Again, orientation we were told by RBT and used during testing was holding in your left hand curve in palm thumb on trigger, 12 o clock would be zero. Since apparently everyone measures that different depending how they like to hold it, again I say lets just use percentage as a more universal power quantification for everyone...

That is the way he's holding it. If I hold mine that way, I can't reach 12. 0% is at 1, and 100% is at 9.

Do you know about the bird?
I use left my index finger to press the button, so 0% is 6 o'clock for me. Dial goes to about 2 o'clock when holding it that way. I like my thumb to be securing one side of the device and three other fingers holding the opposite side when in use. So I guess powerwise I'm using it at around 75% of max capacity that way.

75% is about where I like to be. Maybe 80%. Gives you the best of both worlds I believe.

It is funny how many different ways there are to look at the same thing. During the beta run I don't think Ryan was completely consistent on the orientation of the heater so I just started with the knob all the way off and called that 6:00 on the clock dial and put a dot there. Than I put a dot at 180 degrees from that and called that 12:00. Fully on is then between 2:00 and maybe 2:30. My normal set and leave setting is between 11:00 and 11:30. I rarely change it unless I want to temp step for some reason or get flavor hits.

I think clock position is easier to understand than percentage as no calculations need to be made, and everyone knows the clock dial.

But the starting points were inconsistent at first. You could have one Zion 6:00 position be an angle a second Zion knob could not reach... and alternatively the max of the second would not be reachable by the first etc...

Also for me clock face makes sense when you have 360 degrees. Here we got around 245 degrees of freedom only. Anyway we are nit picking aren't we? :p

I agree, Kero, thats why I said this...

So, if fully off is 6:00, everyone is looking at the same clock. :p

And yes, we are picking nits. Fortunately I got good at that working with children in very poor neighborhoods. ;)

But ... I'm stubborn and don't want to change my perspective of the clock :(. But I agree. Percentages are universal but not perfectly accurate or simple here. Clocks take no thought but are subjectively perceived in this matter :/

Anyway .. I start on about 40% when temp stepping and finish on about 65%.

If I'm trying to do quick water sesh between games or something I'm normally right to 65-70% for some quick 2 rip bowl killers.

My dial goes from 8pm to 4am, with noon as the mid point. That's looking at it perpendicularly, over the top of the heater/stem stash section. Petty normal, until you get to the part where my dial is always at 4pm.

I like the way it vapes @4pm, but want some versatility with the dial or it's useless. Compared to the norm it seems inefficient, as it also seem to take longer to heat up than it should; so back for evaluation it goes.

To what do you compare it for the heatup time? The two I got are slower to heat than my Milaana and require more trigger time, at least at the setting I use.

I'm going with more like a 15 second preheat, but I can do the "start drawing very slowly" for flavor after about 10. My og milaana is supposedly one of the slower ones, more like 10 seconds than 15 though.

Yeah, i found it seemed to take longer than the Milaana too, but i think that makes sense, since Milaana is 'full on' as soon as you hit the trigger, whereas Zion seems to build heat (and build and build and...). This is offset, though, by being able to hit the trigger early on Zion to let the heat start building without fear of combustion (sometimes before i have even exhaled the previous hit).

With the power knob, rather than thinking of percentage or clock orientation, I found pointing the dial at the stem was around perfect setting for me. I can adjust up or down depending on mood, but found anywhere in this area as ideal and easy to remember.

I also find that the shape of the Zion leads me to use my left hand as the most comfortable way to hold. This is the only Vape i do this for, but surprisingly, I like it. Plus It frees up my dominant hand allowing me to do other things with my right hand while vaping (and that's not an invitation for the out-of-context thread...)

I have a hard time determining if I'm getting an adequate number of stems per charge. Last night I temp stepped for a bit and after 1 bowl my batteries were down enough to put the batteries at under 1/3. I think anyways, none of my chargers have a digital readout.

I thought I was getting more efficiency with the Zion when I first bought it. Maybe it's all in my head, but even with these newer batteries I'm not getting what I would expect.

But what do you expect exactly?

As soon as I got a Milaana to compare, I stated clearly here that given my usage pattern, I was not getting twice the battery life with the Zion.

Longer sessions not at full throttle mean a slower extraction and more battery drain. Plus even if it's very efficient some energy is wasted in the DC/DC conversion stage.

Now have a piece of cake !! (If it is cake on the counter behind you lol ) it's well deserved.

So when the dial is at 0% is the Zion truly off? More importantly if I turn it to 0%, put it in a bag and the button gets accidentally pressed for a while will the Zion overheat?

squidmark,

Nope, Ryan tried to chose a sensible value for the lowest power but it's still active.

Button pressed inside your bag = destroyed device. Happened to quite a few Milaanas already... Or well, destroyed... only the wood, the heater will still work in the end.

Good to know. Thanks!

I must admit, I view this as a significant design flaw/oversight. Everything about this device screams portable. Not necessarily put it in your pocket portable, but throw in your bag portable. I've got everything I need in once nice container, stem, stirring stick and herb, except I need to put it in a case or take out the batteries to make sure it doesn't overheat in my bag.

Don't get me wrong, the Zion is an otherwise outstanding vape. Unfortunate when you make something this awesome the flaws tend to stand out more.

Out of curiosity, do you know why Ryan decided not to allow you to turn it off without taking out the batteries?

It does have reverse polarity protection so switching one (doesnt need to be both @KeroZen ? As you seem to be our resident battery guru) around will stop it from heating. I know this is not as quick as an off switch but at least its all still self contained.

Yep, spot on, thanks!
Just flip one batt and you're good to go :)
