I have some vegetable glycerine and will be trying my hand at a tincture tomorrow. I have 2 oz trim of Afgoo and 20 grams of bud. I noticed someone was running their batch through the cycle twice for a more potent tincture. Also putting the glycerine in at the beginning of the last hour instead of at the start because it was getting too thick? Is it best that I go by the directions?

    Do I need to decarb?

Anyone with experience with the vegetable glycerine and making a tincture?

Above post I wrote that last night before bed. I must of been tired, obviously I didn't proof read. When I said above putting the glycerine in the last hour. I was meaning to say soy lecithin put in the last hour.

I've started my tincture with the glycerine. I plan on putting the soy lecithin in about half way through. I am going to have my tincture run for 5 hours. I will report back later.

My coconut oil with the ABV that I made last week isn't really strong enough IMO. I wonder if I would have used a longer cycle, it would have been better? I just used the 1 hour oil cycle.

It's good to practice with something that's not too expensive.

@CarolKing one of the things that has changed with MB is that they are no longer advising using soy lecithin. They are recommending sunflower lecithin because it is a healthier option. If all you have is the soy, go ahead and use it. But you might want to keep this in mind for future projects.

Decarbing is recommended with fresh herb.

I don't know that running your abv for longer would have helped. Try soaking the abv in your oil overnight before running it in the machine. I would also run it at no hotter than 160 degrees. You also may find using more abv than you did might be necessary.

Just threw out my soy lecithin, never was comfortable with it.
Besides the toxic gmo issues, even organic soy can create health issues if it's not fermented.
"Organic sunflower lecithin" doesn't seem to exist?

Edit: Now I have some of this coming from ebay.

I didn't realize the the type of Lecithin had been changed. I just bought a big container of the soy lecithin a couple of weeks ago. That one got past me. I did look up the new, new instructions for Magical Butter Maker online and it mentioned the change. I wish I would have realized that.

My fault. It says on the box to keep checking for any change in the instructions.

I am having my tincture go through an 8 hour process. I added the Lecithin when I added 4 extra hours to the tincture. I started with a 4 hr proces and decided to make it 8. Hopefully it will get complete extraction. I have an 1 1/2 hrs to go.

It was difficult to strain the glycerine. It took me about a half hour. I first strained with the cheese cloth. I then used the strainer that's provided with the Magical Butter Maker because it's a very fine mesh. I spilled about a 1/4 cup. I have a total of about 2 3/4 cups total after the process. I started with 4 cups. It a deep green color.

I tried some before bed. I felt tired when ready bed. I will be testing over the next few days for potency. I ordered some of the Sunflower Lecithin for further extractions. Off to the side of the bottles is the strainer, it's up side down. I washed it, it's drying.

So i finally got around to making some canna-coconut oil!

This is half the oil i made. I grineded then decarbed my herb in the oven before throwing it into the machine. The instructions state for best results do not grind, I'm not sure if it will make a big difference. I emaild MB asking them how the decarb feture worked because the instruction manual didnt mention it. I never got a responce yet.
    The oil smells great !,

    Made some brownies .
I made a milk shake with the remaining oil i had left.About 90 minutes ago I ate one brownie and drank the milk shake to wash it down.

I am feeling alright off the dose. Feeling very relaxed, laughing, Over all just feeling great. MB2 is definitely recommended.

My next batch will be from ABV most likely!
I will probably be making oil again, but i want to maybe try another sitting allowing it to bond with the oil for longer then an hour. I'm not sure if this will work, i hope make more potent oil.

Oh and i also made a little bit of salve! In case i need it for any kind of pain i may feel, I've made some before with abv oil and it worked great!

MB has since changed their instructions to grind prior to doing an infusion.

The machine will decarb in the first part of a cycle, but many feel that this decarb is not thorough enough and will do the additional decarb in the oven prior to using the machine.

Hello all you fine folks I'm new here- but not new to making butter :) I too have purchased a magical butter machine- I've been reading all the MB threads but I'm noticing nobody is talking about the temps they used. So if you respond to this thread please be sure to list your ratio and the tempature used. For example my first batch was 1oz to 1lbs of butter @ 160 degrees. This produced a light colored butter that is mostly THC-A (this is by design BTW) due to the light decarb at 160. I have a high tolerance so I tend to make my butter as strong as possible. I've noticed a common thread between those who's butter came out weak- they all used 160. The 160 temp did not make strong enough butter (mostly THC-A and not activated THC) so I'm thinking of putting the strained butter and the mark (the sludge) back in the MB and running it for an hour at the 220 or 250 temp setting. Has anyone made butter using the 220 or 250 temp setting? How much butter and meds did you use? And for how long at what temp? How effective was it?
    Thanks All! Peace

I dont have a magical butter machine but have been using a sous vide setup and sometimes a pressure cooker setup to do the same thing. Looking at the butter machine I think the parameters should be very similar.

