Sand Castle Vapor Wand

Hey @invertedisdead is there any chance you could link to the specific quartz joint tubes you're using for your devices? I'm struggling to find something similar in the EU, maybe someone can help here.

You might try looking for a 14/23 quartz joint as I believe that size is more popular on your side of the pond. You’ll likely want the matching 14/23 adapter for a bowl, though a sufficiently deep 14/20 adapter would probably be alright.

I’m using these ones here

That would work, just be advised that it’s boro glass and not quartz. Some people have better luck than others with torching boro, technically if annealed properly it should be able to handle it, but it’s much more important that boro is heated evenly to avoid any pinpoint cracks. quartz on the other hand can handle much more torch inconsistencies and variations. For filling with beads and directly torching I still recommend using quartz if possible to find.

Thanks a lot for the very valuable info, initially the company you posted ships worldwide, would have to see the costs. I've used boro heaters before and have had structural failures or cracks and so on, so I appreciate the value of quartz for this purpose. I'll post updates as I go along wiith this since rubies/boro balls are also a feat to find in my country.

I don't know where you are @tukatukera but if you're anywhere near the UK you can get 3mm rubies or 4mm clear sapphires at

I've not found a supply of quartz joints yet unfortunately but I've not looked for a while.

You’re most welcome! If you can more easily find a quartz banger you can use that as-is, filling the joint with beads and using the banger body as the handle - or score with a razor blade and snap the neck right off the banger.

Or if you can find a quartz nectar collector tip, those are pretty common as well for other ways to make these. The very first one I made was just a simple boro glass male-to-male adapter.

That’s excellent info for anyone near the UK! Thanks for sharing that so folks can slap one of these together. Kind of surprised these quartz joints are so difficult for some folks to track down though, when I posted this DIY I always figured they would be really easy to source, but it seems to be a bit more difficult than I had originally anticipated.

Hahah, yeah... material selection is always a challenge.

It's too bad you couldnt find anyone to do the frit work. I think a lot of cannabis related glass workers are in such high demand... taking on custom orders is rare. And like you said... someone out there can do it... but it'll likely be expensive.

I like the whole concept of a stationary wooden base that heats your wand. I'm totally interested in where you'll go with whatever you decide to do!

Exactly, I think I could probably find a specialized firm to make them; I’ve found a few of them who seem capable, but I wouldn’t have the commitments ready to order say, 1000 units, especially if there wasn’t a big interest.

These guys don't ship to Spain sadly, Brexit policy.

Similar to an elev8r if you've used one of those torched, keep an eye on the colour of the flame, when it starts to turn from yellow to orange it should be about ready. Practice in a darkened room with a timer and you should get it pretty quickly.

My flowerpot controller went down, leaving me with only dynavaps. SCVW to the rescue; I built a freshy w a new quartz nectar collector. Works great, but I hate counting torch times.

glad it’s still performing for you!

Yeah, I had wanted to do one with a thermometer probe like the earlier Supreme’s for the extra visual feedback.

Yeah if you do it enough the timing becomes pretty innate, the SCVW was my daily driver for a few months while I was waiting for more desktop parts.

Of course it’s never quite the same foolproof consistency as the electric one!

Decided to whip one of the together tonight. Not a quartz joint, though, so being cautious. 14mm adapter from an EQ kit. May get some quartz joints and make a few more for friends.

That looks like a large amount of…kief maybe? Unless I’m missing what’s going on, how well did it get the stuff that was farther down from the heater?

Looks like it did its job at least, but if it managed to extract buried kief far away from the heater I’ll be even more impressed! :)

No kief, just a bit of ground bud in an Alpha + stem. Probably .2g or so.

Due to the huge amount of heat retention in the wand, extraction is about as thorough as it gets.

Thanks, it’s hard to see small details in the video and I couldn’t see the individual flower bits. Still impressive to extract that deep! :)

I'm based in the UK and have struggled to find parts for the SCVW. Eventually, I discovered these DDave Wands on eBay and rubies from RVS (listed above).

I also found the folks at https://scientificglass.co.uk/ particularly helpful (but make sure you ask for Royal Mail 24hr, else you pay the standard £20 courier fee.)

I'll try and do a compare/contrast when everything finally arrives, and I've had a play.

[Mods, please combine this with the post advice]
PS I've just spent the most terrifying 10 minutes of my vaping life: racked with fear at the prospect of 60 superheated rubies dropping out of the bottom.

I guess this is the kind of project only undertaken by the kinds of folks who already have at least 4 kinds of screens, bit I'm glad I'm one of them.

After a lot of screen based shenanigans I eventually assembled an 18mm version. Honestly, you don't want to build any smaller.

I've cleared a couple of pinches in a Chinese Elev⁸r knock-off bowl (1mm too shallow) and an OG elev8r bowl (perfect) and it works great.

But the threat of balls hang over me like an impending sense of climate catastrophe. It's not a relaxed vape experience.

Any screen fitting tips?

I finally made a Sand Castle.
This is a 14mm quartz straw for nectar collector, filled with (30x ?) 2,5mm (maybe 3mm) quartz balls. I used Herborizer Ti Screens.

1 : Shaping the bottom screen. I shaped it on a right sized nail head, using little pliers to make the folds on the sides of the basket neat and rigid.
The nail head is approximately the diameter of the bottom opening of the 14mm joint.
2 : Filling the balls from the straw side. You have to maintain the screen at the beginning but then, pressing the balls down (with a thin wooden stick) will make the sides of the screen expand and lock into place.
3 : Shaping the top screen. I shaped it like a vaponic screen. (Again, little tweezers for nice folds.) And push down the screen to compress the balls down and maintain the pressure that helps locking the bottom screen in.

The bowl is a Ehle 18-14 reducer with a Herborizer screen wedged inside. The adapter is extra long and that allows to adjust the screen position.
Here it is pictured with a small load set at the minimal distance ime. (Even a little too close since I had some tunneling on this roast.)

And this is how it looks on the Sherlock :

First thoughts :
- I'm really confident on the safety of this assembly. Since the bottom screen is too wide to pass the opening of the 14mm joint, the only way to dismantle it is to remove the top screen from above with a thin wooden stick.
- Heating is really fast : less than 15 sec with the blazer big buddy. (~10 sec cool down required to heat soak the balls without combusting the load.) I only heat the wide part. Not the radiator part, although it should help to go low temp.
- You can heat it with a PB-207 sized torch although its longer… (around 40 sec) I even managed to combust the first time. So a quick cool down before hitting is required as well.
- It really is a one hitter. The load is small and you get all of it in one draw. The sides are a little less roasted than the middle. The further the load from the heater the less tunneling you'll have (but need higher temperature).
- The tip of the straw is never hot enough to burn yourself so handling is really straightforward. No need for tweezers.

I havent timed anything so my timings are guesstimations…

Edit : its not replacing the EMK. I find the EMK to be more consistent. But I have to play more with this sand castle.
