I'm going to be in New York in a few days (first time ever in america)
I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some nice places to get food. I'm open minded :).

Just have munchies at the moment and thinking about what i'd get in New York to eat haha.

Tell me what you're looking for and i'll tell you my favorites. Price range would be helpful too and what part of town you're staying and if you're just looking for places near there.

I'm going to be staying about 20 minutes away from
6th Ave, New York.

As i said i'm really open minded and interested to try good food NYC has to offer.
This can range from New York's 'best' pizza place all the way to more 'extravagant' things like the best chinese dumpling restaurants, or whatever. NYC seems to be a really buzzing place when it comes to food culture so yeah as i said i'm really open minded when it comes to food. I enjoy pretty much all cultures (Except i'm not a major fan of Thai food for the most part).

I'm able to travel around that area, probably about an hour max i'd be willing to travel realistically.

That gives me absolutely no clue as to where you are .
OK, I think the best Pizza is John's on Bleecker
http://www.johnsbrickovenpizza.com/index.php Do not eat in any $1 pizza places or those 2 Brothers pizza places etc.

Best Pastrami -Katz's Deli http://katzsdelicatessen.com

Wo-Hops on Mott for Chinese http://wohopnyc.com/default.aspx

For a good Filet i like Old Homestead http://www.theoldhomesteadsteakhouse.com Or Smith & Wollensky's http://www.smithandwollenskynyc.com gave you one on each side of town;)

I don't like Brother Jimmy's, i prefer Mighty Quinn's http://mightyquinnsbbq.com/index.html

Magnolia Bakery is overrated .
If you're up near W72 St go to Grey's Papaya and get a hot dog.
For Italian if i'm uptown with friends i go to Carmine's http://www.carminesnyc.combut that's with at least 2 or more. Downtown i like Gaetanan's on Greenwich http://www.gaetanasnyc.com or Ballato's On Houston no website. If you're looking for more upscale places wanna spend lots of $$ just let me know. :D

You are a god among men. thank you so much for the detailed list. Sorry about being vague in regards to my location (due to the nature of this forum i thought it'd better be safe then sorry). I'm 20 minutes away from specifically 375A 6th Ave
New York if that helps more haha.

I'd take his word over mine haha
I was just a tourist.

Wish I had gone to Katz's Deli though. I remember hearing about it from many people.

I always make sure I go to Keens Steakhouse for their mutton chops when in NYC. Not cheap, but worth twice what they charge. Gotta get the chop, it's unreal.

If anyone has any other opinions i'm still happy to hear them :) thanks everyone.

MGG,
Go to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn for the best pizza ever. There's also a new joint next door to Grimaldi's called Juliana's, which is owned by the original owner of Grimaldi's (he sold Grimaldi's a few years ago, but it's still bomb). I haven't had a chance to try the new place yet since it opened after I moved to California, but I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

If you want a really good burger, check out Shake Shack. There are multiple locations throughout the city.

For amazing ice cream, check out Van Leeuwen or Big Gay Ice Cream, both in West Village.

For incredible breakfast, check out Clinton St. Baking Company on the Lower East Side.

Enjoy NYC. There's really nothing else like it. :)

Have a good trip.

Unrelated to food but it seems everyone coming to nyc from abroad always asks about a department store. Check this place right near the World Trade Center: http://www.c21stores.com/location-Downtown

If you're up for something unique and like mixed cocktails... First order a hot dog here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/crif-dogs-new-york And watch for the phone booth, if you're feeling curious enter the booth and close the door. Fair warning you'll want to be dressed decently
