I am assuming I can just put the bushing on top of the top ring and seat both at the same time, or do I have to do one at a time?

The pipe you are talking about is the "bushing" in your explanation right? I looked up bushing and I got a picture of another tool.

I know I sound like a idiot.

I love having a limited edition zap, even if she does not live forever.

Seat both(or three ) at the same time. The pipe I am talking about is the center tube in the heatport that you put the vapor stem in for hot air. Never tap on that(center tube) in any way.
Bushing is usually something round with a big hole in the center. A piece of pipe can be a bushing. A deep mechanic socket can be a bushing. Bushing also has other definitions I'm sure. I have used a deep mechanic socket of different sizes many times to drive in or out bearings, fix U joints, etc. Also will tighten a Zap top ring/heatport. 11/16" I believe fits the Zap.
You do not sound like an idiot at all ob. Just someone who maybe does not do much mechanical stuff. Just a normal person. The questions help me clarify the process.

Holy moly!!!! That Zap is a beauty ob, a stunner, there is so many colors in that piece I know its hard to show its true beauty with a camera.

Wow, say what, whats this, who's that?? The family is growing Vito, nice to meet Walnetta.

Vito you inspired me. I picked up a similar erlenmeyer-bottom piece, and boy does the Zap love it.

It really shows how well the heat exchanger does it's job even under long pulls.

Thanks! I know there were so many photos. I was trying to capture the blues that are in the wood and was not able to as well as I wanted. That wood was originally from you right?

I was and am very excited to have her as part of my collection.

I do think a walnut might have to be part of my collection at some point soon........

Thats right ob, the Mahoe was from me, I have one more big chunk thats been sitting in my bunk for a while, I need to do something with it.....

How do you like the vapor from that species? Do you have another besides the Mahoe? I got a beautiful walnut for my cuz, really liked the vapor from the walnut, the Mahoe is a softer wood, it ran a little hotter, vapor was mo hearty, if you feel me.

ed,
I have three. I own a two myrtlezaps and a mahoezap. I would like a walnut just for the looks. I know that the walnut will run cooler because of the density (from what I have read) and yes, I am guessing that the mahoe being a softer wood would run hotter.

ob, I don't know that I would agree that the walnut runs cooler. My Walnita runs the same or a tad warmer that both my myrtle Zaps. It really depends on the density of each piece of wood.

like I said, that was from what I had read since I do not own one..........yet :brow:

That was just a generalization from what little I know about wood densities. Little being the key word.

but good to know. I am not one of those people who thinks these devices do not run hot enough anyway. I have never felt the need to put a koozie on one. sp?

oh my christ i'm sweating and swearing like a whore in church trying to use this tite kit. I'm sure my neighbors are enjoying my colorful display of language. At any rate, I'm trying to do this without snap ring pliers and am only managing to injure myself and gouge the shit out of the top of my zap. I guess I should just get some snap ring pliers before I heave the entire apparatus against the wall in fury. As an able bodied human being of above average intelligence, I feel this is something I should be able to achieve. Failing at what seems to be simple shit is always a recipe for fury. I know neanderthals can do this sort of stuff, so I should be able to as well.

In the meantime, I've just used the bushing to tighten the original snap ring without adding any additional rings and it seems to have fixed the rattle for now.

Sorry for the rant. Had to vent somewhere. OB, have any luck with yours? I could use some tips I guess. Or just some snap ring pliers?

Cheers,

My tip for those snap rings if you don't have the proper tool is to to bend the tips on some needle nose pliers so that the ring doesn't fly off when apply some force to it. That is how I have managed without the ideal tool before and it worked quite well. Not as good as the real thing but a solution if you have some cheap needle nose pliers that you don't mind moding

hey everyone, just ordered my zap today and i had a couple Q's for other zap owners (especially long-time owners). Having used a zap before, i'm already sold on their initial quality and awesomeness of usage, but, as always, i'm concerned with the longevity of the unit itself, especially after skimming through some of the recent charred wood/rattle comments.

