Filing them is also an option. I did this M10 x 25 with the 4.5mm edge of a flat file. Took only a minute or two. Just get it well clamped in the vice before you start.

This sounds very interesting. Any chance of some pictures? I bought several adapters from DHGate recently - mostly male/male 14 and 18mm - with a halo build in mind.
