EVOLV Cricket

After re reading this, I realize now the Ti is integral to the design of the cricket IMO.

The thermal characteristics of the raw Ti tub allow for not only instant heat up, but cool down as well. That means no worrying about hot dabs in your pocket spilling after pre loading or not finishing a load. This was an especially nice feature when I was out at a music festival and had to be on the move suddenly.

I think that may be true, but not for that reason. When you're dabbing, once you start applying heat, any oil should either end up in your lungs or on a q-tip in relatively short order. I know you can save some for later. But by that point, you've already lost a bunch of terps. Plus, this device is made for smaller dabs. Why not only load as much as you need for a single dab, then just load a fresh dab later?

I think the Ti may be integral due to the radiant heat issue. Evolv can get away with a half inch drip tip/stem because of the 1 second heatup time. Adding ceramic to the coil would mean a longer heat up time and more radiant heat. A longer stem might be required.

Although, the v5 cups only take like 9-10 seconds to get to temp. And the coil is only heating maybe half of the ceramic cup:

Coating the Cricket's Ti coil in ceramic would mean heat is applied to 100% of the ceramic, in 1 second. How long would it take the actual surface of the ceramic to the set temp? I dunno. More than 1 second but way less than 9-10 I'd guess. And then there wouldn't be any bitching about dabbing off of metal.

That having been said, not everyone dislikes Ti. There were plenty of people who liked the FTv4 Ti cups. The Ti cups for the OG Peak were relatively popular.

But why not suggest to Evolv a FC discount of 50%, and actually get the units in real concentrate users hands, and thus actual usage FEEDBACK?

We’re talking about a company whose idea of promotion for this device was hiring an OnlyFans model to make a video of themselves fiddling with it (and then declaring it “🔥”) on Instagram. I hear good things about Evolv’s engineering chops, but they seem pretty far out of their depth when it comes to marketing.

Love my DNA75C mods!

What happened to the previous “go brandon” post, whatever that meant?

I actually like the device itself, the pricing seems ambitious but it's the marketing stradegy that concerns me. The little research I've found about the people behind Evolv didn't instill confidence, Brandon Ward and wife Heather Davis, and engineer John Bellinger, kinda gives me HanuLabs vibes. Maybe at $200 it might be worth taking a chance, any more and I'll sit and watch, grab some popcorn.

I'm not willing to say that yet. I mean, yeah probably. But I'd still like to see a bunch of reviews from seasoned dabbers. The Puffco Proxy is $300. But it will eventually require a $60 atty replacement. Use it long enough and it could end up being more than $400. And that's assuming a user doesn't acquire a glass addiction in the process.

This is the only crucible wax pen I've seen that MAY be pocketable. Most are too big and retain too much heat.

Apologies to anyone I upset.

I thought it was funny. I say it to every Brandon in my life, and I truly mean nothing political by it. It's just funny.

Me too, but I don’t see that happening at $400. $200 would be a stretch for me…
The nice size probably due to NON-REPLACEABLE battery (most likely LIPO), is a major downside IMO.

Puffco seems to have sold a ton of those Proxies. It doesn't have a replaceable battery, isn't very pocketable, and is a more conspicuous device when out and about. Though Puffco are masters at marketing, something no one will accuse Evolv of.

Personally, I'd price it to match the Proxy. Then they could say the cost of ownership is significantly less. It's apparently made in the USA vs China. 1 degree temp control vs 4-5 pre-sets. 1 second heat up vs 30.

But the Proxy seems to deliver in terms of taste and cooling. Those are open questions about the Cricket that can only be answered by putting units in the hands of a bunch of reviewers.

Whatever is going on with OP is a master class in marketing. Finding a beta device unadvertised in another state before it is even announced by the vendor with no previous relationship to Evolv is amazing. Someone in marketing there is doing a fantastic job.

Maybe I'm wrong and they're actually excellent at guerilla marketing. We're up to 5 pages on an unreleased vape.

These names aren't ringing a bell. Are they in Epstein's black book or something?

Where is the sales data on that EXPENSIVE device?

Not sure what this has to do with the subject here. Guess you never owned a DNA chipset device or any firsthand dealing with the company, as I have….

I haven't, but, I would have expected a more professional rollout for a $400 product than what I has been shown so far, nothing about this "product launch" if you can even call it that, makes any sense whatsoever, at least to my eyes.

I don't have any data. Just guessing based on the explosion in aftermarket glass. Also you don't buy out glowing articles in like 100 decently popular news sites without moving some units in the process.

They're definitely not strangers to doing big numbers when selling expensive dabbing devices though.