In the pressure cooker setup I'd put the butter, ABV or fresh, and lecithin in a canning jar and run it in some water at full pressure for 1-2 hours - which equates to about 250F. The extraction worked great and the product definitely works but I then read something about thermal degradation of THC at these temperatures (after decarb) and started to think that it could be too much. But it does work and was my go-to process for a while.

Lately I have been doing an initial oven decarb before cooking at 180-190 in the sous vide. But I've been looking for better data both around decarb and degradation so I can dial in the best process possible. I'd like to be able to decarb as part of the cooking process, but I always wonder whether those old time-temperature decarb charts that everyone points to apply in a wet process (as opposed to the dry process where they were created).

If you do use a 220-250F setting with the magical butter machine you might want to try clarified butter instead (google clarified butter for a simple recipe). Otherwise you may accidentally create "brown butter" by browning the butter solids after the water boils off.

In terms of amount, I try to use as little butter/oil as possible, usually so I just cover the solids. I'm going for high concentration as well so I can make butter caramels. Not sure if thats feasible in the butter machine due to its design since there is a min/max fill line in the kettle.

Thanks! But I'm really looking for folks who have experience using the magical butter machine to post here. All other info is appreciated but is not conducive to finding an answer for better MB butter production. Please let's keep this thread open for experienced MB folks. Thanks!

The processes should be almost identical. All you are doing with the butter maker is doing an extraction at a constant butter/oil temperature, which is the same thing I am doing with my sous vide and pressure cooker setups. So mentioning that part should be conducive to better MB processes. The only differences are I dont have stirring/agitation built in and the magic butter maker isn't sealed. But I agree my setup doesn't answer your ratio question which is specific to the MB due to the min/max lines.

I made a tincture using my Magical Butter Maker. I used the tincture setting at 160 degrees. I used 20 grams of herb and 30 grams of ABV, and 32 ounces of veg glycerine. I did the decarb on 240 degrees in the oven for an hour before putting into the machine. I also used the Lecithin.

I had it cook for 8 hours. I had a total of 2 and 3/4 cups when finished. The straining took a while to complete. In my opinion I don't think it's strong enough.

I plan on making some gummy candies with it. I have used the tincture to make lemonade because it doesn't tastes very good to drink straight. I've used 2 tablespoon per glass. You can't even taste the tincture that way.

I had previously made coconut oil with just ABV for the one hour. I used the tincture setting at 160 degrees. Way too weak. I may put more coconut oil with it and more herb or ABV and try it again. I just received my Sunflower Lecithin, because that's what they are telling folks to use now. Make sure you keep updated with their recipe. They keep changing things on us. Heres a pic of a glass of lemonade with the 2 tablespoons of tincture.[IMG]

Hey cool stuff! Nice to see some MB folks responding- I'm going to put my weak butter (1oz 1lbs butter @160) back in the MB with the original sludge and run it for an hour at 220. I will report back on whether or not the potency has increased.

I got a MB2 a couple of weeks ago, and during my first extraction, I ran the 1 hour oil cycle twice. I've learned a few things from using the machine, but I am still unsure as to why the oil cycle is so short. Prior to the MB2, I would simmer my coconut oil most of the day in a crock pot, while my everclear infusions took only 20 minutes. Now with the MB2, it's reversed and the alcohol extraction takes 4x longer than oil.

So, I am wondering if anyone runs the 2-hour butter cycle or 4-hour tincture cycle when making canna-oil. Would there be any downside to doing so?

I make cannabutter weekly, and have done so for 40 years
My old technique is crockpot/water/8 to 12 hours.
The machine was cool and fun for me for first few times, but I began to notice a certain element of the medicated feeling that was not present.
To test this out, I made two pounds of butter... one traditionally, and one in the MB2.
    Same meds, in same proportions.
I shared the caramels I made with a dozen patients.
It was a unanimous vote that the traditionally made butter was much more potent.
The butter made traditionally was clarified in the process as well.... something that would have to be done in a separate step using MB
After using the machine for a month, I have sold it, and am back to my 40 year old method.
While the experimenting was fun, the benefits I found to using the machine...
(time and utensils to clean), were not worth the reduction in potency that I noticed from the lengthier all day process.

I found the same exact thing to be true for all tinctures.
    Patients here assisted in testing.
Traditionally made tinctures were more medicating.
Everclear based tinctures, take me two days, while Glycerin tinctures take me 4 weeks.

I did find one area that the MB shined in.
It's oil reductions seemed more effective than my oven method... which takes about the same time.
I found the MB olive oil and coconut oil to be better tasting and superior to my
    oven cooking oil methods.

I made butter for the first time a few days ago using the Magical Butter Maker. I ground the cannabis up and declared in the oven. I found that the potency isn't as high as I want it to be. I was able go get some product for a reduced amount and good quality. It was Strawberry cough and i tried some in the Solo. I used 28 grams of top shelf Strawberry Cough and 10 grams of ABV and 2 cups butter, 4 sticks.

