Orion Induction Heater

I asked but hadn't gotten a reply with regard to battery updates. I'm assuming it is no big deal to replace the battery if we can find a way into the device.

It's 5 ounces and still 35mm thick at the deepest. It won't be in my back pocket and likely not in the front. But backpack, fanny pack, belt clip, sure.

Funny you should say that. In the last Dynavap TeaTime discussion with Dynatec, Chris from Dynatec discovered early on that the reduced capacitance was a positive move over the standard ZVS modules. It was his Apollo that had me trying the HalfPint circuit. So far, it is still proving its metal.

While I’m undecided so far, and perfectly satisfied with my FD Deluxe and it’s 3000mAh battery capacity, if I get one of these, I’ll open it up. Regardless of security labels, or security screws, having a 50 tip security kit helps. I’m not concerned about resale value, as I am about safety, and the folks I’ve sold or given electronics to, have appreciated the efforts. Hopefully, the case is easily opened, for future LIPO pack replacements. If we find the case is glued shut, and no easy way for the user/owner to replace an old or faulty battery, I’d immediately pass on it, but I’m hoping that’s not the case. I’ve never owned a DV Apollo, so I don’t know how those came.

I'm not sure it is sexy enough to spunk up that much, if it had the Edge's rubberised grip and a SS plate over the heater and a little more weight I would be poorer.
*edit*
Damnit, nice review below.
I don't think I need one but now Vapefiend have them I wish my computer had a breathalyzer built in.

Of course I will @TheThriftDrifter . It could well be sitting next to the A'20 in short order but I'll give it a shot.
@RustyOldNail - that will be the first thing to look for. The Apollo has 4 security hex or torx. Okay, the second. First I'm going to charge it and see how it does throughout the battery cycle. Will it last a full day. I know 1000mah should so will it? That is the most critical critique I can come up with. But indeed, I did not get an immediate reply as to battery upgrades. It is important. I have one $500 computer with no battery service plan. reminds me a lot of the A'20 - requires heat and risks serious breakage.

I now have two baseline models each powered with the 1200mah eFests cells. Each day I can see what my previous day's usage was. I'll need to figure out how to do that with the USB-C adapter. Glad to learn from the Sunday Tea time with Dynatec Chris that HalfPint has merit in removing half the capacitance. It wa fun to see all the history remaining in the shop. Those who haven't shown up at Tea time should. Sunday eve at 6:30 PT on Instagram's Dynavap channel. You never know what gets revealed... or teased. I think there is a DV Live tomorrow too.

BTW, I am taking donations for the internal reveal! When we hit $187, I'll bust it open for you.

It was pretty late when I hit go... I also had a good reason - I destroyed my '19 cap :disgust: ...so it needed replacing. And I finally found the DynaMags with help.

I doubt they will offer warranty on the battery, it was asked like 10+ times in the teatime stream on Sunday, and kinda dodged, I also asked if the unit could be used upside down, no answer either.

IMO for 2 bills, it needs to be made out of metal since their competitor flux/flix does it already, and it has to have the ability with external activation switch to pulse the IH, as of now it doesnt look like anyway possible to use that IH natively on a wpa and pulse it to clear a cap in 1 hit.

Do you think this is a device that you can really carry in your pants pocket?
Yes its about the size of old cell phones, old ppl like me wont really care but you may be screaming cuz its so thick, remember our phones were flip phones with full on keypads before massive flat screens

I can carry it easily in my pants pocket. I can also slip it into my front shirt pocket and I can't do that with a Fluxer. Although similar in size to the Fluxer, it is indeed smaller. That size difference, dramatically lower weight, and rounded edges make this a much better pocketable option.

Heating profile is on point with this IH as well. Very even roast and handles both SS and Ti tips effectively.

Comparison pics against some IHs:

Yup, it can be used inverted.

Excellent info, picture and video! Well done.
Comparing weight is is of course valid for anything claiming to be portable, but the FD’s 3-18650 batteries, will always lose to a LIPO pack. You just have to decide how important overall battery life is to you, as well as if you can quickly pop in fresh cell/cells. While one of the main attractions I had to the FD was that I already own a lot of 18650’s, but now that I’m familiar with my DV uses, I personally would have no issue with the smaller runtime on the Orion, as long as down the road, I could buy and install a replacement LIPO for it.
Lithium batteries 300-500 charge cycles.

100% agree. Weight vs. overall battery life is a trade off and which one wins will depend on each user. Also, I don't want anyone to mistake my praise for the Orion as an indictment of the Fluxer as I don't have plans on selling. I think there are clear advantages of the Fluxer as it relates to replaceable 18650 but I just feel that focusing on just that one aspect will be selling the Orion far short of what it is. It's a very portable and well-tuned IH that will last ~60 clicks. For me that's good enough for one day but you could always augment with a battery pack...it does feature pass through charging but the unit just needs a min amount of power before it can operate.

Weight comparison:

PSM: 352g
Fluxer (with 3 18650): 372g
Orion: 144g

One of the more surprising aspects of the Orion once you have it in hand is how light it is. I find myself on couch with Orion on lap and forget that it's there.

All true.
One thing I forgot to add in the positive for the FD, is how easy it is to get into, magnet top, no tools, but the reason I mention this, as it allows you the ability to tune the coil position to your heat requirements, if you are mildly handy. I assume the Orion is non adjustable in this regard?

I've adjusted the coil as well on Fluxer (and Flix) and I agree that it's a very useful feature. This said, IMO the Orion is tuned just about perfectly and I don't believe there's a need to adjust the coil at all. I'm hoping other owners will chime in as the feedback has been extremely positive thus far.

Fat Freddy

FUCK CANCER TOO !
Does it help that I broke down in a moment of weakness and decided we only live once @Fat Freddy ?

These things are overpriced no matter what but that is the nature of Vape. 1 year warranty and a decent battery life. There is little they can screw up on this one. Said to be much more aggressive than the Apollo and Apollo 2 w/ 3-5 second heat-up times (I read that as not deep enough). The new tech of automatic power-on is the gimmick.

You are right, we only ride this carousel once and having fought an incurable cancer nearly 11 years now I've used that rationale more than a few times in order to justify "medicinal purchases"!

However, I'm thinking I may wait until Black Friday or XMAS to revisit the Orion purchase question. Nevertheless, you've made some good arguments to justify acquiring this IH! Looking forward to reading your review!

Excellent comparison, those images are just what I needed, thank you very much

I think it is much clearer, honestly those 50 clicks seem very few to me, I use cbd mostly and do many sessions and very long, but that little plus of portability drives me crazy. On the other hand the 300 clicks of the FD....

I think the importance here is the golden question, will the user be able to change the Orion battery at the end of its useful life? If I can, I'm inside for sure, if don't I'll keep waiting for my FD. I don't want to end up buying both:doh:

@mr_cfromcali said a few weeks ago that he was working on something new probably smaller; a FD2? Who knows, maybe that device can make things easier when making a decision, although he has not given any data and it has been a long time. Now would be a good moment to do it before we all put our money into the Orion:brow::brow:

Although if a lot of people put their money in the Orion maybe the FD waiting list will be shorter:hmm:

There is a lot of indecision inside me but I think that if today Vapefiend puts the Orion on the web and there is enough stock, it will definitely cost me a lot to contain my finger

PS: If this happens I wouldn't mind opening it and taking a look at the battery for the good of science:D
