When Christmass arrives i'll need to recommend a butane lighter to a wooden VaporGenie owner. I've read that flint lighters generate toxic dust (cerium, neodymium, samarium and lanthanium) so it seems to me a piezo-electric lighter would be in order. Bee wax hemp wick is considered only as an alternative, in case this person might happen to be intolerant to butane lighter use.

Ideally, the lighter should have a cover to protect it against particles as he would keep it in a pocket.

I really like the Z-Torch Zippo butane-inserts myself. You can find the torch as well as the candle flame version on ebay for around 6 or 7 euro's. They often come with a cheap (no understatement) housing as well for just a few bucks more if he doesn't have a Zippo already to put the insert in. The gas-tank isn't to large on these though.

I also still have one 1967 Ronson Varaflame I may want to get rid of if he's in to vintage stuff, but that's flint-ignited. Huge tank on that one.

just got mine today on this advice (plus i love DREMEL). had to pay an arm and a leg and ship from the uk.
less blast than my BonJour "XL" w/ fuel gauge or my Rosle kitchen torch, however all the attachments, including the extension for heat-shrinking tubes (great for filling omi carts, i bet!) and soldering iron tip make it worth it. the electric ignition is way stronger than any of the previously mentioned torches. it's kinda right below the big boys, but much bigger than a micro or pocket torch. will try to remember to update in a few months as to durability.

It's possibly the most beautiful lighter I've seen including many $500+ solid gold ones, the craftsmanship is unbelievable on it and it's truly unique as well.

Unfortunately, I'm an all around vaper/smoker, so I alternate between bong/pipe/joint/blunt/vape very regularly (don't worry, it's about 80%+ vape, I'm health-conscious). Flip top lighters just don't work very well with bongs and pipes, and I don't smoke joints and blunts enough to justify carrying the lighter around with me, so right now it's sitting unfueled with a few of my other collectible lighters :(

It's so classy I considered starting smoking cigarettes at one point just so I'd be able to use it more often :p but I gave up on that idea and for now I'm just sticking with my BICs, they work for everything ;)

So can anyone explain to me what the deal is with the igniters on cheap torches?

It still clicks, and makes a spark, but won't actually light the tane?
What's up with that?
What's changed?

I've had it happen with cheap, small torches in the past, and it happened to my ($25) chefs torch I got off amazon.
I still use it, I just need to keep another smaller torch around as a starter flame...

What kind of tane are you using? 0 impurity or nromal one?
Sometimes poor quality tane in known to fuck up ignition with a "deposit" on all the ignitors...A little brush and some pressurized air for computers in there, sometimes does a great job in giving a 2nd life to your torch!

For all of my lighters with an enclosed tane chamber, I use the same stuff I use for BHO.
I think it's less than 30ppm impurities.

For the chefs torch, I'm using cans of tane made for camping stoves. There's def impurities in there, it's got tha nasty smell to it.

For the cost of it, I think I'll stick to the cheap tane for the big torch (it's about 1/8 the price of the good tane)
I just thought it was strange, I thought it was the spark that lights the tane, my one still sparks, but won't ignite the tane.
The weirdest bit, is if I've been torching for say a minute or so, it will actually ignite itself if I turn it off and try to ignite it.
I let it cool for a minute or so, and it won't ignite again. :shrug:
I'll have to get some compressed air through it and see if that helps :)

I think it might have something do with the 'carburettor' and venturi business going on in there. I've noticed that if you soften the flame (restrict the air getting in, if it has that function) then it becomes really hard to catch alight from the piezoelectric ignition. For some reason more pure gas (less air mixed) coming out the end seems to be harder to ignite (even with another flame on hand)- I don't think the venturi effect works quite right and it doesn't come out of the nozzle properly. So I reckon it could just be a bit of gunk/dirt in there perhaps restricting how much/how air can be mixed in. But I'm just speculating really...

It doesn't have a carb adjustment that I can see, but it would make sense that restricting it on a torch that does have one would make things harder to burn.
If 9 seasons of Mythbusters has taught me anything, it that fuels need a certain ratio of air to fuel in order to burn properly(or explode if that's what you're going for:lol:)
I would think they would try to design it to have the right mix at the nozzle :shrug:

Aside from it not igniting, which is most probably from the cheap fuel, it's a really nice torch.
And when it did ignite, it was first time, every time.

Im looking for a new butane torch and looking for something less culinary and industrial and more stoner. Like with some design to it. Maybe a weedy design or something dab related. Ive seen a few of these on youtube and what not but they are hard to find.

I bought two of these shortly after reading this post (almost 2 years ago). They're both as good as new. Not a single issue. To adjust the flame, take a small flat screwdriver and stick it into the refill hole area, which has a couple notches to accommodate it. Clockwise will reduce the flame, counterclockwise to increase it. I've read you're supposed to turn the flame down before refilling - maybe it's a myth, but i've always done it and never had a problem. No harm no foul. I'm only spelling this stuff out because the packaging doesn't, and i didn't know it when i bought the lighters.

Do you guys think I could use a triple flame pocket lighter from vector to dab on the go? Do you think it could heat a quartz nail and if so how may times on one tank? Any info or info on other portable dab torch ideas would be great.

I picked up a Vector Nitro for home use - but fucking loud and big when out travelling. I've gone through half a dozen cheap jet lighters now, can anyone recommend a decent 3 jet lighter that will work for more than a week?

Preferably something with a bit of insulation around it, so it doesn't get so damn hot like the metal ones all seem to do. Thanks in advance, dabs have changed my life! :)
