EVOLV Cricket

Future updates will include user created custom heat profiles (adding multiple screens) so you could switch between heating profiles for different concentrates directly on the device (by using escribe to create you custom profiles to load on to the device) ((sorry if that’s too “technical” or requires you to be “tech savvy” LOL))

@80Sixed , why don’t you tell them about the nice conversation you had with Brandon?
Requiring a computer connection for a mobile vape device is a nonstarter for a huge portion of the market. Acting as if it has anything to do with being a Luddite is missing the point.

In reference to our conversation, what would you like me to add? I’m still running into issues with the device registering the cap as on or off with this new firmware. He did credit me with bringing this issue and the weld issue to their attention, and is working on correcting these. As it stands I don’t have much info to add, I thought it was probably too early in trying this new firmware to really give it a review.

I completely agree. I think this product could target two types of people: anyone who was considering the Puffco Proxy, and oil pod/cart users. Neither group really wants to connect their device to a PC to get a good experience. It's cool for the option to customize the software exists for power users though.

For the bad weld on the trench, they should just send you a new one. They really need to find an online retailer to partner with. Otherwise it will be difficult to find replacement parts.

With the glass chimney and gasket removed the tub could be loaded little more than typical with no worries of sucking hot oil into the airway.

So far I’m finding 600F with 3.5 second heat up to be suitable for full BB sized dabs.

Produces 4 hits: 2 full and 2 whispy.

Also, without the chimney & gasket installed it’s too airy and the flavor gets muted. So my solution is to cover the backside airports on the cap with my index finger.

Certainly functions like a session wax device rather than a one hit wonder machine. But the vapor is exceptionally smooth and tasty.

I’ll keep posting as I change my methods.

Cheers

Honestly, this is one of the things that concerned me about the Cricket. Having lots of experience with wax pens I thought it was kind of odd you couldn't adjust the airflow. Like you said, different load sizes or even different strains benefit from modifying the airflow a bit.

Can you figure out the largest amount you can load while using the device as intended?

Has anyone tried the Lightening Pen by Divine Tribe? It’s literally what the cricket promised, except it can heat clean itself as well. I’m getting fat clouds, can put a little MORE than a bb, and it’s like 14 mm on the mouthpiece if I wanted to add water filtration.

The Cricket can likely clean itself as well. And it has temp control. That having been said, the Lightning Pen is $60. Is the Cricket gonna be more than 6 times better than the LP? I doubt it. Plus many (most?) dabbers would prefer ceramic to Titanium.

I think Matt is expanding the Lightning line as well. Competition is a good thing. There's still a place in the market for the Cricket, but IMO the price needs to come down to 299 max.

The crickets titanium trench gathers at best a skid mark from excess heat, where as the lightening cup burns back to completely clean.

Just wanted to add in relation my previous additions to this thread-

I received a new bucket after explaining the corner gaps and how they catch cotton, and another device as way of reconciliation for unwittingly joining the beta test for $430+.

Unfortunately the new bucket is exactly the same so there’s no difference there.

As far as the updated firmware that changed the way the device recognizes the cap, I’m still frequently capping and uncapping, trying to catch the screen at the right time by pressing the button. This is far and away NOT a fix.

Now the biggest bonus for me was the lack of heat distributed in my pocket after I put it away, but having used the Lightening Pen for about a week and change now, that is no longer unique to the cricket.

And while temperature control may be very important to some, I agree that feature is far and away overvalued at 399 before tax and shipping.

Everything else being equal, yeah I'd rather have good temp control than not. But from what I've seen of the dabbing community, the gold standard isn't a temp controlled e-nail hit. It's a quartz torch dab. Either cold or hot start. Sure, you can use a thermometer. but for most dabbers...there's no temp control.

Looks like you can buy The Cricket from Evolv....if you live in a State where adult use is legal.

The Black Friday price is $333.

I want to throw the atty from that pen on a Pico. I bet it will TC, and it would still be decently pocketable.

From what I’ve read, the lightning cup is not 510 compatible FYI.

It didn't look like it from the pics I've seen, but I've heard both that it is, and it isn't. Appears to be a bit of a hit for DT so maybe we'll see more atty's with a small crucible.

Stability could be an issue, but maybe I'll grab some replacement heaters when they're available and slap them into a M22 base. That' the only way I use the DTv5 heaters these days anyway.

That portion of the market is a lot less huge than you seem to think it is and it is shrinking by the day. It's 2022 and I had a computer in 1994. And keeping in mind the price of this expensive device i dont think it would be unreasonable to assume 90+% of the people interested in it have 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 old laptops kicking around they could use to update it if need be. People use computers to do everything these days, including posting to this forum. I would say just as big of a part of the market if not bigger would see user updateable firmware as a HUGE feature, not a drawback. I agree that the firmware should be updated on new units, but when is the last time you bought a phone or roku or anything electronic these days and didn't have to update it? Hell even video games are released unfinished and updated later. I'm not saying I agree with it, but people have accepted it whether you have or not.

I dunno. The amount of people I've met in their 20's and 30's who don't own a PC is pretty staggering. Smartphones and tablets have made PC's unnecessary for a big percentage of the population.

I think being able to upgrade firmware is cool. But I feel like Evolv should've figured out the Cricket hits too hot/fast before shipping. Like, ship a 1.0 version of the software not a beta.

but people have accepted it whether you have or not.

The comparison to games is interesting. That definitely is the norm these days. But I don't know if gamers have accepted it. From what I've seen, they bitch constantly about this phenomenon.

Guess we've just met way different people haha. I don't know a single person except for my dementia ridden grandma who doesn't own a desktop or laptop PC whether they're 90 or 20.

They bitch constantly but still open their wallets wide. Otherwise the practice wouldn't exist. Sorry for the off topic post in advance mods.

I'm always the type to have a laptop available to me, so I don't really get it. A lot of them have a company provided work laptop. But in their personal lives, nope. No need to have a full fledged computer for scrolling social media, posting photos, etc.

I just polled my gen z coworkers, and the only ones that use a laptop or desktop outside of work are gamers (our two content creators are iPad only). Between smart phones, tablets, and smart tv’s, there’s not a lot of reason for many people to have a PC.

I’m confident Evolv will release retail units fully fledged with features / on board adjustable heating parameters. At this time I agree, not everyone will be okay with having to use a computer to update their out-of-the-box device. I understand the frustration not knowing that upfront. But the quality of life changes they are making are certainly welcome by me.

There is a complex relationship with product designed and end users. It’s not clear what features are needed when a subset of beta testers are saying it’s working how you told them to use it.

With that said, I couldn’t see my self going back to crucible for on the go. While you may not feel the excessive heat in your pocket, the crucible and the oil remains hot and runny. If you have to pocket it quick mid sesh you’re going to wind up with oil everywhere.

With the Cricket the oil is back to stiff and cool in 5 seconds due to the Ti.

My Puffco Peak Pro does this via Wi-Fi and a phone app...now my Puffco is nearly rooted thanks to the last update it somehow tried to do, now I have no lights, no 1st set temp timer and no Aussie support, great!
I have decided I like devices that do not need an app and are tested properly before public release so firmware updates are not needed.:2c:

Yeah it won't really work correctly without the gasket. The gasket is what directs the incoming air down into the bucket.

Yeah, they put a lot of effort into getting a smooth (laminar) flow in the vapor path and the gasket is key in achieving that.

You seem to know a lot about this device.

Do you happen to know what material this is directly under the bucket? It appears to be some sort of plastic.

you're correct Its engineered plastic, however, not sure of the type.

The Ti tub has a low thermal conductivity and it's air gapped from the plastic housing according to Evolv.
