Hey guys, everythings okay. I'm starting to feel better now and got to work on something that I've been meaning to prototype while glue was drying.

My biggest issues with the dynastash have always been the very narrow diameter of 14mm and the lack of space for carrying a lighter. So I designed this prototype this morning that would address both points. The left side is for the vapcap and has a smaller space, where the right side is much deeper to accommodate lighters.

The top edge of the two swing outs have magnets to retain them while they're in your bag or pocket. It takes some serious shaking or force to pop the side out and the design naturally wants to stay closed. There's a small indent on either side at the the top that lets your finger easily open the stash.

Let me know what you guys think!

PS: I'll add a cap magnet eventually.

That's exactly how it should work! Nice job bud, glad to see you're still innovating. Do the VapCaps rattle at all? Maybe if the chambers were lined with some felt or sponge?

Also glad to see you are feeling better.

I found out that rattling is a problem pretty much right after I posted:doh:. That's what prototyping is for though.

I think I already have a solution for the vapcap rattling but the lighter might be a different story. I'll post something soon!

Here's my solution. I added a small retaining hole at the bottom and added a wood spring on the inside with a piece of foam to take up any slack. A bonus is that the vapcap doesn't fall out of the stash even when opened sideways. I plan to move the foam and spring down a bit so that there's no chance of a hot tip touching it.

The lighter side will have to be a user customized fit, but I can provide some strips of foam that can easily be added and removed.

I like how you're thinking man. Foam should work nicely for the lighter section.

Glad to see you are using a minimal amount for the VC side. I've found in the past most foams absorb odour which could make the unit less stealthy.

I think you're onto something here.

I'd prefer to eliminate it on the vapcap side since the hot cap + foam is just waiting to make a melted mess. I think I'll find an all wood solution.

I do too.

Is that a Nirvana lighter?
It certainly is!

Don't want to step on any toes but I have to say I don't like it @Winegums.

I appreciate the attempt at innovation but in my opinion this is an example of over engineering.

It doesn't look particularly pocketable or ergonomic, and is having a space for a lighter really that important? Lighters come in all different shapes and sizes and they don't really need to be kept contained like a hot vapcap or potent smelling herb.

What would be more useful, in my opinion, is a stash designed with shock absorbing properties (foam lined chamber) to accommodate a glass vial with a diameter wide enough that you can stick the VC tip in to fill and so you can stopper the internal glass vial to make it properly smell proof. Even better would be that design but made in a way that the herb chamber is hidden and can only be accessed if you know how; like an Asian secret box.

Or, if you really want to be on to a winner, a stash that sacrifices the herb side for a chamber that houses a 18650 battery; which can heat the walls of the chamber around the bottom of the vapcap side, so you could heat the vapcap in the stash!

However, kudos to your strive for innovation! This ones just not for me, but it may be for others.

This stash likely won't be the stash for you then, but I appreciate the feedback and will consider making some different models. Keep in mind it is only a prototype and I'll likely go through a few more versions before anything is sold.

I really didn't want to make something that was a copy of a Dynastash and I was aware when making it that it wouldn't be as pocketable. There's no getting around the extra physical size of some of my stems due to the outside profile required for 18mm stems, as well the wood case can only be made so thin. If I were to make a slim version it would be similar in thickness to a Dynastash,(~20mm?). The prototype is 127mm x 76mm x 27mm, so it's a little smaller than an original sony walkman.

The reason I wanted an lighter chamber over an herb chamber is that I already have Kannastor Pucks that I use for taking weed on the go. That said, I think I'll make another slightly longer prototype with Vapcap storage, an herb chamber and lighter chamber at some point. There's lots of possibilities for herb storage than I can play around with.

I think you'd be surprised at the ergonomics of opening and closing the stash. It's quite slick using two hands, since you're going to need the vapcap in one and the lighter in the other. There's no rotation, flipping, or dumping out required. The hinges at the bottom tilt out the lighter and the vapcap so that they are easily grasped with your thumb and middle finger, while your index finger opens the stash at the top. It was really awkward to open the stash with one hand for the instagram post.

Prototype 2 is now complete. Made primarily from Oak and a bit of Cherry.
eJyFCeJ.jpg

I made some changes to the dimensions and thicknesses of wood that I used to bring down the outside dimensions while increasing the storage capacity. The thickness is now 25mm versus 27.5mm on the original. It's surprising how much of a difference a few mm can make when working with small items.
L7Pb1F7.jpg

The second version has another 6mm of depth on the storage side and uses the interior space more efficiently. A bic lighter now looks like it could use some company.

crKTsHu.jpg

I also worked out a foam-less rattle solution for the Vapcap side that involved adding a small cradle, re-profiling the wood spring and rotating it 180. Now there is no chance of the hot tip ever melting anything inside the case.
lw8dybS.jpg

I'm thinking that I can still improve on this design with space for herb and still have room for a lighter. All that said I'm very pleased with how it came out.

I love this evolution of containment and I hope to see the perfect wooden case soon, I have faith in you! Craftsmanship looks very nice.
Thanks! I'm getting close now.
Yeh I'm sold, sign me up for one. Can I add it to my other order to save a little on shipping?
Yes! Saving on shipping is always good. I should have the design finalized soon, with space for herb as well. I have boro glass test tubes and stoppers on the way that should work perfectly.

Prototype 3 has been completed.

This one I made slimmer and will fit up to 15mm diameter stems. It came out to 20mm thick x 125mm long x 75mm wide.
pYUchPu.jpg

It's much easier to put into your pocket than the previous prototypes and can even fit a zippo size lighter on the storage side. If a slimmer stash is wanted I can always reduce the storage side or modify it to hold only a glass test tube with a stopper. I have 40 of them on order so that I can offer them as an option.
FZo8zGF.jpg

Here's a shot of all my attempts at reducing and eliminating the rattle caused by the vapcap. So far I'm happiest with the design in third prototype. I made two small V blocks to hold the mouth piece in place. I think the final version will have a design more like version two with the U shaped cradle on the door side and a V block on the case side.

Something else to note is the doubling of the magnets that I did to prototype two and designed into prototype three. This was a necessary change as the spring pressure would over come the strength of a single magnet. As a bonus I found out that two of these little N50 1/8" x 1/4" rod magnets are strong enough to remove the cap. I'd been puzzling over where to add a cap magnet so this discovery was fortuitous.

If you find yourself fond of items you can fidget with while you think, this is very satisfying. The click upon closing sides is addictive to hear and feel. It won't be long before I can start making these for sale.

Loving the chamfered edges of V3

You need a CNC mill so you can do custom engravings :brow:

I like this piece a lot, any chance of more like this one coming along?

Sorry for the long time between updates everyone! I've been busy building furniture and dealing with other things life has thrown at me. I've only just got back to my lathe yesterday and worked on refining some of my processes. It has been quite the challenge to work with Blackwood, Birch Burl and B20 Bronze due to disparate material properties. I'm very happy with the way this first 18mm for a custom order turned out and hopefully I'll have two more available for purchase soon.

I was hoping that I would have two of them for sale but the blackwood I have on hand is so prone to cracking that all of the ends fell in half. I also had two other custom laminated stems I'm making crack in half along the blackwood so I'm strongly considering that I never work with the material again. All I have to show from my attempts at making another BBB is this one that I made but haven't posted. I used cherry for the ends which is far less prone to splitting.
