But, I'd love to have a dedicated group of officers dealing with the homeless issue where I live. Here, the guys with the signs get a little aggressive sometimes when they're not having a good day. You feel like you're treating them less than human if you avoid them and you risk your safety and health by being around them and where they...hang out. I don't know how it's going in the rest of the country, but I am in one of the epicenters of the issue (You've seen footage from right here on the news.) and this shit has to stop. I don't know the fix and hope the "housing first" theory of wraparound services with free shelter we're throwing money at helps.

It's interesting to me the emoji used of club hitting as you hear more and more on Nextdoor (A den of villainy unmatched by few social media outlets.) about people wanting to go out and take back some areas around here. Groups of roving people looking for other people and...well, "take back".

I'll paraphrase as I can't easily find the real quote, but it is to the effect of, the police are not so much to protect the law abiding from the criminal, but to protect the criminal from the mob.

Me? I'll save my fuck you for those who don't understand the point of Anatole France' quote from "The Red Lilly" and accept that group may include the cops in the photo. May.

I have lived and worked in three cities known for a large homeless population.

I was walking to the subway station and had a homeless woman try to hug and kiss me out of nowhere. She never said a word as I was walking toward her and she was walking toward me... but when we were almost face to face she threw her arms open, puckered up and tried to get friendly. She smelled so bad from urine that I gagged even though I was able to avoid the hug/kiss.

I was walking with my family in a well known tourist town and a large homeless contingent had taken over the middle of the most touristy area for weeks basically shutting down all the mom and pop businesses. Panhandling wasn't the issue. It was relieving themselves, fighting, blocking doorways and cussing at strangers that was the issue. The businesses had asked the police to help and were told the homeless had a right to be there. The police weren't going to get involved for something as minor as public indecency. The laws broken had to be beyond harassment and public urination. A dog owned by a homeless man was tied to a bench and was snarling at us as we passed and the bench was right in front of an eatery. I read follow-up articles as time passed and we stopped going to that town on the weekends. The area was known for weekend free concerts, art walks and the town itself was known for being progressive. The area became something to avoid. The arguments between those who advocated for the homeless and those who wanted relief from being accosted or had businesses affected were equally compelling and resulted in stagnation. According to the articles there was plenty of services available for homeless people that included counseling and places to eat and sleep but many of the homeless had mental problems and addiction issues and wouldn't avail themselves. What should these mom and pop business do when surrounded by people who have mental issues and have to clean up feces when they open up.

I've read articles about the sorry state of some of those services/shelters and can understand why they may be avoided.

I believe there are services available for the homeless who want help getting back on their feet and many are safe but there are homeless people who just want to be free and left on their own. I think everyone should be allowed to pursue their freedom as long as they don't endanger or trample the rights of others.

It's a thorny issue with many sides to it........
