So I used to smoke then stopped and started making edibles. I've never used a vape before so just wondering what is a good desktop and/or portable one to start with. I guess I'm looking for potency first and taste second

Put conserving bud at the top of that list

For conserving bud you should try and choose vaporizers that use small bowls and have efficient extractions.

For plug-in vaporizers a good example are the log vaporizers.

For portables look for the Solo and the INH.

Any of them will have good taste as well.

Potency isn't a concern, one model to another. You apply heat and you get vapor. Some are just easier to use than others.
Yep. Big bowls and water filtration encourage big hits and you'll definitely use more herb that way. OTOH a vape with a small bowl that restricts hit size may be frustrating all the time. That's why a lot of people end up with something that encourages conservation of herb, and another something that can provide the big hits. The price range on good electric powered vapes ranges from around $100 to over $500, so there's a lot to choose from. One of the best buys on the low end is the Vapolution- small bowl and an all glass vapor path (both valued and rare anywhere near this price point), and the Vapo guys have been offering members a great deal-$100 with the 8" glass bowl, which usually sells for $20 by itself. http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/vapolution-2-0.4940/ This model will let you load very small amounts or more, for lung filling but manageable hits. A big hitter that's very popular and a proven design is the Da Buddha, for around $150. As mentioned, the Solo is a good portable, as a cross between a pocket portable (like the Inhalater) and a home model. There are other good models too. Take a look at the fattest vape threads for the most popular models.

Learning about vaping includes learning about different temperatures and extractions.

My advice for a desk top unit is the Herbal Aire. First rate temperature control, load as much as you'd like to vape. It so effective (convection) you can vape whole buds, you don't even need to grind for best results. I don't know another vape making that claim. For under two hundred bucks you can blow bags (poor man's volcano), direct draw, use a whip or even invert it onto your waterpipe and do it that way. Just dial up the temperature you want.

The HA is so good at extraction I routinely run my 'exhausted ABV' from my other vapes through it to get the CBD rich stuff still left. When the AVB comes out of HA it's truly spent. But HA can squeeze a bit more out of the refuse of lesser vapes.

For a portable, it's hard to beat MFLB in a lot of areas. However, I also like Vapor Genie for a 'first vape' if you can deal with the lighter part (there are no 'butane fumes' involved done correctly......). IMO it teaches you (some would say the hard way) what vaping is all about.

I'm getting an Underdog because it fits my needs; small bowl size (this means effiency, conservation of herb, and precise medication), convection (little to no need to stir herbs, again with efficiency), and the ability to use it with a bong (big and milky hits). Don't forget that an ash twig UD is only $175 (a steal IMO). Sounds like the UD would fit your needs too, Ryzuma. OH, one downside though, to have control over the temperature you need a variable voltage power supply thing (VVPS). Not really a necessity to me tho.

"In the field of pharmacology, potency is a measure of drug activity expressed in terms of the amount required to produce an effect of a given intensity."

Given this definition, I have to disagree.

shorter path lengths have less losses, even if you recover the actives left behind on the surface of the air path, I believe much will still be lost. because as you cool vapor, it becomes visible, meaning you're no longer dealing with vapor as much as you are dealing with vapor condensate. I theorize that much of this active substance is lost on the mucous coating of the lungs, which jives with all of my anecdotal evidence.

for a desktop unit, the most efficiency/efficacy/conservation comes from the smallest bowls and the shortest, most insulating vapor path, as well as the highest temps. look for a short plastic tube through which the vapor will travel.

or you could consider the Gnome or Ubie which are the most potent portables.

be forewarned, the downside to potency is pain, lots of it, as hot, dry air really irritates the lungs.
but it is quite potent with amounts you would have previously considered impossible to get away with.

To this I say think of this hole theory like a bong and a joint. With a joint, yeh you can get hits straight to the brain since it's pretty much just smoke directly to your bloodstream, but with a bong, even though you are losing potency from water and percs, you can smoke a hole joints worth of cannabis in one hit. it saturates your lung in one blast. yeh.

I can pretend like what you've said makes sense. If it makes you happy.

mod note: Maybe you can pretend to be nicer with your response next time.

A good way to start would be to enter the term "temperature" in the search box. But here is a thread to get you started. ;)

Some darn good advice here ffor sure. When making your decision don't over look the MFLB. She may not be the #1 in any one area, but the lessons learned from mastering her will definatly carry over to more "advanced" vapes.
Good luck on your search and please let us know how things are working out for ya. Information is knowledge, and anything you can share helps us all.
You're entering a whole new world, so HAVE FUN!

And also depending on how you want to look at it :p

The MFLB is my go to when it comes most of what your list encompasses as (for me) it takes more time to enjoy less. I get to vape a trench, crush, repeat, dump, reload, repeat. By the time I get to the loading of the 3rd, Im realizing that Im pretty good. After the 3rd (or 4th) I am stumbling back in on the amount that would have taken my SSV or VG (twice) to load. :2c:
