Gotta ask; Mac/OS X, PC/Windows, PC/Linux or other?

No flames/rants/fanboyism on my part; I switch major platforms regularly. I've got opinions as to which is better but I ain't voicing them....I'm just honestly curious as to what people use

Currently
-Macbook Pro
-iMac

Own but don't use
-Some kind of Performa Powermac I think
-Xerox 860 IPS (some real estate company was throwing this away when I was walking down a back lane about 17 years ago. I asked if I could have it and took it home. Got it working. Weighs about 200 pounds and uses 8 inch floppy disks. Hah!)
-Windows 98 PC
-some klnd of Palm Pilot

On the verge of buying; either an iMac or some kind of tablet computer (NOT the iPad).

iMac here. Been a mac user since 1986.

My very first Mac. 1MB of ram. No hard drive. Lots of disk swapping.

I own a Macbook Pro. The aluminum shell has a dimple in it from when I dropped my MZ on it... :(

My PC at my parents house had OSX installed (OSX86), but updating the operating system was a bitch so I just ended up installing Windows 7 on it a couple of years later.

I'm a mac fan.

I hate the fact that PC laptops are made out of plastic. It looks so cheap, and hell, it is an insulator for the heat!

iMac user here. I love mine. My first mac was a powerbook about 6 or so years ago. Have enjoyed my mac experience since.

I've had a slew of pc's. Every single one of them got a virus, even with the most current virus software. My last one crashed a few years ago and I made the switch to Mac. I have a Macbook Pro. I would never go back to a pc. :2c:

I've had Windows for a long time. I'm currently running Win 7, and everything is running fine. I am not against Macs, I've just never wanted to pay Mac prices. Sooner or later I'm going to have a Macbook though.

Professional Alpha Geek here.

4 PCs at home. Media unit for big LCD surfing, Wife's, Lappy, main PC runs Windows 7 64-Bit with VMWare and Virtual Box - run 5 different Windows platforms, 6 Linux distros, BSD and OSx86 (for shits and grins). I often have 3 different OSes running in virtual machines at a time.

Don't ask about work - way too much to list.

iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook, Dell Mini, retired Dell and Power Mac G5 towers, numerous operating systems and forks of operating systems. Too big a nerd.

Oh, and about 300 external hard drives. No kidding.

Apple ][ Forever! -- remember that slogan, about 6 months before the Mac came out?

i had an early Mac 128K -- i kept it 30 days and took it back -- it couldn't do shit, and took forever to do it.

i'm a PC ... i like to be able to build and fix my own stuff. Still running Win2K on two boxes, and the other 4 are WinXP. i have an HP TC1100 tablet which is a terrific TabletPC ... i do all my vape software development on it.

I'll be the odd one, I hate Macs! Never had a good experience with them. I've had at least three I can remember permanently die on me; one of those started smoking and burning inside. :o (Thankfully they were all work or school comps, never personally owned.) Never had a PC go bad on me so I know it wasn't me, ha ha. I think I have some Mac-specific radiation or something....

Right now I'm on a PC I built myself with Vista. I actually don't mind Vista now that I'm used to it. I would like an OS with a little more speed and less pretties eventually. As for the hardware, I'd be happy to upgrade parts and never actually replace the whole computer again. I love this thing. :D

I enjoy building my own computers as well as gaming so OSX is out. Could dual boot Windows on a Mac but when you can build a rig with faster hardware for less money it doesn't make sense to me. Still running XP pro mainly but 7 is really slick and flies on a core i7 with 8GB+ ram.

What I really like about Apple is the marketing, hard to think of another company that's established such powerful branding. They've convinced the world that Macs are something other than a PC (Personal Computer) and get away with calling 90% of computer users idiots. Microsoft's ad campaigns are pretty terrible in comparison.

Yeah i like building, upgrading, overclocking and customizing PCs WAY too much to ever own a mac. Most of the time I've checked, you can buy/build a PC with 2x the performance of a mac thats the same prices. I've never understood the appeal of apples over-priced products, especially when you can get something that does more for less. I guess the interface might be easier on ppl w/o much experience with technology now days, but really, who ISN'T familiar with the average windows environment now days anyways?

As far as windows getting more infections than macs, that's a given. It's like someone from a small town with the population of a couple thousand ppl boasting that they have less murders than a bigger city - there's less of everything! Anyways, I havent had a virus on any of my PCs in 5-10 years. If anyone who's been having trouble with infections were to ask for my advice:

-Do a fresh windows install

-Stop using internet explorer (unless you have XP, in which case you have to use it to get windows updates, but for nothing else)

-get Firefox, along with these add-ons: Ad-block, Web of Trust, and (if you're a bit more tech savvy or want to be extra safe) No-Script - all of which you can find on the official firefox add-ons site. use firefox and ONLY firefox for browsing the web.. no IE, and NO CHROME!

