Any recs for best videos on how to use Underdog? YouTube link on their page not working for me...

And I don't know what I am not getting here.

Should I be capping the stem after loading with the other included baskets? If not it seems like it needs to be only hit horizontally or inverted. Otherwise I'm cleaning herb out of the Dog itself not just the stem.

And how deep are people packing it? Just the bowl area on the Gong? When I did more my roast was mostly just at the surface near the heater.

Really bummed at the lack of easy to find documentation. There's one dude with 2 short videos from his first day with it. And that's all I could find on YouTube.

Don't relish scrolling back these 700 pages in hopes of finding something. And should have paid closer attention to the return policy.

Hopefully my experience improves but sucks to not have good out of the box guidance.

Our YT page seems to have disappeared altogether.. lame.. thanks for the heads up we'll look into it.

If you use the voltage and heat up time recommendations from your instruction and/or quickstart sheet and keep the
screens in their default installed position then you'll want to load a stem with about twice the thickness/volume of the basket
screen worth of material and pack lightly/softly. Connect the stem and Dog then inhale at a steady rate and you'll get results.

No need to worry about material falling out of the stem and into the vape, it won't be an issue if you don't blow the material out
as the stickiness holds it firmly in place. The line on the instructions about that is outdated and will be removed.

Any tips for breaking in the Underdog? Mine still has a surprisingly strong walnut taste despite using it almost daily for about a week.

Just leave it on at your normal vaping power 24/7 and the natural oils in the wooden body will dry out and should stop having
any significant taste or smell. That should usually happen within a few days to a week or two but depends on the species, the heat level, elapsed hours (if not 24/7) and the users sensitivity of course. :2c:

Sounds good. That was my plan but I suppose I will also include the important step, "be patient". Thanks!

Assuming you are just smelling the wood and not actually tasting it while vaping, right? I’ve never gotten any wood taste from any of my Dogs.
I can smell it very slightly when I lean in over the dog (closer than the stem would allow). But I get a very strong flavor from the log on the second and third hit. The first hit is a big flavorful cloud, which doesn't have much walnut. The rest are just walnut (wood) taste.

The first day my UD had a strong smell, but that was mostly gone after the first 12 hours. Also I was running it much hotter at the beginning.

Yeah I warm up for 30mins at 11v, then dial it back to anywhere between 6-8v for the vaping, nothing but tasty terps so far. I’ll have to do a full 4 Dog lineup soon with taste test and see if I’m getting any hint of wood taste.

Yeah. This is what I do but I usually soak for at least an hour. Haven't gone below 7 but I might just have to follow you to 6V.

I have a "Special" SC3 so I don't know if my cheapness is a factor here. Or maybe it's just an oily piece of wood. I figure it just has to break in a bit more. Luckily it's heating now.

I've had a couple of walnut dogs that took a bit longer for the smell of the wood to dissipate. One of them was so strong at first that I thought I wouldn't be able to use it. I left it on (as Dave suggests) and a week or two later it was fine. That dog quickly became my favorite, and was my daily driver for 5 years until an SC3+ upstart reorganized the pack hierarchy.

Give it some time at temperature until it dries out a bit and the smell goes away, then condition the outside of the body with beeswax and mineral oil (UD mixture works great) -- after that you should be good to go.

Does anybody have the measurements for the inner and outer diameter of the alpha core? I really wanna put together a paper stem (big shoutout to @Alan for the idea) for my alpha+. The paper stems clog way less than glass or metal stems and have become my prefered DD stem.
Just following up on this to say that @Alan made some paper stems for the alpha for me (which also fit the couchlog, btw), and they are really phenomenal! I also found that the 14mm glass-in-wood stem he made me fits perfectly into the mouthpiece, giving all the cooling benefits of glass and all the roasting benefits of paper. I highly recommend trying these out if you enjoy using a direct draw from the Alpha, it stays cleaner than glass and gives a more robust vapor from not absorbing the heat at the site of roasting. The paper and cork stems are super reasonably priced ($6 a piece), so its not a big risk to try them out either. Happy Roasting!

What’s Alan’s turnaround time like on these paper stems? Sounds intriguing.

Hey everyone. I have been lurking for over a year now going through several FC threads for research on my existing devices and I happened to have acquired a few new devices that were just what I needed as upgrades for long term use, and I now own three Underdogs, two SC3 core and a SC3+ core.
This my first post on FC and before going further I would like to extend my gratitude and respect to Dave, the creator of these wonderful Dogs and to the members of this community, many of whom are almost in all the threads I regularly visit, and the wealth of knowledge they share here has been and is very valuable to me. So thank you and that is an understatement.
I got interested in the Underdog by pure chance in fact. I was researching to get TCR working on my Splinters when I came across the iHeat, then the Heat Island and that led me to the Underdog in the process! Also in another thread a member ( Abysmal Vapor, I think) mentioned the UD in his trinity of vapes and that the UD “is made by one of the coolest guy on FC” and that was an important factor that made me jump and order my first dog! I can’t say I am disappointed.
I received my first dog on March 18th, a Black Oak special which I have been enjoying daily since then and until two days ago when I received my Black Walnut SC3+ from the recent refresh. The Black Oak was actually the result of a processing mismatch since I ordered a Figured Black Walnut special and Dave was very kind and generous to send me the one I ordered along with a bonus vvps, and let me keep the Black Oak “as a spare” which ended up being used daily; i think it will now become a second spare because I have not used the walnut SC3 special so much I love the just arrived SC3+.

I cannot fail to repeat what has been often repeated here, UD customer service and how Dave is a stand out guy. I echo that, not just for the bonus swags I am starting to collect and stock out but for his attention and warmth, and kindness. So thank you Dave for the pleasant introduction to log vapes and the continued pleasant experience and benefits of using them.

I was already a microdoser but the UD has enhanced the advantage for me. Having gone through the whole FC thread (yes I did) and taking notes - very good move I found, I got the hang of the Black Oak UD very quickly but I am still exploring the versatility. While the SS tube is always within reach (i have 3) I don’t have any preference, although I like the 18 mm NonG a lot, whether with the screen set for a load to the brim or pushed further away from the heater for larger load. I like all the stems and have learned to use them the way I want. In the beginning I was not going higher than 9.5v but as I gained confidence I can now go up to 11.7 with the Black Oak. I’ve had some hot spot in the first few days of use but have not combusted yet. It’s been only a few days of use, I find that the SC3+ heats up faster and past 11v the wood feels hot in my hands, not comfortable. So I changed strategy and will now start at 8-9v after fulll soak for an hour at 10.5-11v and go up 11v as I need or want to, looking to find what works better for one or two hit bowl or for a more spread out roasting of the bowl with a few hits from it. 11v seems to be working perfect for me and I get cool tasty hits, and I really like how cool the vapour is and seems to help expand my not so strong lungs. I am more of a direct draw/dry cooling guy and I like to use with j-hooks or on a dry glass or water piece, but I also do enjoy with water and the SC3+ seems to be perfect for such use type, especially with a J-hook.
I really enjoy the UD experience and love my three Dogs, my first log vapes. I like holding them and they fit well in my hands. Being a wood lover, I am really happy of the Walnut choice but got used to the Black Oak. They are practical and easy to use, so definitely in for daily use.
I will figure out how to post pics and share my three dogs later if I cannot post pics now.

Thank you again everyone here who give some of their time and knowledge for the FC community members’ benefit.
