I thought of another question: Is the bottom switch a forward switch? (You can turn it on momentarily by pushing without clicking it on) Or is it a reverse switch? (You have to click it on all the way for it to turn on) I think for oil use a forward switch would be much better

Why can't it simply be in-parallel with the load? The heater isn't going to drop the battery voltage that much... The bottom battery is at one voltage and the other side of the switch (coming back from the heater) is at the other voltage when powered on right? You don't want the switch...

He must have forced the plastic dial to twist on the metal potentiometer rod. Trying to force it back the other way might break it... I think carefully redoing the sticker is probably the easiest solution.
