17 years worth...And Im 29 now
Welcome to the small but happy VS family
The VS was my first vape, and I haven't looked back. A nice bong, some stanky danky, a BIC and the VS=some good times.
I've only ever used a standard BIC style lighter with the VS, (A clipper to be exact as it's refillable, electric so as to eliminate the flint dust). I played around with a jet lighter for a while, but found that it was far to finicky for my tastes.
I would guess that every VS owner varies the heat they apply during a draw, but in two distinct ways: one is breath control, the other it lighter control. I prefer breath control, and a standard flame works with my methods as it has a very consistant, slow-increase temperature. The jet lighters work very well, and can taste better, but for me it just heated up the hits too quickly.
Bananiq, I think you might have stumbled upon the perfect technique for the torch lighter: I'd bet that you hold it a lot farther away from the nip than I did. That would most likely result in that 10 second time you got. I can't imagine you got combustion with a 3 second standard flame, but hey maybe your lighter just had some balls on it
Call me crazy, but I actually like taking longer, deeper hits, even if I don't get any more goodness than a hit in half the time. It kills my lung-coaled smoker friends to use the VS, but I seem to have lungs of steel when it comes to vaping
I doubt ligher choice has that much effect on the ease of use with the VS though; more how much effort you put into learning how to use your respective methods. It took me four months to find out I was "doing it" oh so wrong with mine, but since said revalation have used my clipper to big milky hits every time, (minus the "I WANT MORE" hits )
A lot of great info in this thread.
For those just starting out, another option to the "whistle" is to remember this" Hold a medium(standard bic) flame to the VS for 6 seconds, then once you have heated it for that time frame...3 second afterwards, for additional usage.
Another important thing that helps is; Make sure you do not "over load". I.E leave a small pocket of air between your product, and the top of the vapoorstar. This will ensure you do have combustion, and give ample air flow...for maximium vaporization.
As far as the issue with the bowl size; There is currently a new bowl design, being worked out. In fact, soon we will be offering 2 different bowl options to the customers. The original wood design, or a glass bowl...that will be made for GonG usage. It will also be made from premium hand blown glass, and from a VERY reputable company. More detail's about that will be coming as we get closer to C.H.A.M.P.S
Looks like Ill be the proud owner of 2 VaporStars soon
P.S.- Thanks again VaporStar & VaporOutlet.com for the VS. I cant wait to get it and milk some tubes!!!
yea youre right, maybe that time was little bit more (but the time flows so slow sometimes)
but what I wanted to emphazise is that with the same technique like I was doing with jet flame lighter without combustion, I got combustion with standart flame in half of the time. So that makes jet-flame more burnproof than regular/bic flame imho. So, jet is the winner in longer hits as well.
Glass bowl? that is fantastic news. I am looking forward to more updates on that
Oh definately, whatever floats your boat you know?
Glass bowl sounds niiiice indeed. Love how the original flame-vapes, (VS and VG) will now both offer a glass option. However I personally love the wood version myself for durability and aesthetic purposes.
Will the actual size of the bowl be changed at all from version to version? If it is at all possible to offer a bumped up size version for the wood bowl I would be all for it. Just a thought
This sounds very cool:

Some of the best hits I have ever gotten were from a VaporGenie mated to a cheap plastic bong. I'll bet a glass VaporStar would really hit nicely on a great glass bong of my choosing! Hopefully you guys will be able to keep it all glass and keep the airpath clean for the purists.
I imagine a glass Vaporstar bowl would get damn hot. I mean when I use my vaporstar the wooden bowl is pretty hot, can't imagine how hot a glass bowl would get. I touch the bowl too much too want it any hotter than it already is.
That's the plan.
There are a few idea's that will be tested. The dissipation of heat obviously being one of the biggest factors in creating something like this....however, there are definetly ways around it. The next issue will be keeping the piece available at a reasonable price point, for all to enjoy.
IMHO in case of Vaporstar (if) there will be still the stainless steel heating element - metal cap - it will not provide 100% pure clean airpath in case of its temperature reaches more than cca 800C when the stainless steel starts oxidizing, releasing minor metal fumes (which are not toxic anyway), & changing its color a little bit (like it changes with the stainless steel screens after holding them in the torch-flame).
To compare with the silicon-carbide heating element - which oxidizes at 1400-1500C stainless steel is less thermostable, but every negative has its positive and I can say that metal steel cap of Vaporstar is better at keeping steady temperature and efficiency rate than the ceramic heater of VG (the design and shape of the metal cap plays its role in this as well).
In addition, I welcome the idea of glass VaporStar bowl, and I will get one for sure.
I Think for it too work right, you would have too have a piece of glass sticking out far enough that it wont get hot so you can hold it, or use too turn the bowl between hits. would be a shame if the bowl cannot be turned because it is too hot too touch. Would make combustion all the more likely if the bowl cannot be turned without burning yourself.
I noticed if the bowl isn't rotated 1/3rd like recommended between hits, you will notice little paths of combusted material in your bowl. The vapor star doesn't heat the material in the bowl entirely. It seems too focus on a tiny path. Rotating it every hit moves that path so you get fresher material from your last hit.
Anyone else do this? it is something I have become quite fond of. After four bowls, or so, with the Vaporstar I will go one session without anything inside the Vaporstar bowl. Just using heat too vaporize all the oils that have collected inside the wooden part. Will normally get three too five good sized hits.
Ill have mine tomorrow...Gimme a day or so & Ill let ya know how it worked for me
Good to know, thanks.
Holy crap. Never even thought of this.
