To be honest I didn't read the article, my response was to looking at the pictures. There is just no legitimate reason to have the packaging look similar. Absolutely unnecessary risk whether it is to stupid parents or ignorant children. What kid isn't gonna open a bag of snacks if they have access to them. They don't have to be in a bowl on the coffee table...

I still haven’t seen anything resembling a cogent response as to the reason for doing this. I don’t see how putting the actual Doritos logo on your bag of chips is a form of marketing, unless you’re an utter idiot. And as others have said, the risk of it getting into the hands of a kid for whom the THC logo on the front is meaningless is unnecessary and reckless. My guess is that this isn’t on Frito-Lay’s radar, else they’d put a stop to it right quick, and justifiably so, in my opinion.

And you aren't going to. I don't think one is possible. This is just dumb in so many ways.

Maybe they just want to sell edibles that taste like Doritos or Sour Patch Kids and are taking the path of least resistance by having the packaging say so in an easily discernible way. This way these things sell themselves. Stereotypical as it may sound....if you're selling edibles to the recreational crowd ... Doritos would probably work well.

If they're going to package it that way I would expect that they are going after the "impulse buy". Maybe they place these products near the dispensary register like grocery stores do with candy and such. They probably know they'll get found out and the product will get pulled but its quick money and the current stance may be "Only an adult can buy them and the adult needs to take responsibility".

I don't agree with doing the above but I can see some quick, easy money being made.

I'm sure you can make quick easy money renting out your 17 year old daughter to bachelor parties too. I mean money is money, right?

(Of course I don't mean you, I'm just sayin...)

Meanwhile Big alcohol is making hard root beer, twisted teas, lemonaid and packaging them with colorful labels so they actually look like a kid's drink. Yet no one notices that. I bet a lot more kids are popping a boozy root beer than an edible on any given day.

Oh shit, remember how it's going to be a pain in the ass to buy vaporizers for the foreseeable future? One of the biggest reasons given was kids getting hooked on fruit or candy flavored e-cigs. I just saw fucking Birthday Cake flavored vodka at the store.

We’re not talking least resistance, we’re talking no resistance. Plenty of people selling edibles make chips and sour gummies and don’t have such contempt for their customers that they need to call it Doritos in order for the customer to get that it’s a weed chip.

Agreed. I think it is straight up nasty and without morals to package something like this. Again...much like a grocery store and the candy my Grandson notices at the register ... I can see someone purchasing an 1/8th, and then lays eyes on that fake but similar Dorito bag and says "Hey, let me get one of those". If you were to print Doritos on the standard white and black edible packaging I just bought it would not catch anyone's eye in the same way.

I don't know how the manufacturer or retailor live with themselves but the impulse buy marketing approach has worked for grocery stores forever.

EDIT: This approach has also been working for head shops for decades. Can't remember the name of the head shop product(s) but I do remember it was killing kids, looked like candy and was legal. Who knows...maybe some of these manufacturers started at head shops?

It’s not similar, it’s a direct copy. I really don’t agree that the only reason someone would “impulse buy” this is if it looked exactly like a bag of non-THC Doritos. I’d be more apt to ask why they were selling bags of Doritos in a dispensary. I’d figure it out faster if it DIDN’T look like a bag of regular chips.

Didn't say it was the only reason someone would impulse buy something...just saying that it could be part of the marketing ploy, along with strategic placement and it could work the same as it does at the register in a grocery store.

Fixed that for ya!

No point in applying logic to the situation. Just follow the money.

Oh for sure. And adults used fruit flavored e-juice to quit smoking, including myself.

E-juice makers created a better product than tobacco companies were able to deliver. All that nicotine goodness without the burnt ass flavor of cancer sticks. That's why they had to run to their pets in Congress. After all, what's the point of owning politicians if you can't get your competitors shut down?

I may have skimmed over it... but I can't remember the last time I saw an authentic dispensary selling legal THC product with knockoff labels. Granted, I can only hit dispensaries when I travel currently, I seriously can't remember the last time I ran into the issue.

I CAN say I see all kinds of those knock off bags around me locally, empty ones blowing down the street, I'm picking them up out of my yard all of the time and I dont even buy them - so I know they're not mine.

These knock off packages, in my experience are nearly always blackmarket edibles that some dudes throw into a package because it ends up selling better. People who don't know shit about shit think that their local "plugs" are selling 400 mg nerds rope for 20 bucks. Guess what... everyblack market edible guy has nerds ropes, and they're all the same packaging. It's a complete gamble if they're even remotely produced by the same people let alone any consistency between packages.

All you gotta do is get some shitty distillate-covered edibles, a couple of guys to fill packs, and order a bunch of these online and there you go.

Or the kids who are paying a premium for the same boring weed as the shit in the ziplock, but somebody took the time to put it in a knockoff Cookies bag

One of the biggest and easiest identifiers of a blackmarket edible bag - the packages themselves are pre printed with THC content. I can't recall ever seeing it on a legitimate legal product, it would cost the manufacturer way too much to re-label with every batch test results. Much cheaper to just print stickers and slap them on

Anyways, all of that to say no need to blame the weed companies, its all the blackmarket stuff that is so easily confused these days

Bloomberg News: Mitch McConnell’s Inadvertent Loophole Is Helping America Get High

Months after U.S. states scrambled to close a loophole that allowed psychoactive cannabis to be sold in gas stations across the U.S., even where marijuana is illegal, a second loophole is being exploited.

“Mitch McConnell accidentally legalized weed gummies,” Higdon told me in a phone interview. “It’s not as much a loophole as it is a math issue.”

The framing in that headline is hilarious. Why is Americans "getting high" a bad thing? I also never see a "Truly's new Pumpkin Spice Seltzer is Helping America Get High" headline. It's like when binge drinkers tell me they never "do drugs".
