This absolutely works, as long as your base product can support the effect you're looking for! Examples, A heavy indica will never really give you a full blown UP effect, like with a sativa, but you can definitely choose to extract in the lower temp range to avoid receiving the heavy sedation...

Or if you squeak when you walk like I do (referencing being a tight @ss), you can get a large slurpie straw, cut to approx the size of 1/2 the Solo stem, slit it up the side, open it and put it around the top of the stem. Fits nicely and I can change the colors.... meh, I don't really care...