I've been seperated from my VS recently, but did this with my VG several times for shits and giggles and was quite confused by the vapors that came out. Now, I had already vaped a bowl, so my will to use my finer skills of observatin wasn't at its best, but in retrospect what you said seems to make quite a bit of sense.
Also, not sure if you saw my last post Vaporstar team, but is there going to be an increase in bowl size on either the wood or the up and coming glass option?
My new VaporStar was waiting for me after work yesterday and though I wanted to fire it right up, I had a problem. My bong has a GONG diffy/downstem, but connects with a rubber seal. Anyway, although I had thoroughly cleaned the glass, the seal still smelled horrible. I tried using some whip tubing to replace it, but couldn't get it over the too-wide glass. I searched the house for another substitute and came up with the nipple of a baby bottle and some silicon-based sex lube. I cut the tip off the nipple, lubed it up and pulled it over the downstem. When I had it all the way on I cut off the excess with a razor blade and eashed the whole thing in soap and water. Finally, I was ready to go.
On my first hit I counted too fast and didn't get any vapor. On the second hit. . . popped my vaping cherry.
My PD should be arriving next week (at long last), but I'll be putting the VS through its paces until then. I can already see that this will become much more effective as I get the feel and technique. So far I'm impressed, although on one hit I tasted a bit of a chemically flavor. I hope that goes away quickly.
BTW: What does "VP" stand for? It's stamped on the device instead of the three lines described in the instructions.
Ash how did you get that glass cleaned up??
I've had my VS since yesterday and I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I can't wait for the glass one to come out
I had some "fast 420", so I used that. I think it's just iso and salt with blue food coloring and perfume. I figured I should use it up because now that I'm vaping it sounds like a simple iso wash will do the trick. And, that used iso is going to contain lots of goodness for hash, tincture, or whatever.
It had been a really long time since I'd done any cleaning. It surprised me how nice my glass looked when I was done. While I was at it I also cleaned out a small (cheap) glass bubbler that we're reserving for combustion. That one had never been cleaned and needed someething a bit stronger to get the build-up out of the bowl, so I used some nail-polish remover on the end of a Q-tip. Squeaky clean.
It was funny how my wife reacted to our first vaping experience. I packed a very light bowl, just covering the screen. (It was late, and we didn't want to be up all night.) Also, I was being very cautious with the heat, not wanting to combust. Anyway, we weren't getting much visible vapor, and certainly no "billowing clouds", so she didn't believe it was going to have any effect. Then, before I could pack another one it starts to hit her and she says, "maybe we should wait i bit to see how intense this is going to get."
Are you getting lots of visible vapor? I think the trick might be to pack bigger bowls.
Ok so I received my Vapostar and all I can say is wow, this thing is very impressive! I'm currently using it with my 100ML Ehle and they seem to work perfect together, I tend to hold the heat on for awhile I would say 10-15 seconds, and I have never combusted in this thing. I load about .15-.2 and it gives me a very good 5-6 hits (which compare to any desktop unit) i 'm even liking this thing more then some of my desktop units alas Extreme, Silver Surfer, it's just very easy to use (atleast for me it is), tasty, and you only need tiny amounts, very awesome vape! This is my first lighter based vape and I kind of had my doubts, not no more. I'm glad I got to try the Vapostar. All in all this a very good vape for a person on a budget, I highly reccomend it for anyone wanting to try vaping thru your glass.
Really beats the hell out of one those cheapo ebay boxes.
Ash - I get TONS of visible vapors...Clouds to be exact, but that could be related to the bong I'm using as it does have a pretty high volume. Hits are always big & tasty and just like the VG...flame size MATTERS! I just went out this morning and grabbed a fresh pooch of tobacco and a new lighter. Got one of those Electric lighters with the silly LED light on the bottom for $1 and its refillable...Set the flame to around 1"-1.5" MAX and went to town on a fresh bowl of Haze as soon as I got back from the store for a nice Wake & Vake. Got around 12-15 hits off it.First 6-8 were nice & thick, and they began to taper off after that. One thing Ive noticed that makes it vape "better" is this...after the first 3 hits or one full revolution of the VS,I take off the top pour out the herb & regrind it in the space case then pour it back in & start the vaping again. After that,it hits nice & solid til its dead.
NoSmoke - try filling the tube with ice!!!! Makes it just that much smoother! I threw some crushed ice in my globe bong and ripped it up. Since the VS is pointing straight down it hits the ice directly and gets a lil moisture and cooled off significantly...even tho its not really needed with the VS I just LOVE the feeling of nice cool vapors flowing. Ive yet to try it with water & ice...probably have to throw it in the big tube with the beaker dry & percs filled
I think I was taking away the flame too soon. The 6 seconds recommended in the instructions seems not long enough. It was much better with more time. Or, maybe the instructions are in metric seconds.
The recommended time is a bit short depending on how moist the herbs are. If theyre really dry,6 seconds can mean combustion...dont ask how I know :/ It really does vary from herb to herb, and like I said before, flame size & distance does make a huge diff.
This is my lil trick and Ill do my best to explain it...You know how the VS has a nice fat wide body? Well take your thumb knuckle after youve lit your lighter and hold it right up against the bottom of the VS and just kinda rotate the flame/lighter with your thumbnail....rolling it up & down the side of the VS. Using this technique,Ive managed to get the most out of my VS without much burning, and the flame always seems just right.
Heres a few pix I just took to try to demonstrate it better...And the last one is me milking the Globe
So I just got my Vapostar in the mail from that quickie contest, but I don't have any glass to use it with. What do you guys recommend? Need something pretty cheap.
Ditto! I also want to get a VHW in the future and thought an Ehle 100 ml or 250 ml would do the trick.
