I just wanted to see what response I'd get from this. Getting a lot of backwash from a new, level, filled to halfway of top perc Mobius 60b whenever I take a decently hard pull and just wondering if that's normal for most glasses. If you could respond with what brand and model you have and your answer, that'd be really helpful too.

Wow seven "Never's"...I wonder if y'all just don't pull as hard as I do or your pieces are just boss.

There's a certain element to technique to it, but there are a few factors that could be at play.

Are you getting backwash on test pulls, or during, or after (the clear) a hit?

Is it just crazy stacking all the way up, or little droplets shooting up and hitting you?

Do you have any other high diffusion glass you could compare it to?

Anyways, here are some tidbits that might help.

    - sometimes pulling too hard can cause your bubbles to pop, resulting in lower stacking, but more little droplets flying up towards your mouth. I find this more-so on test pulls, than puling harder to clear a hit.

    - water seems to get a bit stale after a session or 2, and can get really frothy leading to crazy high stacking. A similar effect is caused by rezblock, though not as pronounced IME.

    - try adjusting your water levels a bit. A higher water level can sometimes lead to less stacking in a piece, so counter intuitively, it may actually help to put a bit more water in the piece.
less water should also lead to less instances of splashback, but can lead to less satisfying diffusion

    - try just not pulling as hard (this is only really a good recommendation if you aren't getting splashback during the actual hit, but get it on the clear).
Sometimes when I'm clearing one of my fritter pieces, I notice the water coming up higher than usual, and either slow my draw speed, or stop hitting it entirely for a second. Let the water settle and finish the clear.
As I said, this one is only a viable option for when you're getting intermittent splashback when clearing, not during the hit.

    (I voted never ;))
    Edit:
Also, I don't think I pull particularly hard...
I don't try to pull softly, but also don't necessarily try to rip as hard as I can.

Wow, first, thanks for the detailed answer. This was really helpful. I guess my issue was that, in thinking a high end glass was the next gen in everything, I assumed that there should be no backwash at all no matter how hard I pull. It seems that's not the case, then?

It was pretty much just test pulls. I've got a Solo but no GonG, so I've been just finagling around with my fingers to create as much of a seal as possible. So when I go to clear it, the lack of tight seal to begin with probably makes it the equivalent of a test pull. Do you know what that is, by the way?

Not so much stack as a whole rush of water in my mouth. Is that normal on test pulls? Should you be able to get little droplets on a moderate test pull?

    No

This is a brand-spanking new piece.

Huh...perhaps I'll try to add more water in. I tried less water (up to the disc) and still got a mouthful.

Mmm haha maybe I should have made it clear from the beginning that I'm just talking about the clear. I'll edit my first post.

I prefer taking the hit in one big pop after regulating my draw for so long during the pull.

Thanks again for the response, man! Looking forward to hearing more of what you have to say.

He is asking about the water you use. After several uses your water will start to collect oils that will cause it to have a higher TDS (total dissolved solids) concentration.

The "dirtier" the water, the more it will stack.

So if you are not already, try some bottled water.

I only get splashback if I add too much water and pull at full lung power.

Try reducing your water level so it just covers the bottom perc. The stereo matrix isn't a true double chamber (each perc uses the same water) so you should still have very good diffusion.

I don't. I have two pieces from Leviathan and both have splash guards. I've yet to get any splash.

Update... I tried REALLY hard and got some backsplash on a test clear. Cant say Id ever pull that hard when actually using the piece though. Needed completely empty lungs with 0 restriction in the airpath.

Am I wrong to feel disappointed that I'm getting backsplash at normal water levels on my brand new Mobius piece?

You're absolutely not wrong to be disappointed.

IMO you're issue is caused by your hit style, not the piece itself, but if the piece doesn't hit how you want to, you have every right to be disappointed.

It seems that you're getting the splashback because you're trying to clear it like a monster after having a controlled draw during the hit.

Did you try playing with the water levels a bit?

Aside from dropping the water, or just going a little bit gentler on the clear, I can think of what else would help you :(

Haha thanks, I appreciate you saying that. Totally understand and agree with your point, though. I even tried dropping the water to just fill the first perc and I still got a bit (we're talking water in mouth, not just specks) on a clear that was moderately hard, but I didn't even think was too crazy.

Can't stop wondering if this piece is just defective or something because I really don't think I'm trying to suck the life out of the piece every time and it's not like I haven't used bongs before...

On the other hand, I'm still using it and kind of growing fond of it hahaha. If I could walk into a store and trade this in for a Clear and some extra cash, I would do that in a heartbeat (I think). But thinking of having to talk with the reps and figure out if I can even return it, then ship and wait at least a week for a new piece...gahh the agony! Just having some glassware exponentially increases the range of my Solo!

Nah, unless you want to sell it cheap. :D I'd kiss the water on the 60T if I was doing test pulls all day but when actually using it and hooking it up to something with restriction it won't stack that high. Also it looks kind of counter-intuitive but the lower diameter mouthpiece on the B leads to more splash back over the T tubes, water fills the mouthpiece easier and you get splash back.

Remember how hard you have to suck on the Solo stem? Try covering the slide with your fingers so barely any air at all gets in to the piece and try pulling on it again. You should get 2-3 inches of bubbles but nothing into your mouth. Pulling as hard as I can on either the Cloud or LSV won't splash back so I doubt you'll be able to do it via the Solo with a more restricted air path.

I voted just sometimes. but as a general rule thats how i know where to set my water levels at. no splashback? ok im good to go now.

also I have generally found this to be just above where the diffusers begin anyways. all except my evo turbine. that thing likes more water than i would generally give other pieces.
