Sand Castle Vapor Wand

@invertedisdead, did you ever play with the size of the beads u use…I’m curious if putting in fewer but larger quartz/Ruby beads (like 6mm) will change the performance…just got couple stems from king of quartz (thanks for the recommendation)

Yeah I experimented around, but I found 3mm works good with these as you want the higher m surface area to transfer heat from the quartz joint onto the beads!

Fired up the 14mm Sandcastle Jr this morning, I think it’s one of the most efficient vapes out there! Thick milkshakes on straight crumbs, also works great with kief! 🙃

Now off to find donut holes 😂
Have you applied an enail to this concept yet? Like maybe if There were rubies/glass up the neck to transfer heat down to the joint. What is the OD of the joint stem? Would 12--16mm barrel coil fit?

A 16mm barrel coil fits a 19/22 male

I did try a few electric ideas, but you can’t really heat it above the joint as neither material is thermally conductive enough to transfer heat down to the joint if heated above it.

I have a different desktop enail concept in my signature that is similar to this (same materials) but specifically optimized for an enail coil.

Though I did consider putting a SSV/ soldering element into a 14mm quartz joint... and then turn that into a log 🧐 I think that could be pretty nice! I think @Hippie has already made a few like that.

Had the 14mm Vapor Wand on the drawing board, thinking about converting it to an induction capable design; I always wanted an electric heated option.

I really like the potential of this platform - as a convection microdoser it near instantly whitewalls a tube with the very best of them on just crumbs. And Induction heating would bring forth another level of freedom when using it. I’m not sure the perfect IH exists for it currently, but maybe if I build it, they will come? I find the form factor very fun to use and effects wise it punches wayyyyyyyyy above its weight class. If you’re into little one hitter snaps it’s very sweet, extraction is so quick and the loads are so small you don’t tend to feel much extra heat.

So which part do you heat? None of the videos show the actual heating bit! Apologies for being a bit dim, but can't work out if you heat through the joint or down the end. I'm guessing people are using a big blowtorch for this rather than single/dual/triple flame

You heat the area with the balls,a.k.a the glass joint.

I had considered making a metal one that would work with a smaller lighter, but never got around to it. Anybody could make one using a nectar collector tip from The ‘Gate though. They even have 10mm wands if one wanted to try that, though the 14mm Sandcastle Junior is already a fantastic microdoser that will run on crumbs.

I use my Blazer Big Shot now, but a medium sized torch works fine, especially with the 14mm version. The Dynavap sized torches are a bit small however.

Made one (14mm quartz nectar collector). Like it. Takes practice to get the elusive perfect hit but when you do.... Zot! Straight to the forehead...
Plenty of temperature but not much actual stored heat is the reason for success imo.

Yeah when you get it Goldilocks “Just Right” it’s a real slammer! One time I tried 2mm beads and it instantly combusted from more stored heat capacity, might be worth another try in the smaller 14mm version. I do agree that with 3mm beads the window isn’t super long. It seems longer on consecutive bowls where there is already a good amount stored energy inside the beads. Also like a Dynavap the torch matters a bit too, smaller torches like my Ion Lite take longer but allow a longer soak than my Big Shot. If you use really high conductivity beads like SiC it stores even less heat, but you can inversely work off the fast heat transfer which is kind of interesting. Kind of like the opposite of the Anvil.

I considered some ways of adding more consistency but never explored it too much. One idea was to build in a thermocouple probe like the early Supremes in the wood housing used.

Another idea was to have custom cadmium beads made for their thermochromic function which was inspired by the Whitney Harmon color changing bangers.

That’s awesome you made one from a nectar collector tip, thanks for sharing!

@invertedisdead I've been thinking of putting together a 14mm version of this for awhile. earlier in this thread you mentioned you had a harder time finding a good bowl for the 14 mm version do you have any recommendations for what I should look for in looking for a bowl, also what size screen is best in your opinion?

Thanks for the great diy design!

With the 14mm adapters the trick is to find one with enough space underneath the 14mm female joint, so when the hot air hits the plant and makes it expand, it won’t touch the heater (which could char)

Sorry for the dirty glass picture but you can see the adapter on the left allows the screen to sit just a little bit lower from where the heater locks in. Not much, but it makes a difference, and allows you to load a little more. A little more screen depth would probably be even better, ideally the quartz joint on the heater would be cut down about 1/4” to add a little additional clearance which should make it work with most any 14mm bowl/adapter.

These are screens from a Sticky Brick, and If I recall correctly they are 1/2” ~12MM.

Cheers!

@invertedisdead one last question, have you tried 4mm beads? I can only find 3mm beads on vgoodiez but 4mm ones seem to be a little more common.

Yeah I’ve tested 4MM sapphires and still use them in my InVerzion 1.5 desktop for better airflow, but I’d suggest 3MM beads for the 14MM SCVW build for the increased surface area/contact as it’s a “stored heat vape”

Cheers!
