I have to agree with @Hedonismbot when it comes to the Iris the SR-71 white rod is the best.

@Caligula although we did stop the production, we might do a run for the SR74 but with this comes risks, people always wanting the clouds fucking up the Hercules connection points and then blaming the company for faulty products.

It is going to be inevitable that someone uses a sr71 white rod on a sr 74 hercules without the Iris then come here or other boards and complain how we wont warranty items that are consumable.

Why not just increase the amp limit on the hot springs?

Why not just increase the amp limit on the hot springs?

To many variables. What happens when someone decides to use the Core at 8.4v on the Hercules SR 74. Plus the contact in the rod sleeve is super small to increase the spring means we have to make it bigger and thicker if im not mistaken. It wont work and cant fit.

Do you have old new stock of 71 rods?

You mean sr 71 white rods that will work on the SR74 center sleeve?

Understood. I'll be interested in your results.

FYI, if your SR-71 white rod is 1.5 ohms then 5.7v puts you at 22 watts. If your SR-74 white rod is 2.3 ohms then you would need 7.0v to get the same 22 watts in this config.
Thanks for helping me avoid doing math!

I think I prefer somewhere in the mid to low 6's if I had better oil. I just got a horrible batch that has too much chlorophyll in it and it tastes horrible. The herc at 5.7V somehow makes the taste more manageable... I think 6.6-6.8 is perfect for shatter though

I just thought I'd test it out for people stuck with the 74. But if they're gonna make rods for the iris I guess I don't need to

To answer your question, assuming the SR74 has the black rod installed, the only thing that should happen is that the Core have its over-current protection kick in and automatically adjust voltage in order to reach its maximum of 40w output. This would just result in burnt oil and leaking, but it should not damage the herc or persei.

Personally I don't think the SR74 is worth it - too many points of failure (screw top cap is the worst offender, then the hot springs). The greatest thing to come out of that is the Ti oil coils, which I believe are the key to getting the 3.7v black rod working with nice clouds of vapor. I couldn't achieve the same result with the SS coils and black rod.
I understand you were responding to customer complaints, but sometimes no matter what you do the customer will find something else to complain about.

As for the leaking, what would happen if you put the 3 tiny air holes on the lower sides of the chamber? It would negate the AAF washer, but who uses that anyways?

I'm probably wrong, but i'm just throwing out ideas.

well not sure if we will do the rods for the iris.

@thevaf

The Airflow is the issue with the holes being on the side. We have hercs with side air ports want to guess how they perform?

As for the washer it does work and reduce the oxygen content and increase the vapor production.

Now for the hot springs, they are rated at 5 amps and nothing we can do to increase that. We believe 5 amps is ample enough power to get to where it needs to be.

Your help is greatly appreciated! I am encouraged to read variously that the SR74 seems better for using the black rod. I am hoping to use the herc primarily at 3.7v. :D I don't mind having to feather my button presses and/or doling cooldown hits...

I am guessing I should put the persei/herc back into my pocket right-side-up to prevent leakage too? Does the PTFE sleeve for the herc stop it from leaking?

You don't really need to feather the button or do cool downs with the black rod. The only time I had it leak with a black rod was when I over loaded it...feathering is more of a 71 white rod thing to prevent burnt oil and leaking...

And no you want to store it horizontally. When I'm out it's almost second nature to unscrew the herc and put it back in my pocket now .

Ptfe shield is mainly to not burn yourself. It's completely separate from the actual chambers so has nothing to do with leaking or not leaking

Perfect! Cheers for the help man!

I am feeling well and truly prepared for the arrival of my new toy! Hey can you smell the 'weediness' of someone else's exhaled shatter vapor in the air? I have a poor sense of smell and can't tell!

Yes there is some smell, but it dissipates very quickly. If you cloud in someone's face they will smell something. Smell is a huge issue with Mrs. DieHard. Terrible migraines from the smell of combustion and other triggers. She never complains about my endless vaping.

The Persei has been a total disaster for me thus far. I thought I'd gotten a good deal picking up a used cjrome persei for $90. The previous owner suggested I pick up an ohm meter, which arrived the same time as the herc sr-74 . I've been reading this thread for weeks but am still clue less. Never in my life have I felt so stupid, spent so much money, and had nothing to show for it.

I can't believe I paid almost $100.00 for a cartridge that doesn't even include a basic diagram of what part is what or any kind of instructions. (herc sr-74)

I watched some you tube videos took the thing apart put it back together. put it on the ohm meter and it comes back a 1. I do this several more times with the same result.

I file a ticket...

I take it apart and put it together a 5th time and the ohm meter reads 1.86 HEY! it's something other than a 1.

So next I hook it to the chrome persei. push the button just a second, and it wont turn off.

I remove the battery but its to late. . it won't turn off no matter which battery I put in it. The button does not appear to be stuck it just doesn't turn off.

by the time I got the charger extra batterys and the herc sr-74 I spent well over $200.00 on this crap.
and now it's just trash. all because they couldn't be bothered to provide me with even the most basic of instructions on how to use the HERC sr74

No one has ever called me stupid before now. The Persei appears to be one of the biggest and most expensive mistakes I've made in a long long time.

  1. Who called you stupid?
  2. Did you actually call or email W9 regarding getting help before attempting things yourself and/or giving up?
  3. Did you bother asking questions in a thread such as this before attempting things yourself and/or giving up?