So i'm wondering if ppl can report how long they've owned their zap, whether it's had said problems, whether it has been run 24/7 or not, and what type of wood. I always left my wdz plugged in 24/7 so that its always ready to go when i need it to be, and havent had any problems with it, but its only like 8 months old. Im also assuming that because the cherry zap i'm awaiting will run (from what i've read) hotter than walnut, that the "charring" or whatever that causes the looseness will therefor happen more rapidly?

I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to unplug the zap at night, or whenever there will be like 6+ hours without being used, or if going from cold to hot and hot to cold every day will actually put more stress on the wood to the point where thats not really worthwhile to do?

A final question: are there images available of the parts/innards of the zaps? I'm always curious as to whats inside things and how they're assembled, and would really like to get a visualization of the airpath within the zap. my main question is whether or not the air flows over exposed wood surface, or whether it is entirely contained in a metal housing inside the wood or what. I'm pretty sure that its the later of the the two, like the PD which i have seen the innards of, but yeah im still curious as to whether there are pics or not.

:peace:

*edit* i also wanted to ask about the screen in the heat exchanger port and whether its replaceable or not. I liked to vape qwiso goo-tipped stems in my wdz, and sometimes i would leave the stem in to let the goo heat up well and sometimes it would stick to the screen that i put in the opening. it wasnt a big deal cause i could just pluck it out and clean it and put it back in or replace it, but im wondering if it might be more troublesome if i managed to gunk up the one in the zap. i suppose i could just keep the zap upsidedown while its loaded with goo to help avoid this...

Welcome to Zapville steiner!

I've owned my Zaps for almost 1 1/2 years now. I have three. Two of them have developed a rattle, which can only be heard when they are not on. My personal feeling is that constantly changing the temp on these vapes is more detrimental than leaving them on since the wood expands each time it is heated, and contracts each time it cools. I tend to leave mine on. But Rick might have something different to say about that.

Holding the Zap horizontally would be the best for vaping goo, again IMO. Better safe than sorry. Either that or "sandwich" it between two layers of herb.

As far as the insides of the Zap, I don't think Rick has ever posted a picture of the inside "works", although he has gone into great detail describing it. You might want to get with him about that and also the heat port screen replacement.

Hope you enjoy your new vape. :D

Welcome, Steiner.

To address a few of your questions...

I've had my Walnut zap for about 9 months and leave it on 24/7 unless I'm going away or something, but then the thing usually comes with me. While mine has developed the rattle after about 9 months, it's quickly been remedied with the kit I got from Rick (who makes the zap). From the reading I've done on the subject, it seems that its better to leave the zap on than to constantly plug and unplug, because, as others have mentioned, the wood continually contracting and expanding seems like it would be worse for it than just a constant temperature. This is, of course, just from the limited research I've done on the subject on this site, so I could be wrong.

Rick has been a pleasure to deal with, and I am extremely pleased about my decision to get the zap. Hell, if the thing failed every year, I'd probably still order a new one each year...it conserves so much in comparison to combustion and even other vaporizers that I feel like it has paid for itself easily within the first month or so even (depending on your rate of consumption of course!)

As far as consumption of qwiso with the zap, its not something I've tried, so I can't speak to it directly, though it doesn't seem like to best idea to chance gunkin up your heatport, but, hey, you bought the thing so do as you please. At any rate, enjoy the new zap and welcome to the club!

Cheers,
mudstar

hahaha I'm right there with you man. Fortunately I didn't leave too much damage on my Woodeez, and was able to get the ring in with only a few tries, but there is a nice gouge from the snap ring still that seemed unaviodable. I just used some #0000 grade steel wool and doused the thing with "wax", "polish", or "butter" depending on what you like to call it. Hopefully it helps but I feel your pain.

