Old Head Freight Train

Huh. I just noticed this on the Sneaky Pete store. I sold some stuff to free up some dough to get a Minivap or Tinymight, but I'm kinda curious about this. People seem to go crazy over these injector-style vapes, and I use at home almost exclusively. I wonder if this isn't a better purchase? This seems like it could be a "final step" style of purchase, where you don't need anything else, and with a mighy+, I'd love the idea of having a complete set up without any more purchases in the future.

Edit - looking at Canadian stores so that's a big draw for me. Sneakypete has a Canadian location.

Thoughts?

A ball injector vape is everything it's cracked up to be and this one has a great setup/price. I have a Hot Rod which is the previous offering from Old Head and it's lower-powered compared to the Freight Train but solidly built. I also have a B-Zero which compares with this price-wise and I assume in terms of power: even a lower-priced ball vape setup such as these are amazingly powerful and probably surpass the two you mentioned in terms of future-proofing, build robustness, and power. The other two would be more portable, obviously, though the Minivap is not very mini at all and is really quite powerful as well.

Edit: the only notable qualification I've seen with the Freight Train is that the hit is more constricted than the Cannabis Hardware heads. My understanding is that the FT's resistance was tuned to feel like a combustion bong toke.

Edit 2: If you are shopping for lower-priced ball injectors I would add one caveat: in my experience the e-elev8r is probably the lowest-performing ball vape because of its constriction, limited size and capacity for mass, and because it's a challenge to get enough of the coil to contact enough of the heater (not super-challenging, however). That said, I have one I use all the time for closer-heated flavor bowls and it's a delight for that purpose. Just wanted to point out that while the e- or dc-elev8r will fully roast a bowl with excellent flavor, it is surpassed by the others you'll see in terms of sheer power.

I probably wouldn't mess with those because I want to stick with a Canadian retailer, and I haven't seen those listed in Canada.

I absolutely hate the decision-making process that goes into all of this. I labour over these decisions like you wouldn't believe, and vapes have so much "good for some, not for others" qualities that it's hard to nail down a choice lmao.

I think that if you are interested in an injector vape, current variables are generally power, build quality (and maybe material choice), draw restriction, and primarily, price. Otherwise they more or less do the same thing: heat enough mass to thoroughly roast a load without loss of heat capacity during draw, and reduce refractory (reheating) time for back-to-back hits. I would suggest reading through this and other forums where the FT is discussed to see if any flags are raised for you (I haven't seen anything negative at all except the draw-restriction, but that's only one if you absolutely demand a wide-open hit). From what I can see this is as good a build/price as you'll find, with only the B-Zero and the Ceroma competing among pre-built kits.

That makes sense. I like how it's kind of a thoughtless kit to pick up from sneaky pete's. The only other desktop I could consider is the Taroma because it has a Canadian retailer as well. It's a few more bucks though and I have no clue how it stacks up.

I'm still very happy with my freight train. It really does replicate a bong hit, but with vapor instead of smoke. The effects are super strong and the flavor is great. If you have a 14mm female water piece to use you're ready to go out of the box. Now like I said in my review this is my first injector/ball vape, so maybe they're all this awesome, but I certainly love my freight train. If money was no object I would have probably gone with a Flowerpot B1 Essentials kit just because I would like having the titanium bowl to eliminate the possibility of breakage, but for 50% more it just wasn't worth it to me. I am very happy with my purchase and if I lost it I would immediately order another.

I'd read through that thread. It's possible those would have more capacity to deliver a lot of hot air, I'm sure the XL would. The Freight Train is sort of in a sweet spot for price v power.

For at home use only the freight train would be a much better choice than a minivap, assuming you have a safe place to keep it on all the time. After using the freight train for a few weeks I would choose a 30ft extension cord and my FT any day over my minivap if I wanted to vape in the backyard.

I am a fan of the minivap, very versatile if its your only vape, but once I got a few desktops I had no desire to get it out anymore. My only criticism of the FT would be the stand, it works fine, but I would have liked to see some train branding carried over from the box. Maybe just a little train cutout above the oldhead logo on the stand, it would make it seem a little less like a collection of parts offered as a kit. The FT is currently my most used vape and I don't see that changing soon, I doubt you would be disappointed with the purchase.

Has anyone received their fusion engine? Is the airflow any different than the flower engine or is it the exact same?

This is a resounding endorsement. I might have to do the ball vape thing, if nothing else. I think the only thing holding me back is the idea of having that exposed coil. Is the risk any lower with one that doesn't have an exposed coil, like the Taroma?

Probably only perceptually speaking. It's 'feels' safer, but if it's actually any cooler at all it's only a matter of degrees: the coil sits just behind a conductive material. Best suggestion would be to use it in a way that feels safe to you: on a metal table or tray, covered with a silicone sheet, with a very secure stand (clay flowerpot with 14mm glass stand inside held in place by pea gravel?). Once you get used to it, you'll feel more comfortable, but of course there are ways to feel and BE safer. But part of the reason I choose a Hot Rod was for this perception of safety; and part of choosing a B-Zero was realizing it's in the handling that most safety issues lie.

Yeah I'd be sure to have that set up appropriately - I just have cats and they are drawn to "do not touch" shit like moths to a flame. Looks like it's a consideration either way.

Thanks! Sorry for a million questions.

A very good desctription. For the heavy hitters among us, the other factor I'd mention is heating/reheating time. From looking at the Freight Train (and only looking!) there is a lot of metal on the injector part that is pretty far from the coil. So longer to heat that up, and slower to return to temp after hit than stubbier designs. Only a guess from photos, but I'd also guess that Freight Train is on the more restrictive side of the ball vape spectrum, but that can also be adjusted by playing with ball size (the larger balls, the greater airflow).

I watched a video recently by a user (here, I believe) who cut the nozzle down because he felt the distance was too great and the metal was leaching heat. His caveat, however, was that the FT injector works fantastically with its own adapter/bowl. Not sure how others feel, but he seemed satisfied that his interventions were necessary to have it perform well on a variety of bowls. I raise this because there was early speculation about the length of the nozzle, and this user's experience seems to bear that out.

what would be a good glass piece for the FT?,i just purchased the mega globe 2 but i dont think its going to work out due to the closeness of the mouthpiece to the bowl

Troy from 420 kinda said he went back to the Freight Train and is fine with the long nozzle. He said it's a flavour thing and prefers it that way. I've been researching these things pretty heavily and the more I think of it, the crazier it seems to cut this thing down. I'd imagine that it's fine out of the box.

Sneaky Pete sells an extended cooling mouthpiece (Mega Globe XL Cooling Mouthpiece) for the globe that has dimples and moves your face farther away. I can use my globe with it and the FT and it's OK, certainly an improvement over the regular mouthpiece. That's probably your cheapest option since you already have a globe. Or if your setup/situation allows, maybe use the tube mouthpiece that comes with the globe? If you want to buy a separate piece something tall works best I think. I'm using mine with a 18inch tall piece and it's nice and far away. With my other, smaller piece it was a little close.

i cant seem to find anywhere with the extended mouthpiece,i dont mind getting a new bong if its going to make the experience better .