-get NOD32 Antivirus from www.eset.com/store and install it. I think its like $30, but its THE best AV out there. I repair PCs at my job and I'm pretty familiar with almost all of them. Norton, McAfee, AVG, and crappy AVs like them do very poor jobs of protecting computers, but an awesome job of slowing them down and crashing them! NOD32 does the opposite, catches almost everything and uses almost no system resources.

-get Comodo - http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html. It comes bundled with an antivirus that i honestly havent given much of a try, but you can choose not to install it in favor of NOD32. What you'll get then is a pretty awesome firewall and also protection from a lot of other malicious programs and security threats. It might be a bit hard for a really noobish user to set up, but once you do, you'll be pretty much armor-clad :D If Comodo is too much for you, you could just use the firewall included with windows and maybe get a free spyware scanner like spybot and malwarebytes instead.

Not only do i use this setup on my PCs, but I also setup frequent problem customers with it. One guy used to bring his PC in every other month because he had no common sense with his browsing and believes everthing and falls for every ad that looks like a fake system message and stuff like that. I finally said enough with the insufficient free AVG that wasnt doing much to help him and then set up his PC the way i described above. I havent seen him in about a year lol. Which is fine by me because i get paid hourly either way, with or without his business.

It's not just the interface but for me, a very big appeal is that I've never had to worry about virus's and spyware and the like. I may someday, but for the past 25 years that I have been using macs, I have never had to use any anti-virus software of any kind and I've never got a virus. For me, that's a HUGE plus.

I just don't want to fiddle around with the hardware or the software, or futz around with anti-virus software, or worry about resources, or build computer systems. I just want to plug it in and have it work. For me, the iMac fits this bill to a tee. Not only that, but I really like the way it looks.

Like vapes, to each his own. For me, I'll stick to the simplicity and elegance of the hardware and OS of Apple. They've served me well for over two and half decades.

But the PC vs Apple debate has gone on forever and I can't being to tell ya how many debates that I have got into on this, but hey, to each their own for I'll never tell a PC Windows user that he has an inferior machine or OS. It would be like telling someone that uses a Volcano that he is using an inferior vape just because I like my PD, or visa versa.

So...........with that said.....................VIVA LA APPLE !!! :brow::lol:

Wow, where were you when I needed you. I could have saved a whole lot of money and time. I ran Firefox on my last pc, but my kids had downloaded so much music and videos, games, etc. that I was screwed. I probably used every one of the crappy AVs you mentioned. Oh well.

I agree with you lwein. I just want the thing to work. Since I no longer use my computer for work, it's strictly for personal use, I really enjoy the user friendliness of the Mac. But I would never get into it with a pc lover. It's like you said, to each their own.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. I really was curious, didn't want to open any cans or worms and appreciate the replies.

I use PC's at work (with Win XP; we have instrumentation that does not work with Vista or W7) unless I bring my Macbook, Macs at home and Macs at my g/f's house (I gave her a PC laptop in June/08, spilt beer on it in Oct/09 and then bought her a Macbook in Nov/09). I virtualize WinXP for a few low requirement Windows games.

No Linux love?

thanks

Tom

My first computer, a Sinclair. Basic language and a tape storage (cassette).

I've used Macs.

Currently running PCs. One Vista (Vista Sucks) and the others are XP. Like TDavie, I have hardware that only works with XP, a Keyboard/Synth workstation. Also a long time Flight Simulator user, so Windows is the platform I am stuck in.

Interesting about the spill. The Lenovo laptops have a drain for spills, routes the water (or whatever) away from the electronics.

Yeah, I can understand that what one man views as being a frustratingly... limited platform, another could find to be more convenient and ideal. I can see how ppl who aren't too interested in the technology and customization and games and other things that PCs offer would find macs nice i guess, it's just hard to view things that far removed from my own perspective lol.

I've also been involved in the PC/Mac battles before, and have hurled my share of insults at the company, it's products, operating system, and of course the end users. After I while i just accepted that other ppl can be just as stubborn and set in their ways as i can be, and it really accomplishes nothing even if i do manage to sway some opinions, I don't make any $ off either lol. Although, if any customer asks me for my advice i tell them to "Buy anything with windows - XP or 7. Steer clear of the Macs, at least if you want any technical support from us."

It's kinda like vapes. Some people like to get vapes with variable temp controls and digital readouts so that they can vape their bud in increasing 5 to 10 degree increments so that they can get the specific cannaboids that they want at any given time. Others could care less and just want a simple, non-variable temp vape so that they can just stick in a stem and vape away.

I don't see it as a right or wrong issue. Just different. And I view the Mac/PC debate the same way.
