Or it could be ill health, unsafe neighborhoods, a move to a new town. There are many ways to become isolated. In my case it's PTSD, but I keep coming on here instead of "embracing solitude" in the way that pleases the unkind. To my mind, this unkindness is "gross...and I think very ugly"...
