Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I have pressed at lower temps and I don't like the waxy consistency. I prefer it a little stickier.

It also depends on what strain it is and what I'm doing with it. Today, I pressed some Cinderella for edibles and so I went higher for better yield. I don't get any yield at 190F. I press at 200 or 210 if I want it tastier but, never under 200F.

And, it probably also depends on how big your press is. I am pressing 2 gram pucks on 4" diameter plates.

Plus, I'm sure you verified your temps. I have heard that many factory units show a different temp on the display than is actually on the plates.

Lots of ways to skin a cat when it comes to rosin.

edit, I may be wrong here, it looks like people are pressing long and hot enough to do some significant decarbing.

Here are some test results showing the decarboxylation. I assume this dark food grade rosin was pressed at very high temperatures and who knows for how long, but as you can see the levels of THC vs THC-A are reversed.

http://archive.analytical360.com/m/concentrates/675507

Then what I would guess is a standard rosin pressed below 220F.

There is obvious decarboxylation that is occuring from the process I imagine, but I have no idea what condition this material is. I'm just guessing here :2c:

uh I believe food grade rosin means the decarbed it after on purpose. Those are crazy numbers on that site, and the rosin looks horrible lol.

SO based on that site, it looks like pressing too high is decarbing, I wonder what they are pressing at and for how long. It's all dark because o fit too, so either they just all used old material that was already partly decarbed, or they are cooking it.

I'm used to seeing this;

http://archive.analytical360.com/m/concentrates/527504

but I stand corrected, poor tech can cause decarbing.

Yeah that is not the best looking rosin  I imagine the temperatures/times we are pressing at is not decarbing the material much, if any depending on the method. But I've wondered the method to press out some fully activated rosin to just avoid having to process it any further.

ya this is why I argued with hackerman, because all our old results were beautiful. I wonder why people went backwards in tech..

I tested the pot that I pressed and it showed zero THC. So, I think it might be from the press.

I'll run the tests again........

EDIT: I suppose it will also depend on the temp and time you press. I press at about 240F for 10 to 15 seconds. Maybe 20.

Given time mj will decarb itself, so if you tested say rosin from 8 month old buds vrs testing two week old buds I'm sure your numbers will vary, even off the same plant. You can kind of tell that just by looking at each rosin. The newer butter easy and is light in color while the older stuff is stiffer, and darker and doesn't butter much. Btw I press fresh stuff at 190 and mature buds at 200.

@psychonaut while I havn't tried it I've seen utube videos where they turn rosin into shatter. They put rosin on a piece of folded parchment and run a hair straightener over it until it turns stiff and dries hard.

he didn't mean to make shatter, he means to decarb is by pressing it long and hot on purpose.

Yeah sorry I'm talking about doing crazy stuff with the rosin! I am just curious if we can achieve THC rosin instead of THC-A rosin with just our press, and if so how efficient would it be. It seems goofy considering you can decarb it in the oven fast enough.

I'm not so sure color is always a result of temperature. The rosin in my avatar was pressed at my usual 240F. I have found color to be more strain dependent than anything. That LemonOG just comes out.... Lemon Yellow, no matter what temperature. Even tastes a little citrusy. LOL

Darkness is cause by both cure leangth and heat for any cultivar. I didn't realize you were so new, sorry. So no matter what the cultivars normal color is, if you cure it too long or over heat it during the press, it'll darken. the longer you keep it on heat, the darker it will continue to get. You can try this yourself.

On a more uncommon note regarding rosin color, there are some cultivars that have purple and red's in the trichomes which can darken the rosin. La Plata Lab's Flubber (Sour Pez x Alien Bubba Berry) is one I remember, the BHO was always chocolate brown and I presume it was blasted by the producer fresh after cure.

This Cinderella99 I press is dark, no matter what temp. And, it leaves a giant purple stain on the parchment where the puck was.

Here is a shot of some butter I made. It's sill a little green but you can see the water in the bowl is nice and clear. This was the last wash.

ya darkness from cultivar or cure cannot be pressed lighter no matter how low you press. I have to assume you can make it darker though if you press it hot and long.

I remember reading on hightimes that u could press fresher (purple buds) and get that purple color translated into the resin even

Rosin press pucks after pressing (ABP-- Already Been Pressed???) question:

I never see anyone talking about vaping the pressed puck material. Can't you chip off pieces and vape the pressed
bud to get the last goodies out of it??

Thanks

you can make coconut oil, butter or chop it up and vape it. There's often lots of goodies left in there.

i shred my pucks in a coffee grinder and vape them in my Mighty,
normaly i mix them up with some other herbs because the taste isnt the best
but it works none the less :)

edit.
sry to bring it back again but u guys did ur job getting me nervous about the waxes and fats in the rosin that
could possibly lead to some sort of pneumonia....what dish temp are u vaping at...i use my saph insert at 480-500F (Surface temp, NOT pid) :)

That just happened...
I tried iso washing a half pound of chips. I got a small quantity of really bad dark return from it. I threw it all away in disgust and have just been throwing my chips away ever since. It just wasn’t worth the effort for the return I got.

I don’t think I’m leaving very much in my chips is my conclusion.

the lipid pneumonia has never been "proven" from consuming this, it was just a warning to be careful of consuming too much wax as a "just in case" the body reacts to it the same way over time. Don't let my nervousness hold you back too much :)

All the time i was thinking like its solventless and without combustion so
in the best case its healthy :D :D :D

Yes, this. ISO washing pucks rarely gets great results because you've also moved a lot of the waxes and bad stuff to the surface which then washes out quickly. I threw mine away 2 days ago, lol. That's why I didn't even bring it up, better off with coconut oil or chop/vape.
