Right on MacB. I've done it plenty. They realize this is an issue, so I would think the gen II iolites will look to address these things.

oddjobold,, good luck. We've all melted plenty of the old and the new mouthpieces. I have just learned to remove the melted stem piece quickly while the unit is still hot.

I'm sure the iolite people are working on something. No way they want the current bad press to continue. This is all helpful to them however, I'm sure. Power of the internet to improve products.

Wow Macbill. That's quite the modification! Good for you. If you had found a small piece of aluminum or brass threaded pipe that would have replaced the small plastic component, I assume that would have been preferred?

OK just opened the unit. Very nice inside but no method that I could see (after much inspection) to adjust temp. The thermostat is buried inside a sealed unit as far as I can tell.

Ugh. I'll look. I'd really like to drop my temp down a notch.

Has anyone heard of a way to adjust output temp? There may be a way, but I'm imagining it would involve peeling off the labels, removing screws and looking around in there. And invalidate the warrantee

Exactly. like just protruding 3/8" to get the rubber hose on it. Having something rigid would eliminate the whole issue. You wouldn't want your mouth on it, but we still have plastic for that.

I'm not so sure. I have felt that the general community is expressing the softening of the plastic causing the break. I know myself that the mouthpieces have sort of fallen off when hot, and definitely not snapped off as they would when cold. Look at all the pics of broken mouthpieces. They all...

Sounds great. My EXACT story. However, the new ones break / melt / soften perhaps worse than the originals. Currently there is no solution available.

Reece, what would that tell us? That the Ultem 1000 can get soft? We know the stuff gets soft. I have a feeling that while some units are cooler than required, others may be hotter than required. If the temp goes from spec target temp of 375F to maybe 400F, this might explain things also.

X is the new type, yes. I have no experience as to which works best. I have melted 2 old and 1 new so far. I get the feeling that iolite just designed this aspect poorly. This news is all over the internet, so they have a chance to fix this properly or this will become what they are remembered for.
