5. It was possibly the most potent doobie I'd encountered in my entire life and as stated above made the walk home difficult. Point is there is still Lamb's-bread up in the hills but it doesn't get to the 7 mile beach as a rule.

Found artifact of the 90's. I'm guessing that it was shot sequentially with a camcorder, back in the day. No post editing. VHS recording.
Remember the VHS vs Beta wars? This is an artifact. BTW. I'm not trying to sell anyone a betamax machine. :D Check out the manual clock timer on the machine. Not even digital! Console even.
