Musicians. What instruments do you play?

I'm with you @EmDeemo been having alot of fun with my new toy as well. My wrist feels so much better. The strings hurt less. It Sounds great. Different from my Yamaha. The case is amazing. The case is hard/soft travel case. Love it! I purposely bought the 2020 GS MINI-E koa plus, because I would've been pissed with the old style case. Taylor guitars. It screams quality. Took me an hour or 2 before I could enjoy the sound. It projects different. Plays different. But I love it. Best purchase.

Saw Merzbow live about ten years ago! It was fantastic! Him and some guy collaborating. Thanks for the video, whoever chose some of those edits tho, good lord :)

Are you aware of Matthew Herbert? Did one album that is all from the sounds of a pig, with a pig being cooked at gigs and the meat being given out to the audience? Something along those lines, my memory is hazy.

I used to love slapping some bass back when I had that thing... what was it? Free time?

Bass. That reminds me... Incoming new toy!

1st rock concert I ever saw and this guy was wearing his bass. Looked like he was playing with himself as he slapped and picked at it. ;)

Woah it really makes me feel great to hear there are people involved in music in any way :)). I played Guitar for 5 years in a child ochestra, but i managed to break all my 10 fingers and was experiencing dexterity issues for more than decade after,so i never go back to it,but i am enchanted by the art to this very day... I am very well educated in guitar classics and i have huge respect to all the OG guitar players from all genres :).. My favorites are psychedelic rock and stoner doom, the best riffs are there IMO,but there are also gems elsewhere.. I really dig the energy on this grandpa :))
At one point of my youth i was very much into what very few people will describe as music - goregrind and death metal, even fronted on a local band doing pig squeels ,pogos and stage divings ,lol.. That is some crazy crowd that comes to this events, they are just too much for me nowadays,if i do i watch only from the sidelines :D
I always beeing a kink for the weird . I use to purchase a lot of undergound music which gets printed in just a few copies .. It was a think for some death grind bands to release their albums into 666 copies ..
I also have a collection of S.P.White albums who is an ambient noise artist, there is one track where he had a mic stuck into an anthill ,while at the same time he was playing slow, dark melody on a piano. The feeling was amazing... I was getting pleasure knowing that i am one of the very few that will ever listen to this.. (internet wasnt still that popular),even if people had access to it like they do now, very few of them would appreciate this art. I also have great appreciation even to this day for Stejin van Cauter- drone doom pioneer ,he is the real life darth vader, he so many projects and while being a big name and pioneer in the scene, his art will remain obscured and unappreciated by the masses till the end of time :))..
It is crazy how i came to also appreciate the more "mainstream" stuff like funk,jazz(<3 Alice Coltrane) ,hip-hop,drum n bass and some other electronic genres at a later phase ,since i was such a die hard fan of the underground..maybe when the people moved away from them, they became of interest,lol.. I've always felt distant and isolated from the regular people ,maybe there is freudian logic behind it,and thats why i look to "join" forces with the handful i considere alike..
:)).. I feel like a true musical chimera,It is weird having such a broad taste for music and i feel that i still dont like 99% of what is out there now..
@The Stray Fox That is a really cool pedal board :)) You have shown some serious dedication that is for sure. Curious if you have any recordings, anything you wrote/composed ?
Anyone familar with the Therminvox ,i always wanted to learn to play one, maybe it is no too late.

Mate, great to find another Doom/Drone lover. I myself am an Opera singer (which is actually the reason that I started vaping - as soon as I was smoking Js I knew I wanted to carry on blazin, but didn't want it to get in the way of my career at all), but I'm very much a fan of metal, and over the years (with the nug helping to guide me) I gravitated towards Stoner Rock and Doom. A little more mainstream than yourself, it sounds like, with Electric Wizard being my faves. I actually got to see them play last year, and they were supported by another favourite of mine, Church of Misery. Two bucket list bands in the space of an evening!

I normally just go for the band "Bong" when I'm in the mood for some drone, or Amenra if I want it crushingly heavy, but i listened to The Fall of the Grey Winged One that you posted and really like it - going to go check out the rest of their stuff now!

I think that being a "musical chimera" as you put it, is a great blessing. I'd be so bored if I just stuck to classical, or to metal, or to hip-hop, or Italian rap (another one of my weaknesses).

Hello ,there ! I recommend exloring the art of S.P. White ,Stijn Van Cauter they have numerous projects. Uncertainty Principle and Infra Sub Ultra,The Sad Sun are among my other favorites
I am very much into the rest of the doom gentre too. Electric Wizard are the best, along with Uncle Acid and Acid King ,but there are also many great new projects, check this gem https://barbarianfist1.bandcamp.com/ . Last few years i am mostly into stoner and sludge... Crazy things are happening.. I recommend Belzebong and Bongripper too.. I can go on foreva with unknown and not so unknown band ,but i am not shy of mainstream bands like Kyuss,King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard are also great dudes :D..
@EmDeemo That is interesting . I remember S.P White had a microphone inserted in an Anthouse and he did dark piano melody as a background, the hairs on my neck went straight up the first time i heard that shit.
Haha i clearly remember some Black Metal guys called Goat Vulva recording an album in a chicken slaughterhouse,lol...

Hmm, I think once one accepts they are never going to play well, and that one can hone mistakes until they sound intended and part of a style, one can play anything (within reason - bass, guitar, keys, vocals) :D

Bass was my first love, but I wasnt allowed one as a kid so only owned one as an adult and never a decent one. I currently have a five string fretless bass and its great and I love sliding around but its not that easy to just kick out a bass line on. So fretted bass needed. My fave bass sound is a rickenbacker, but they are stupidly expensive so my plan is to get a cheaper 'neck thru' bass, and change out the electrics, and pick ups to get a more ricky like sound.

