Thank you, @SloJimFizz!

As mentioned before, here is the first unit of the doomsday series. Box tree is a very hard wood with a super smooth surface. It is that smooth that I decided to skipp the oiling and only polished it after the fine sanding. I did apply some linseed oil on the edges of the Mica in order to make the layers stick together. The mouthpiece is of course Box tree, too. Pictures of the darker units will follow.

Thank you,
vapman

It's worth adding here that René is putting up images of some new vapman editions over on OGFC.
An all white box tree and a two tone yew model. They look awesome. VAS strikes again!

Here is finally a dark one. Last year a friend gave me a box full of small pieces of wood and the pieces of this wood were just big enough to make a few units. I wasn't sure if it's worth it making vapman out of the rather dull looking blanks. Oh boy, it was worth it, the dull looking wood turned out to be quite stunning. It is a shame I don't have more of this wood. It was like the duck turning into a Swan. I don't even know the name of it, I guess it is of the Dalbergia family, it has similarities with Cocobolo and other Rosewoods but it is less dense. Man, do I love woods!!
Btw. the Box tree from above I did cut myself in neighbor's garden about three years ago. Of course I did ask the neighbor befor I took it. ;)

I realized that my oldest Vapman hasn't been cleaned in quite some time. I regularly wipe down the bowl area and underside of the mouthpiece, but almost never break out my small Phillips and remove the filter. I was hoping to get some suggestions for cleaning:

I'm pretty horrified that it's gotten to this state, I had some difficulty getting the filter off, but was able to without any damage.

I recall reading about using acetone to clean way back in the thread, is this still the recommended solvent to use?

Authorized, but IMO not recommended. Rene suggested careful attack with a pen knife blade (mechanical removal), which works for me.

Solvents seem like a simple solution, but they are solvents. Right now the junk is on the surface, solvent will dissolve some/most of it, but will also drive the contamination deep into the material before evaporating. Worth avoiding I think? Once there it's there forever, no way to flush it out?

My routine involves pipe cleaners down from the top as a routine measure (also good for the bore of the MP). The way I see it the first use or two will start the build up all over anyway, no matter what you do.

And, of course, wiping the face of the screen off on my Levi's leg when reloading.......

BTW there's a magic spacer ring that can be fitted under the screen plate (you need to sand a small flat in the wood) which is an improvement on several fronts, although where you might get one these days I don't know.

Your call, but IMO you can easily remove the vast majority of the buildup mechanically and there's really no value in getting it 'factory fresh' as it won't last that long in that condition.

Regards to all.

@almost there: It is Wenge, someone told me over email and I saw a picture of it at an online shop for precious woods.

I couldn't resist to order some of these beautiful woods, how about a purple vapman?

Wait till these woods get fine sanded and polished, they will look just spectacular! I'm a very rich man.:)

Woahh ! Purpleheart is my favorite wood :)), cant wait to see a vapman made out of it <3 amazing !!!
Btw they decided to cut old and dangerous trees in a nearby park,so they can meet the standart per square ... i felt really bad,but managed to salvage a fat log of Maclura tree... it is amazing how radiantly yellow it is..It is sad that most of it is going to be used as a firewood by the gypsies that scoop it with their horse wagons..

This is what the Aussies call 'gum trees'?

We spell it a bit different here, more 'C's and less 'K's. The area around here is simply filthy with them. Seriously. Just after the Gold Rush in California (say 1860 or so?) some guys looking to make a killing making furniture asked for a hardwood tree that grew fast and straight. We had Redwood, and various Pines and Firs (all soft) and 'scrub Oak' (not very straight with some grain issues) so they cleverly imported some gum trees from 'down under' and planted groves of them here and there. And up they grew, fast and straight. Only the wood checked randomly when it dried, so it was unsuitable for furniture. So they abandoned them (of course) and they went feral and 'took the joint over'.

About 20 years back we had a dry spell that killed off some in the wild, causing fears of wild fires. Tax money paid for thousands and thousands of the trees to be cut down (including the occasional access roads) and hauled 50 miles or so where they were made into particle board to build houses. The board makers kindly accepted them, delivered of course.

A few years back they made another pass through the park near me, Redwood Park, named for the Coast (smaller of the two) Redwoods (many of which were pushed out by the Eucalyptus). Throughout my life it's been 'the cheap firewood'. We burn it if we're allowed fireplaces (getting rarer all the time). Half the price of Oak, slightly more than Pine or Fir. Last I knew a cord (4 foot by 4 foot by 8 foot, about 90 Cubic Feet when you take the gaps out of the rack) was $150 delivered. That's five thousand pounds, give or take. That's what a meter tall, a meter wide and 3 long? Two tons, give or take. You should move here, we literally have it to burn.

These guys are local, a real fantasy land for strange woods. You can spend hours digging around, in my youth I left some hard earned money there.

We also have the 'right' snails to eat in our gardens as pests. The imported them to Santa Cruz (maybe 80 miles away on the coast) and found us uncivilized types weren't interested in Escargot so, once again they became an invasive species/pest. Other areas have a different snail which these guys displaced. They can wipe out your vegetable garden in a couple nights if they time it right. So we can feed you, too. Bring butter and garlic.

Regards to all.

Mine just arrived! Thanks René! @vapman

I cannot believe how freaking tiny it is, the pictures just don't set you up for that, I mean this is typical of most vapes, but seriously you could fucking swallow this thing!!

I was lucky enough to find the last available station from another member here, who got one without the cords from the recent last batch, but they didn't need it anymore by the time it showed up. René was able to send me the PA/cords, so now I just have to wait for the station to arrive (it is bottlenecked due to slowed covid shipping from Finland)

I am super impressed by the whole package, like the manual is just so well done! I got an imperfect 18mm WPA in Yew, along with a spare midsection, for my new pear tree basic beauty. Happy to finally be part of the vapman family! Can't wait for that station to arrive so I can try my VM, I'll be back...
