Private Island- Stonerland.com

Hey guys. I figure this would be a good website to talk about this, as I know there is a large group of people who enjoy living a "stoner" lifestyle, or at least one that includes marijuana. However, many of us are required to hide our illegal drugs from the police and other pesky people. An idea that has been brought up many times; an idea that includes buying an entire island, is a good way to avoid the feds. I (obviously) agree with this idea, but the issue of raising the required amount of money has been the major drawback. I would attribute this to the kind of people who push this- mostly teens and young people who do not have the required knowledge of economics and politics to turn the idea into a reality. Do any of you think that this is possible? Please discuss.

P.S.
This website (Stonerland.com) is not in ANY way shape or form my idea or property and I have no stake in the money that gets raised. I also do not know the person who created the website but stumbled upon this.

Laughable idea. If some stoner has the money for an island they will buy it for themselves.

Ummm there kind of is that island already, except it's not an island.

It is called Portugal and they have extremely progressive drug laws.

I met a girl from there and she said people smoke all sorts of stuff in the streets, no big deal.

The last place I'd want to live is where people are shooting up on the street.

Yeah most def. I recall seeing some nasty videos of an Amsterdam needle program. The idea is harm reduction and while I don't want to get into politics, some argue harm reduction = enabling.

Hard drugs not only ruin lives, but they destroy communities. I was in a bad section of an urban area very recently and you can physically see what toll it has on the surrounding environment. Very visceral and unpleasant.

Lol is this Peaceful Stoner Island or Crazed Junky Island?

I'd wager it would be the entitlement capitol of the world where everyone expects free housing, food, weed, health care, and don't want to pay jack shit for it.

I know some will say " well lets just live off the land" yet these will be the same people that don't have a clue about sustaining off the land. Especially a small island that won't have a diverse group of tasty animals to eat.

I'm sure big game is limited so the land animal protein would be scarce except for the sea stuff. Maybe you could dabble in monkey brains or something lol.

I'd imagine an agrarian society and it'd pretty much be farm or die. Good fats from fish and coconut but you'd need a good carb source or I'd imagine you'd be real hungry.

Hehe kind of fun to imagine tho.

Ya but if it's on a select few streets, and the gov't gave out free controlled doses, and it keeps them from breaking into my house or robbing other people for $$ to get high on a daily basis, then im for it.

but back on topic, a nice stoner dream of mine is my own island with my own laws ;P

They've done a study on the decriminalization in Portugal since it's been in effect for almost 12 years now and they've found an overall decrease in drug use pretty much across the board. It's more about education and rehabilitation than making people into criminals and it's worked the way it was meant to.

Most governments wont want to let a a bunch of stoners write their own laws on an island which that government sees as it's own. What you really need is an independent sovereign state. Unfortunately I don't really think that you can buy them on the open market due to technicalities. However, all is not lost. You can "take over custodianship" of the Principality of Sealand for a cool $900 million, and I'm certain that you can write your own laws. It's not totally officially a recognised state, but they maintain they are and it's about as close as you're going to get.

Sealand is a bit nuts- I actually used to work in the seas surrounding it during my late teens. Basically it's an old anti aircraft fort/base from World War 2, built on legs in the sea 7 miles off the English shore. After the war the initially fell into disuse, before enterprising pirate radio operators realised they were outside the limit of territorial waters (at that time it was 3 mile limit) and it was a perfect place to broadcast from, immune from the authorities. Then in the late 1960's a former british army major captured the fort for himself and kicked off the radio dj's. He wrote his own constitution for the place, produced his own currency, postal stamps and passports, and declared it his own country "Sealand". Higher level recognition came after an attempted 'coup' by the prime minister of Sealand (assisted by German and Dutch mercenaries), which in the end led to the prime minister being held in the fort on a charge of "treason to Sealand". The Prime Minister also held a German passport, and so the German government became a little concerned. The UK courts were powerless to enforce his release, and so a German diplomat had to make a visit to the island in order to secure the PMs release. But the PM still claims rightful authority and maintains a "goverment in exile" called the Sealandic Rebel Government from his home in Germany.

It still goes strong today- Around 150'000 Sealand passports have been issued and you can, for a fee, become part of the Sealand aristocracy and be a Lord or Lady. The 2007 census shows 27 inhabitants with literacy of over 95%, GDP of $22'000 per capita and 0% below the poverty line. I've no idea what their attitude towards MJ is, but I know that at one time Wikileaks were thinking of basing their servers there, and Piratebay also attempted to buy it. This year an online casino is apparently going to be opened from the 'principality'. Maybe it would be a great location for a grow op too!!!

It's mad. It's a shame that most of these loopholes have either already been found and exploited or closed up; I'd like the opportunity to rule my own island too.

What would be so bad about a seafood diet?

if you have enough water and enough soil(not just a thin layer over bare rock) sustaining yourself on an island should be very well possible. it could get harder if you have no gardening/growing/farming experience. but I think the problem with projects like this is that no one is going to invest a lot, and so everyone will have only a small piece, on wich sustaining yourself becomes harder and requires more inbtensive agriculture, and the luck of getting assigned a fertile piece.
if it's just one or a few people it woud be better, a while ago I saw a documentary about a guy who bought an island and together with someone else transformed it s he could live off of it, let's see if I can find it

and ofcourse just buying the island is only part of what it will eventually cost you

You make an awful lot of assumptions, ya know.

Anyways, the closest we'll ever get is Sealand, as Wat said, and even then it would be stupid hard and basically pointless. A fun afternoon daydream for sure, but not realistic in any way possible.

I vote him^^ off the Island, I don't think he has enough imagination :p

I love that Sealand Idea btw. Back in the '60's a now very well known & popular legitimate radio station started out as a pirate station on a boat for the same reasons. Back in the late '90's a buddy of mine bought that boot and turned it in to a discotheque, man we had some wild parties on that thing. Unfortunately he wasn't a very good businessman & the success & fun didn't last long, but I'll never forget those parties....should we just get a boat instead of an Island perhaps?
