4 hours seems a bit excessive, I don't even use vac purge, and the oil I make is pure as the driven snow. Your's looks incredible. Just not needed to vac that much. I find a low and slow water bath is more than enough to rid of all butane. Even the ocd will only vac around 5 times, not 5 hours. After a few times your just stirring up volatile molecules, not ridding yourself of butane. That's the taste, those volatile terpenes.

    looks nice...welcome here

so how much of the flavor has been preserved and how much do you think got lost?

I myself am still having a hard time figuring out when to stop the vac. And my experience is once you have gone too far, read lost some terps, you will not get that flavor back...Then again there is people leaving it in the vac for sevral hours, like you did. So how about the flavor? Can you tell us anything about that?

now go and concentrate then come tell us how flavorful it was;)

As far as flavor goes its pretty tasty. Ive done alot of blue dream runs and tried a few different things each time and they all turned out the same as far as taste goes.. i'd Like To try both longer low heat purges and shorter purges of the same batch for some taste testing.

I recently did a ridiculously long overnight purge at 100. On a jack herer trim run and it was pretty well preserved anda tad tastier than usual trim batches ive done at higher heats

Unless you have pure N-butane, your oil is far from pure, no matter how you've attempted to purge it.

i would love more info on this, i've been thinking about getting some n butane and looking into that

Basically no commercial butane PERIOD is pure n butane.

yes i realize this, i was wondering about where ur info comes from for n butane and how to use that

Look up tamisium extractors. I believe you need a license to order the n butane but I'm not 100% sure. It is very expensive, which is why you need a tamisium extractor to recover and reuse the butane.

It's not ridiculous at all in that it more than makes up in butane costs, is very safe when used properly and is dead consistent in results provided you know what you're doing.

It's fun to dab in various things (see what I did there?), but the extraction process is not safe, no matter what BHOBRO420 says in a random thread on a random forum (made the name up, no offense if there is one.. lol) if you tie a t-shirt around your mason jar.

In all seriousness, try not to blow yourself up. You sound unsure enough to make me nervous.

Lol, unsure i am not. Just no need for a couple thousand dollar extractor to make good bho for myself. Mb someday if got big.

I hear you, bro... Just be careful is all I'm saying! :)
It's the safety factor I'm worried about more so than expensive equipment providing better results (rather, more consistent than better, I'd say). Blowing yourself up would suck for all involved ;)

The dry ice method seems cheaper and easier with no purge needed. I have never attempted any such method. My only method is taking wand hash from ssv and mixing it with kief to make hash balls. They are great so I guess I'm aking, are these other methods worth the hassle?

It depends on what you want to get out of the work.

    Do you want maximized flavor?
    How important is potency?
Do you want a smooth hit you can't differentiate from a normal breath of air or do you like a bit of harshness?
(There are a few more questions to ask but I want the more experienced members to post them as I am still a neophyte in many ways)

Personally, being in a state hostile to cannabis (medicinal or not) makes it worth the effort. Minimal/no plant material, ability to freeze and store in glass vials, potency in relation to dose, and portability are all pros for me. I know everything in the above could be applied to cannabis flowers and other material, but this is something I've found works best for me and maybe it will benefit others.

I was initially a bit worried about using isopropyl alcohol (and solvents in general) but I took the time and learned the basic chemistry of the processes involved. A few tries and quite a few mistakes later, I learned and refined personal QWISO techniques. After that I went to butane. Now I am in no way confident at all in my BHO technique, but I have had fantastic results despite my inexperience. I read "hassle" in your post and honestly, I think making BHO is less of a "hassle" in terms of the time and effort.

    BHO
A SSTB, some Vector butane (5X refined), a pyrex dish (and an Oil Slick pad may science bless its creator with bountiful fortune :D ) and a few minutes outside until enough of the butane has dissipated. After that, pyrex with Oil Slick pad in water bath and heat for a while below 200℉ (or use the vacuum chamber if my neighbors aren't around to complain about the noise).

*Time outside on average: 15 mins (35 is my max but those were unusual circumstances)
*Time waiting without vac on average: 2 hours (personal safety practices make it take this long for me)
*Time with vac purge on average: 30 mins (however, I'm still learning about vac techniques)
    _______________________________________________________________________

*Total time without vac: ~2 hrs 15 mins
*Total time with vac: ~45 mins (see caveat above though)

    QWISO
(for the sake of long overdue brevity I'll break down times only)

Time outside: N/A (as I can't leave it outside in my area)
Time inside with water bath: ~3 hours*
Time inside without water bath: ~24 to 36 hours**

*I DO NOT advise doing this indoors as it's an unnecessary hazard to let isopropyl alcohol fumes fill one's living space (even with all the fans on and windows open, which is another unnecessary risk as it draws undue attention to oneself if one has neighbors like me). ALWAYS FOLLOW LAB SAFETY PRACTICES WHEN POSSIBLE.
**I DO NOT advise doing this as well for the same reasons as before. In addition, one must make sure nothing happens to the QWISO during this time (which is difficult with pets in my case).

I apologize if this is too long a post or too in-depth for your question, but it's an answer I wish I had received when I was considering entering the solvent extraction game.

To add to that greatly informative and detailed post made above. It also depends on what application you wish to use your hash for. For general purposes you can think of solvent extractions as an essential oil and other mechanical sifting techniques as just hash. While dry ice hash is an easy way to produce hash its also a relatively crude concentrate compared to others, particularly compared to solvent based extractions being discussed. For instance a high quality solvent extracted oil will melt cleanly and can dabbed with an oil rig or can be used in vapes like the Cera EO, Persei, Omicron, and other Pen based vaporizing systems. Where as bubble hash, kief, dry ice hash, and other sifted concentrates still retain to much plant matter and waxes and will foul those systems up.

    You're welcome!
(thanks Puffer, I forgot about application-specific uses)

After some more thought, I think it's worth mentioning glycerin/propylene glycol (G/PG for abbreviation) in relation to solvents. I imagine that if you grow your own and don't want to work with isopropyl/butane/hexane and so on, G/PG are viable options.

The catch to this method of course is the time needed. It takes up to 60 days (please correct if wrong) for the G/PG to sufficiently extract what you want from the material. I imagine SSVUN-YAH's hash balls would go over quite well in G/PG. If you're looking to use a pen vape or e-cig, this would seem ideal to me.

    Full Disclosure for Consideration
I'm making these statements as a former smoker of cigarettes. I used an e-cig with G/PG mixtures to stop smoking completely. I have not used G/PG mixtures with cannabis. I have not tried creating G/PG mixtures with cannabis. I strongly suggest seeking further information before making a decision.

Ok slightly OT but i will indulge for the sake of complete and accurate info

Being that VG (vegetable glycerin) or PG (propelyne glycol which is just VG and alcohol) has a fair amount of polar solvents in it, this will extract more plant material and impurities. While this is not suitable for an extraction of hash or oil, it is good for an edible administration route because if the tincture is held in the mouth it bypasses the digestive and is absorbed through the sub-mucousal tissue into the blood stream giving you a faster peaking, but shorter lasting high. This is useful for patients who's digestive system may have problem processing cannabinoids, cant hold down food for edibles, or needs faster relief.

A cold extracted glycerin tincture can take up to 60 days, a glycerin tinc prepared warm like a crock pot extraction can be ready in about a day or less depending on your process

While high grade solvent extractions like bho can be homogenized into a glycerin mixture eventually for use in an ecig vaping system, the results are normally sub-par and inconsistent enough that its not worth the trouble imo. If you are interested in using a pen vape system i would reccomend one of those cited in my last post a Thermovape or Delta9Vapes product :2c:
