The battery sits deeper in the TM2 than in the TM1 so if you grind off that you'll potentially/probably end up with no contact between the battery and it's cover. On the contrary, the solution would be to add/solder a little nub in the middle of the TM1 battery door. Correct !

FWIW i only use the XL bowl lately (have all 3) because I find it needs a little bit less power from the torch in order to RTL and it works very well no matter how you fill that bowl (even with a few crumbs floating around)

I had this kind of problem with my first TM few years ago and the problem was that the potentiometer leg broke (some part of the temp dial was broken). If you want to check if this is it, you would have to enter calibration mode and see if the LED color change when turning the temp dial iirc