Part of my labourious process is coming up with bass lines and recording on a real bass, then programming what I was trying to play with a rickenbacker virtual bass as it sounds better than I can play or record. Im trying to knock the time it takes doing all this down a bit by having a better, decent, fretted bass. I do the same with drums, its so time consuming (i dont play the drums, but finger drumming and trying to program like a real drummer is something I attempt) :)

Here's a vague example, all the bass and drums on this are programmed, and unfinished, based around live playing by me...

unbearably light in the being....
Love finding this thread!

Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid...first, when I discovered Ray Charles, then when the Holy Trinity manifested themselves on the radio - Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard...so, music-crazy since...‘57?

played boring stuff in grade school: trumpet, baritone horn, “clarinet” (actually a soprano sax, but I didn’t know - and neither did the teacher)...gave up all that, started beating on things - legs, chest, desk, books - and so became a drummer. Used to set books and magazines out on the floor around me as if they were my drum kit - spent my “allowance” on drumsticks, used to pound those things endlessly...and then one day, I could keep a beat.

Mom pissed off my dad by buying me a drum kit - I pissed him off worse by playing along with Jimi Hendrix (first album)...the day I stopped matching Mitch Mitchell and began to play my own licks was a magic day!

Lugging drums around became my undoing...in part, because I didn’t just want to whack away - I wanted to SING...which led me to guitar, and keyboards. Total duffer at all but drums now (and rusty as hell at those), but my singing has improved, I’ve graduated to ‘advanced beginner’ on guitar, and have a shamefully large assortment of music apps on my iPad. All aspirational at this point: my goal is to be able to make it through my practice playlist *live* someday - mostly on guitar, but some of it I can only play on tambourine (harder to do well than it sounds).... Playlist ranges from Dixie Cups to Cyndi Lauper to Talking Heads to Lindisfarne to Nina Simone to Elvis Costello to Hoodoo Gurus

Gawd I love to sing...not half bad for my freaking age, either....

EDIT: As an update to my previous post about playing badly tho, the Moog Subharmonicon is the first instrument I've picked up and thought 'holy shit, I could easily jam with this, this instrument makes total sense to me, im not hitting bum notes all the time'.

That would likely change the moment I attach a keyboard to it tho :) Tho I'm considering a keyboard where you can set the scale, key etc, and the keys light up for notes that are in tune.

Brilliant, thanks for the suggestions! Going to go make a playlist now which should satisfy all my doomy needs for the next few days/weeks whilst introducing me to some new stuff!

Gotta say I love Uncle Acid. First doom band I listened to (if we're not counting Sabbath), first doom vinyl I bought, and first doom band I went to see live. Similarly, I can clearly remember the time and place I was when I first listened to Satan Worshipping Doom by Bongripper... It gives me vibes of Mick Gordon's sountrack to the 2016 "Doom" game, but just slower...

I'm also a sucker for female Vocals so enjoy Acid King a lot. Belzebong are really great too, I've only discovered them recently. I'd say they pair well with Holy Serpent, if you've not come across them. Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss also never fails to make me smile, but I can't say I've ever managed to get properly into King Gizz (although their live shows are soooo much fun). If you've not heard it already then definitely give the album Naturality by Orb a listen - I'd describe them as a cross between Sabbath and Pink Floyd, and they often open for King Gizz.

I'd rather not link anything with my name on it, just because I can't imagine people in my profession being very understanding about a colleague/employee vaporising marijuana cigarettes, but I'll see tomorrow if I can upload something anonymously. Maybe I'll record a bit of my practice and soundcloud it up here! :)

Haha, that would be cool!

BTW, I very much enjoyed "The Zygmont Jazz Trio Quartet Ensemble" that you posted earlier in the thread!

Thanks! Very much appreciated! And there is some fresh 'Zygmont' this week! A broken jam, and I didnt think the jam was any good in the first place! Realised on playback that two channels on my mixer are broken so I lost one channel of drums and the channel with the Moog Subharmonicon. Means I couldnt edit out the bum notes and the drums are well broken, so I tried to lean into the mistakes :) No overdubs, but I think better drums and an actual bassline would have much improved this.

Ya live and learn, next time I'll get it right and pull the elements together better :) Considering attempting an upload schedule to youtube of a jam a week or something.

' It’s 90 minutes of intelligent people discussing their current perspective on listening to music, nature, soundscapes and more. '

“We hear all the time. Our ears, even in sleep, unlike our eyes, are never closed. But listening is an act of conscious concentration which, in the words of John Berger, ‘…salvages meaning…’ from the words and world around us.

So how can we listen amidst the roar of these unceasingly cacophonous times, and could listening, ultimately, change the way we live?”

EDIT: New bass arrived. The finish is a little rough, but it plays nice (it was very cheap, I expected a slightly dodgy finish). The frets tho, they havent been set that great, and it needs taking into the shop. First try out and I cut my hand open on a fret! :) Complaint letter sent to the company (thomann), lets see what they offer :)

EDIT 2: Does anyone have any recommendations for any youtubers that specialise in fixing guitars up? For instance, 'sanding' frets so they dont cut me. I bleed!

Sorry for the spamming but this is a great video showing how the Subharmonicon works with polyrhythms, subharmonics, and how it sequences notes.

It really is a work of art Moog have made with this thing...

let me not oversell my skills: I know a bunch of chords, open and barre, can switch between them comfortably, can keep a solid rhythm; I know more than one strum pattern, I can keep the beat. I’m just beginning to figure out the fingerboard...it’s still a spooky place, but I am learning.
