I received a “device too hot” message

I’ve had this occur 3 times

What are the Frolic & ambient temperature settings? Are you experiencing a heatwave?

Lol no man its not that complex. The temp was 385 F and it was at night. Normal temperatures where I live, probably 70F.

Most likely this is just a unit thing or possibly a battery thing since it was just in a charging state. Not environmental factors.

I got mine to Canada shipped from the UK. I think I paid about $27 in duties.

We didn’t have the same experience. Turned mine back on and it happened again, and shut off. Had to give it some time

I probably (almost certainly) recalled incorrectly. My original “device too hot” messages probably also occurred over the same span (before the device had a chance to cool).

This morning, I watched NorthernHigh420’s video on utube, and saw that he used On-Demand 464. For science, I cranked mine to 240C and got the ”device too hot” message and subsequent device off.

• Immediately restarted and tried again… same thing.
• Immediately lowered temperature to my usual 220C, and same thing.

Set down for a bit, and it’s back to working like a champ (at 220C on demand) again.

If it factors into the possible reason(s) why - I’m using regular S&B dosing capsules, with about 0.035g, the bent stem and airflow wide open.

Seems great again, after waiting a bit.

edit: Typo. Meant On-Demand 464.

Loving my Frolic. Tasty all the way until the end. Battery life is great too.

I messaged the company about two issues:
-Similar to someone else, my unit has a buzzing sound that pulses when in use. I believe there is a way to fix this.

-I received a “device too hot” message which caused it to auto shut off during a session. The other factors were
::the battery had been charging, got to maybe 75%. Pulled it out the external charger, and ran a session with a TM2 capsule. Did a second session, back to back with another capsule. That second capsule is when the message occurred. Turned it back on, and it happened again. Had to let it cool. This only happened one time, and I haven’t used the capsules since. May of been those, the battery, or unit.

I received it and globally liked it. Very well made and thought. My only concerns for the moment are that I have to draw a lot before the first visible vapor and that it doesnt quite cook as dark as I want and overheats quite fast at 240 when I try to get to that just before combustion dark brown ABV I like to finish a bowl. My final ABV seems pretty spent texture wise but it's light brown I would say. When I over pack it with the reduced ABV of 2 spent bowls I manage to get that darkside roasty hit and get darker.
The device too hot message is not an error because the device is too hot in hand to firmily but softly open and take a look at that too light ABV color without spilling everywhere from the shock.
Also to do this I need to fully pack and draw a lot with restricted airflow.
When trying to microdose my glass screens/reducers behave like heatsinks and don't help a lot for microdosing efficiency and battery life. But my vaping style is mid temp starting/high temp finishing microdosing oriented and not very well served by the big flat oven bottom to top of the load airflow crafty type chambers. That's why I own a lot of devices but no S&B.
I will continue tinkering with the settings at least for a few days to see if like for other vapes I kept I manage to find a routine that satisfies me .
The effects are strong though because after my day off testing the device for the sake of science ( gorilla glue 4 and durban poison ) I did a whitey on the sofa drank some sparkling water and wrote this too long wordy comment

Hash round number two with some Tree Flip. Oof.

Hit it harder and it kept up. More than I could. Just about had me throw up (that is a compliment) it hit so hard. I loaded less this cap but went after it much more confidently (harder).

It overheated and shut down on the third draw but I was babying it to give it extra priming. I know with tb2 the sensor you can't dry fire or you risk breaking it but it seems this can handle better by programming and design though if you dont pull enough air maybe it gets hotter faster. I like at least 50% open for hash. Having it at 10-30% for priming seemed to heat the device up too much.

I immediately restarted it and no more issue. Next draw was hard... on my brain.

I'm gone... It is so good. I really wanna try this inverted with my CC Oracle whenever it comes later this year. I bought this specifically with that glass in mind but man I don't know if I will actively even want to try one of my other devices for a while.

Do not be fooled by this message, it took me 20+ minutes to write factoring fixing typos and sounding coherent.

How dark your avb is with the capsules? Its fully cooked eventho the dose is that small (0.035)?

I ran it at max temp for a full 300 second session
Rinsed the mouthpiece under warm water. No soap or iso needed imo.

Worked great. No weird taste or smell on first bowl.

Mine occurred using 0.035g with S&B capsule… no spacer or dosing pads At 240C on-demand.

Quite dark.

Went for a walk the other day, so loaded a couple of full capsules (0.1g each) which I tried to spread out over a few on demand “sessions” each. Same 220C and the ABV is equally dark with both 0.1g and 0.035g.

I've been running the glass reducers with no problem at all. The smaller size is about a dynavap load and the bigger is maybe a basket screen load(?). The full bowl melts my brains through my eyeballs. It gets a bit hot, but it's expected with the amount of heat the heater is pumping. The heater is a BEAST. Session@375 or on demand @400-420 and it's a fog machine. That first LONG pull, dragging the heat through fresh material tastes pretty nice. The peek and long airpath don't rob as much flavor as I expected. I don't like to run hot, so I haven't pushed the upper limits. It's put everything else in the rotation on break....in the honeymoon phase.

Lube seems like it's going to be ongoing maintenance, because without it, you'll spill material when you remove the cooling unit. I just put the slightest bit on a small cotton tip and run it in the channel on the cooling unit outside the screen area. It's completely out of the airpath. I imagine this will be required at a very minimum after each iso soak.

edit: For lube, I'm using something I already have - keg lube. Search for 'sanitary petrol gel' on Besos' site. You use such a tiny amount each time, a tube will last a lifetime.

Response to my buzzing and device overheating inquiry:

the buzzing sound of the heater is normal, it's PWM temperature regulation.

The "DEVICE TOO HOT" notification appears when the Frolic is pushed too hard and the inner temperature limit is reached. It takes a couple of minutes for the device to cool down and it can be used as usual after that. Back to back usage will cause this sometimes but it's nothing to be concerned about.

Have checked tracking this morning and Royal mail are still expecting it. Is this normal? I emailed Frolic yesterday (prob too soon due to the weekend) and was told I would get it today (not sure how they would know this). I am in the UK.

PSA, take Vgoodiez advice and choose something other than USPS. I was suppose to get delivery today on the Frolic. It landed in my city in the middle of the night last night, then got re-routed to another city hours away.
It was shipped priority mail too. Vgoodiez processed immediately and was picked up hours later. I guess I’ll hope for delivery tomorrow. So far it will be 5 business days from GA to FL (connected states)

That's nothing! According to the original tracking, mine was supposed to arrive on Saturday (shipped from the Netherlands to the Netherlands). Then nothing, until yesterday it turned up in Hungary (half a continent away)... I hope to get it soon but at this point I'm keeping my expectations low
