The Zion has many variables that effect hit size, volume, temp, density, flavor, and duration including voltage set, speed and strength of draw, duration of draw, button control, ambient temp, strain, moisture content, grind, age, accoutrements, etc.
You have heard/read a lot of variety of opinions on performance method and results (btw, remarkably all positive) from just 10 beta testers and a few others including the developers. I think it is fair to say that Zion will be a little different for everyone.
In keeping with that I will say that the way I use Zion (most of the time) stirring is essential. As it is usually through glass and water I am probably pushing more air faster than when using the stem which makes hot spots more likely. The harder I hit it the more this is true. It isn't a problem, of course, due to...stirring.
For my own personal taste I like to stir even on a casual hit through the stem as the first hit tends to clump the goods and I like hitting them loose, tho that is more preference than need.
I guess my point is that this is a difficult vape to describe "the way it works" because there are so many ways, and alternatives to get where you are trying to go.
So, I won't say there is NO way to do it wrong, but I will say that the worst way to do it wrong would be to not do it. You really need one of these...
