Hey all,

I haven't been very active in this thread, but I've been enjoying my HI for a few months now. Obligatory pics:

Anyways, I love this vape but since I moved into a new apt it hasn't been performing too well. In certain outlets when I leave it plugged in overnight, the HI is completely cold in the morning. I've also noticed in my living room the HI struggles to get to vaping temperature.

At first I thought the power supply was damaged (due to a rattle and the fact the case pulls open slightly when I unplug it). However, I think the issue has more to do with the wiring in my apt. When I plug the HI into a kitchen outlet, it performs flawlessly; heats up in <5min and stays on overnight.

With non-kitchen outlets I've had limited success; even though the power supply light is on, the HI either won't heat up, or won't get hot enough.

So, would changing the power supply make a difference, or am I stuck vaping in the kitchen? I find it hard to believe my living room outlets can power a large TV, stereo, and laptop, yet not the HI...

Bouldorado, Most likely culprit to me would be that your power supply cord is damaged somewhere, where if you were to move the wire around you'd see your power suddenly cut off and then resume. Do you have a multimeter to test with? I bought a really cheap $15 one many years ago and it's been valuable.

Deadhead, I have the PD powersupply that reads approx 14.3v unloaded, but while my HI is under load with it, the readings from my multimeter are 13.4v - 13.6v.

Alright - two things....

1. I was having one slight problem with the u-tube. I was finding with my new micro saber that when adapting to water with certain glass pieces that sometimes because of how shallow or short the u-tube is you can't always get a flush connection. So what I did was I united the turbo tube and the u-tube and I got.....

2. I did some work with the VVPS and wanted to share my findings. I used a handheld laser surface thermometer to measure the core temperature at different voltages. For each setting so far I took 5 separate readings so I could gather an average result. Funny thing is it's alot harder to take the temperature of a Hi than one would think. Directing the laser into the core averaged a reading 120 degrees. I found the most accurate temperature within the wood right above where the core is seated.

I also found it quite interesting that when changing your voltage load the increase in temperature was surprisingly fast. In order to come up with some type of a control I used the extreme q (without a fan)set at a similar temperature and matched my ABV. Now, I know what your gonna say. How the fuck could you get similar ABV at those low temps on the Q? Instead of using a whip while trying to emulate the Hi I simply used a DBV wand directly into Q and Voila - TOAST!

Here's where I'm at so far....

10.87 Volts = 199
11.00 Volts = 209
11.18 Volts = 213
11.25 Volts = 225
11.49 Volts = 230
12.04 Volts = 252

I plan on going higher tonight :cool:

Bouldorado, you need a new ps. The fact that your HI works fine 'any' of the time, says you need a new ps. If it was the HI it wouldn't do that. It would either perform, or not.

Ok thanks, looks like I'll start shopping for a new power supply. Just strange that the HI will consistently work in the kitchen yet is hit or miss elsewhere. I tried it again in the living room with TV and stereo unplugged, and it still failed to heat up. The metal post was cold to the touch after being plugged in for 10 min.

I agree bouldorado - I would assume it's the PS as well.

I just ordered on of these after Alan mentioned it was something he was using to help dial on your Hi settings. I can adjust my VVPS based on amperage used. If you had one of these, you would most likely see that at times your Hi wasn't pulling any power at times further confirming your need for a PS.

Thanks, Mom.

I've read the thread, so I had a good idea of how much cool air I need to let in while using a stock PS. My problem is that I have a condition called "Essential Tremor" which limits the dexterity of my hands. I can't make clean, smooth movements, so I am trying to figure out the best method for me. In that vid you can see my "shake as fast as you can on the edge" method.:wave:

Ed - It is pretty amazing how thin you can get the wood with the new design. That was some wood I could have never used before. I just use a little WD40 for coolant on certain operations. I try to keep the metal machining to a minimum. Have been turning more wood, glass, and silicone on my precision lathe than metal.

Boulderado - Thanks for posting the photos. Glad you are enjoying your HI. Sorry to hear it wasn't heating properly. Glad you were able to get it heating properly again.

mvapes - Love the bar bell. Those tubes can be used in so many different configurations. The voltage data is very interesting.

Stu - Glad to see it arrived safely. Thanks for posting the video. Sorry to hear about your dexterity. You did have a good technique though. That is either something very potent in the roasting tube or it is running very hot. It would be interesting to see what voltage you are running. I have started using a power meter to see how many watts are being used at various voltages.
Have fun trying all your roasting tubes.

You know, one of my worst nightmares at the moment is Alan pulling a Cookie on us (refer to the last couple pages of the Wychwood forum if you don't know who Cookie is)

Alan, I had my HI connected to my Kill-A-Watt so that I could measure the voltage. It was at 14.0 when I filmed that video. It moved around between 13.5 and 14.2 throughout the evening. So yeah, it runs pretty hot. I need @CentiZen to hurry up with his VVPS creation so that I can try to tame this baby a little bit.

Here are a couple pics of my new HI. I was shooting solo so I couldn't really manage to get a good milk shot. Also I'm working on my technique still. But so far so good. I'm honestly enjoying it most right now with just the glass stem.

With that said, mvape's barbell is definitely useful. I thought the suction on the u-tube could be tighter as well and this set up really helps fix it.

Jeppy, we should do a a reality show where we swap vapor garages. "Nor Cal / SoCal Vapor Garage Swap". I'm sure TLC would air it.... if not Comedy Central? :shrug:

So I'm still working on finding the right technique for my glass tube (a 16 inch M&M beaker). Does anyone have any tips?

It's not that it isn't hitting hard, it is. It's just I know I can get milkier hits somehow since I managed to achieve some really thick ones somehow. I'm using mvape's barbell setup as a connector right now.

With that said, I'm really loving the roasting tubes Alan makes. These things rock. so efficient yet so powerful!