I bought one also, it is intimidating a bit, and I'm not consistent with it, seems to take a lot of fine tuning, and what works for one won't work for another, they're expensive and so far I like it, although I still have many questions about it, I just keep reading, how long should a new kiss cart last at 7.4 v?

Are you referring to the Persei itself or the Hercules cart attachment?

As for the KISS carts, I only use the 3.7v units, so I am not sure. They tend not to burn out as often as the 7.4s (Ive owned 4 and never had one burn out). Id think as long as you dont ride the power button (short 2-3 second bursts then one second off then back on again, etc) it should last a good while. Especially if you always keep the wires wet with oil/wax. Its when it dries out when people run into problems.

The Herc mostly...just been running one screen/coil for wax, going to add the other after I clean it, haven't had any leaks, but I think Ive been loading kinda light...seems I have a long warmup to get things going...also, the Persei, a couple times now, when I pick it up..unlocked...and hit the button I'll get three flashes, so I go through the lock unlock sequence to get it going,,,what is with the 3 flashes?

Hello FC, first time post here. Been reading this forum for a while. Nice to finally decide to join FC. Anyways been reading complaints about the herc/persei combo these last couple of days. I own a persei with a herc attachment. I also own a kiss ti cart. The Persei/herc combo is a powerful device. I will admit the persei/herc is very different from anything out in the market currently. New technology and design tends to be not user friendly. Frustration can come quick when wanting to medicate and device malfunctions. I see most problems are from user error. However there is mysterious problems I have seen but few. This type of technology is something you can't just jump in and smash the power button. I HIGHLY recommend anyone looking to purchase a persei/herc to READ READ READ READ!!!!!! Yes I know it sucks that no intructions are included but they can be found on w9tech website. Once you have read this forum and the intructions 10 times. Ask yourself, "do I feel confident taking this apart and putting it back together with minimal help from the manual"?. If yes go ahead and buy !!! If NO read more. I feel the persei/herc brings more problems to users because of the features and small parts. But once you have a idea how this device is you really start to appreciate the brand and features. You also realize how simple the persei/herc is. If you fix a car, bicycle, electrical, lawn mower, ect. there is little to zero leArning curve. Just be informed how to use it and READ the intructions provided online w9tech. If you are not a hands on type of person you might have a problem or two along the wAy. For the folks that are not hands on. READ MORE!!!!! Become familiar with the parts inside and become familiar with your persei before loading anything in the cartridge. I know patience sucks. But at the end you will hAVE A AWESOME PERSEI and Hercules. Don't rush anything And triple check everything. Anyone ever mess with RC cars or motorsports in general?? Same learning curve if you are not a hands on person. I also recommend you don't buy used from a unknown person. People break things learning. Some people destroy things refusing to be patient and sell the problems off to a victim. I also recommend to buy the newest Persei version with the short proof top. Especially if you have no ohm meter and have no knowledge how electrical works. The old tops will blow if you don't check ur cartridge with ohm tester. To avoid this just buy the newest persei with a short-proof head. Also BE CAREFUL!!!!! I see many people don't understand the concept of the battery adjusting tool to adjust height. This is a good thing but many people dislike this. Again read the manual. Make sure ur battery height is correct. Don't force the top on if ur battery is sticking out 1/2 inch. Also CAREFUL with screwing cartridges so damn tight. Naturally everyone wants to screw in the cartridge all the way till it stops. This is wrong!!!!! The top will get damaged or u will get shorts. Screw it very gently with your fingers. When you feel resistance STOP!!! A gap is normal by design from the cart to the persei top. If you have no gap, BE AWARE! Damage can occur and you will have problems. I see too many people screwing in carts like they are tightening a iron threaded pipe

I agree with some of what Fred said... personally I do find it slightly annoying to have spent over 30 hours reading hundreds of pages of this thread to learn how to use my pricey gear- if more info from this was easily searchable on Vapepedia that would go a ways, so would instructions in the box for the SR71, 74, okeanos.

When I bought my sr74 there was no manual in the box OR online so that was frustrating- did my best with the sr71 manual... a problem that no longer exist.. Garys YouTube videos were a great help too.

I had an Okeanos a month and a half and never got it to work. got it soon after it was released, had leaking and clogging problems. Contacted UP tech they were going to send me center post o rings. Developed my own hot iso soak to clean the tube due to non stop clogging. Never got those o rings from UP tech, went and bought my own. No better. At this point I noticed oil on the plate just above the coil... I decided to clay the gap between them (the top of the KISS cart and the plate that the center post starts from) and it was tiny. I didnt know how to fix that gap or if it had anything to do with causing the tube to clog.

2 weeks later @Sleepin in CA came out with his clog fix videos and I tried one, two, three, and finally four o rings to increase the bottom chamber size. Although this let me draw bubbles a bit longer and never fully clog, I still never got vapor into the water chamber or my lungs. It all went in to the center tube... I gave up and took my Okeanos back to where I bought it. I am happy to hear new parts are on the way, I might be interested in trying again, depending on how much it will cost to get the $100 unit working finally.

A this point I would just assume whatever UP Tech releases next won't come with a manual either. This is the price I choose to pay time and time again from a company I feel is innovating. I know they aren't releasing super polished, tested by a hundred people for 6 month devices, and I'm okay with that. The customer support I've recieved so far has made up for that, to an extent.

@SamuraiSam All products released from now on will get a manual. We now have a 3d cad designer on board and is doing all things related to manuals. As you can see we got many manuals updated and online. The previous person was a little slow and had other commitments.

@Lou Taylor May i ask where you purchased your Persei from and when?