I have to thank Rick for providing this tite kit, even for us WDZ and PD folks. The shipping was super fast, and Rick even wrote some extra hand written instructions on the backside of the printed instructions that helped clear some things up. I can definitely see why you have such a loyal following, Rick.

steiner666,
I have had a zap for about a year and four months. Actually I have three of them.

One of the three developed a rattle and that is only because it was a prototype (sort of) that rick was not going to sell. It was a very special really soft wood, that he knew would eventually develop this problem.

My other two have performed flawlessly. If they ever did develop this issue, it is pretty easily fixed (if you are not mechanically stupid like me)

The screen does not come out as far as I know. If you are going to try to vape hash, you should as mom said, sandwich it between two layers of herb. Personally I do not think the wood vapes are the best for hash anyway. I would suggest maybe a different device if you want to do that. It will gum up the screen either in the vape or in the tube.

You will not deal with a better person than Rick. He provides outstanding customer service and communicates well. He also stands by his product. He is and has been a pleasure to deal with.

You are also joining a family. Every one who owns these devices is extremely supportive and willing to help if you should need it.

Just do yourself and Mom and I a favor and do not start a contest to see who can own more of these devices. It will not be good for any of us. :) Its bad enough that I have to compete with her....

oh yea, At first I was worried about leaving one plugged in all the time. I worried about fire etc. I got over that quickly. I like the convenience of having one plugged in all the time. I only unplug when I go out of town for long periods. Even then it is kind of a bummer, because then you come home and want to use it and cant for a while. Leave it plugged in.

steiner, on occasion, I have vaped wand hash out of my Zap without using herb. It works fine, but really gunks up the stem. If you don't mind cleaning your stems regularly, no biggee. You probably know this already though, having had a WDZ. ;)

Ive had my Zap a little over a year now with no problems what so ever, no rattles. I always leave it on 24/7 and have never turned it off except to apply some wax 2-3 X week. I too have vaped some hash and Ive set aside one standard stock nylon stem that is only used for this. I as others put the hash in between some herb as in a sandwich. This technique seems to keep the screens reasonably clean. If you do it this way the hash never touches either screen. This stem is used only occasionally as I dont do the hash maybe once a month. I keep my other 4 stems for herb only.

ok cool, thanks for all of your responses. I'm assuming that even if/when the zap does develop a rattle, it shouldnt effect the functionality of the vape overall, am i right? and the dual layer herbscreening sounds like a good idea, ive done it before in the HA. I think that if anything i'll try to get the goo closer to the stems screen so that if anything gets gunked up it will be the easily replaceable screen instead of the one in the zap itself. I love vaping isogoo in log vapes, IME, even if i load a little bit in an almost entirely vaped stem i can get between 1-2 dozen nice hits :brow:

but yeah, i can't wait til i get my zap :D i'm impatient as hell, especially when its something i really really want :p

hello Family!
Sorry for being away for so long. Lots of things going on in Zapville and at Howling Hills Farm. We sell a few special items to the Chefs at the CDA Resort and Beverlys Restaurant at the top of the Resort. http://www.cdaresort.com/ Sales are picking up every week and the necessary extra work takes us away from Zapville and FC. So happy to see others help with questions from FC folks.
Rattles, rattles. Tite this way or that. Hassles that good folks put up with but should be designed out of the product if the businessperson wants to keep the train going at a good pace.
The Zap train is moving along well. I got the word from The Master Flow there may be a new car on the train with some special cargo. Cargo related to little bugs here or there and eliminating or minimizing them in the future without pesticides.
We are folks that like our scene and do not want to change much as it is working so well. When it comes to Zapville though, change is a bit more important than in our personal lives. Trying to survive in the business world often requires change.
So anyone care to venture a guess whats on the Zap train? No official contest here for sure but that does not mean we cannot send out a reward or two or three if we are so inclined.
I have dropped a few hints in the last month or two. No more for now other than to say I have a phone call to make today different than the ones made over the last few weeks to the same person.