I made brownies. Also made sure the oven was at 290 degrees, just cooked it longer. I eventually ate 4 large brownies and felt nothing. Today I'm going to try the brownies again. Having to eat anymore than 2 is a bit much. I'll gain too much weight at this pace.

I may hold off making anymore products until I get more guidance. It's becoming too expensive. I would be better off buying my butter from the dispensary at this price. $20 for a cup of cannabutter is cheap compared to spending $100 of herb and feeling nothing.

I wish I knew the secret? Maybe Vito is right? It's not strong enough for some folks.

The secrets as far as I am concerned are:
    • NOT adding anything besides butter..... NOTHING (lecithen etc)
    • 28 grams of pure bud or 50 grams of trim
    • Water helps, add water... it will separate later
    • Never wring your mulch out with cheesecloth.. it absorbs butter. Just use a kitchen strainer(excess unstrained bud will sink to between the butter layer and the water layer in the fridge overnight)
    • ONLY use unsalted butter.

Salt is sodium. Sodium and potassium both find ways to make membranes and meniscus permeable.
During cooking this means that there is a chance some THC could flow back and forth from and into solution.
I have been argued with many times over the past 40+ years about this concept.
The proof is in the pudding here as well.
Salted butter does not medicate as well as unsalted butter.

if any of you are cardholding patients, and come through my area, I will share.
It can make a believer of you!
    My butter technique is here:
    http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/c...xperiences-for-cannabutter.14955/#post-648875
That is not to say that I will not try the MB again, if pressed for time, or in a pinch...
but strength is important to me.

Its been a week, or so since i posted my first batch!.
Ran out quickly, i accidentally burned a small batch of brownies  ** Its recommended that you DO NOT lick the brownie mix off bowl before baking..zzzzzz.:zzz:

Aslo i shared many treats with my close friends!!

Since then i have made more oil with some Sour Diesel!

First i pre grinned then decarbed the material. A half of botanical to 2 cups of coconut oil.
Set the the temp to 160, for 1 hour and of course MB2 did its job, very well.

So with this beautiful coconut oil, i decided to make a little something.. magical.:bang:

    Gummy THC

I used a recipe found on youtube, except i substituted the water and the juice (flavoring)
with my cann-oil. Mainly because water and oil don't mix very well. It tasted great even
doe it is mostly all cann-oil and flavored jello. They were potent little guys, and hit me
    in about 15-20 min!!!
.....lol i used Christmas jello molds, i could not find my cannabis molds:\

    Canna-oil peanut butter cups!

I also used a youtube recipe for these. I added oil to the peanut butter, about 1:1 ratio.
they came out tasting so delicious and VERY potent!
next time i will be also adding oil to the chocolate to increase potency in these !

    End product. 16oz. :haw:

I wanted to edit.. but I guess my phone does not have the feature at the moment..

For the gummy THC I forgot I actually did add less then a third of a cup of v8 fruit drink to the mix. That may ot may not be important.

i've been eating my coconut canna oil for a few months now. a couple times a week. i've always been high or was getting high while eating them.

this morning i woke up and decided to try them alone. so about 1.5 hours in i'm starting to smile and i took 2 hits off a bag of vape and stopped. 5 hours later, i thought, huh, i havne't had a bag in hours. what a beautiful high.

i take 4 caps and then 1/2 hour later one more cap. 5 caps at once hits me a bit too hard for my tastes so i space it out a bit.

i originally decided to get the mb2 and make caps because i wanted to cut down on my vaping/toking. for the last few months i toked just as much weather i ate the caps or not. i really had no idea how good the oil was.

now i know, and i'm going to do this a lot more often. 3 oz of bud to 2 cups of coconut oil. for me, that's the ticket. :)

by the way, you guys who vape past 200. is it that you have very little weed and want to squeeze everything out of it? tastes nasty past 210 and from what i've read over 200 you start burning nasty stuff which kind of defeats the purpose.

not goofing on you, just curious. i pretty much stay at 197 all day these days. 190 if i'm going somewhere.

i've read a bunch of different things about how long the oil might stay potent. i have it frozen and want to make some more if it will be ok for 2 years or more.

Yes.. I vape my glycerin tincture, and many of my friends do as well.
I use pure Vegetable Glycerin... and I do not add or change anything. I just put it in any ecig cartridge and it peroduces thick clouds... thicker than vaping flowers.
It tastes great and does medicate.... but it takes about a dozen hits to feel the effects nicely.
It is great however to extend a session....
Get vaped, then carry an ecig with Glycerin Tincture to maintain that high a bit longer!

I have always used salted butter and people love my edibles, if unsalted is more potent I am all for it!
I shall try it with my next batch.

I love people's medibles that are made with salted butter also.
    and salt preserves somewhat...
but unsalted has that dairy fresh essence/smell and flavor.
If you try Unsalted and find it more potent....
    but miss the flavors.....
simply add a pinch of salt to recipe once you use that butter.