Yeah, my concern isn't that Evolv ain't a legit company. Anyone who spent time in the e-cig world knows they are. My concern is if they know what they're doing when it comes to dabbing devices.

Well, they are about to learn the hard way.

There was a time, with earlier DNA boards, that were sold only by Evolv, that the Chinese makers were using for some of their INEXPENSIVE mods. UNTIL the DNA75C chipset. Evolv increased the price enough that the Chinese no longer bought them, and mostly very expensive high end mod makers were the ones using them. Not sure how that worked out for them, though I’ve noticed in the past two years, a lot less activity on the DNA forums.

To be clear, as a Evolv and DNA “fan”, I only wish success for them making any new products, but the MSRP of this one and lack of any online information, other then this thread, is not encouraging. Guess time will tell.

Absolutely agree, I'd like nothing more than to see this become successful, I've been looking for something similar for awhile. As someone else stated, offering a 50% discount to a dozen or so FC members, probably the cost to retailers in Ohio, as well as sending a few out to the more popular people who do video reviews, Troy etc, if it does indeed perform as we have been led to believe, might have created a "buzz" similar to what I've seen happen to firewoods, tinymights, and Tp80's in the past few years.

I raised a similar concern. I was told the battery is over spec. and Is expected to perform for years.

You could also depend on warranty and battery servicing being an option. Evolv has never denied a warranty claim, ever.

I wish you all luck trying to get a FC 50% discount..I think that would be cutting it pretty close to “at cost” for them and seems highly unlikely. They already have multiple Distributors interested and ready to buy all they could produce.

Happy dabs to all

Have they said anything about like, a marketing campaign launching? I'm trying to picture someone walking into a smoke shop and buying a product they've never heard of because the owner says "trust me bro". Especially when the Puffco shit they see plastered all over the internet is sitting there at a lower price point.

as well as sending a few out to the more popular people who do video reviews, Troy etc

I'd take Troy and Jerry's opinion on it seriously. But from what I remember, they both bought the Proxies they reviewed. Maybe they don't review free units anymore. And if that's the case, it'll be a while before there's a review if there's limited units divided among a few B&M shops.

There is no marketing team or anything like that, they’re a lean, nerdy, engineering firm out of a small town in OH. They expect the Cricket to sell based on its performance merit alone just like their DNA chips. Like I said, they’re pretty much lined up to sell all they could make already, hence why he thought the founders units at $299 would be a good idea.

it seems the general sentiment is people are willing to give it a go, just not at it’s current MSRP. Personally, the price is extremely fair for a domestics design / build.

The Mighty+ is $399 is using nearly decade old tech, 100% plastic (cheap AF).

While comparing s&b to Evolv isn’t fair based on how established each are in the cannabis industry, the pricing comparison is valid (premium mass produced vape)

I’ve been using it for a week and my biggest complaint is the temp ramp being too fast causing excess splatter. Which is a problem that could be patched out using escribe

I was told the battery is over spec.

Every rechargeable battery has an EOL (End Of Life). 18650 lithiums, approximately 300-500 charge cycles, LiPo packs vary by custom sizes, obviously the smaller sizes are reduced.

If one could replace the battery themselves, that’s a decent option, and what I did with my now old, VaporShark DNA200, the only LIPO device I own, that the battery pack can be found in hobby stores and easily replaced by the owner. Devices that do not have replaceable batteries, are cheap ones that I knew beforehand would end up in a landfill.

50% MSRP is pretty standard pricing to retailers industry-wide, it’s certainly going to be a healthy margin above cost.

Any idea why no one seems to be selling these, if they’re already in production? The whole situation remains quite weird, tbh.

Yes, I’m aware no cell will cycle forever. The only reason these aren’t user replaceable is because they are soldered directly to the chipset. They will 100% battery service these at a fair price.

The form factor of an iPhone with no case in my pocket really sells me on it TBH. Just holding it feels superior.

Production has been a little slower than they hoped, just waiting to have enough stock to fulfill contract demands from distributors. That’s

why he’s willing to sell us the first few units now. Once they’re in contract their is no direct to consumer.

Evolv is well respected among the nerdiest subset of e-cig users, to be sure (myself included). But they're not exactly a household name to your average Joe walking into a smoke shop. And even if they are, this isn't an e-cig mod. That's what they're known for, not dabbing devices. So we're back to the smoke shop having to say "trust me bro".

Maybe the distributors will do the marketing for them. Though if cost is $150, and Evolv needs to make a profit I dunno how much the retailers are making per device. Especially if this is gonna be a low volume deal.

I hope it works out for them. Gotta say though... I feel like The Sharks would have an issue with this business plan.
