Hey guys, I have a lid roughed out. No grooves or magnets yet.

Coming along nicely !!!

Got my latest shipment today! Winegums really outdid himself on these pieces; the chatoyance of the wood box is mesmerizing. It's light weight but sturdy and compact, perfect for tucking away on my desk. All the magnets are aligned perfectly so they attract the cap to the centre and the lid fits securely. I originally imagined a hinged lid but this flipping design is 100% better.

Sure can fit a lot of caps in there! Might need a second one though, my collection seems to be expanding at an alarming rate..

The steel lined, dyed green burl piece is probably my favourite out of them all; thrilled I was able to snag it. My favourite shades of green and I love the little orange streaks mixed into the burly goodness. Along with the shipment was a note explaining some tips for caring for the wood and some bonus matching green O-rings! They're going to look awesome. Probably wait until I break one to swap though

My current Winegums family. Thanks for all your excellent work man!

Had to look that word up, and now I know what it means I agree.

Looks like you've put the box underwater and taken the pictures.

@Winegums you've got some cracking pieces of wood, very nice.
Thanks!

I've only got one plank of this stuff and it's nothing short of magical. I think the best use of it is making small items like this. It would be wasted on stems and bodies as the figuring is too wide and the wood is too soft.

Is this the maple cherry box? It's beautiful. I may need to buy one when that wood comes back.

Whew! That was quite a marathon in the shop, but my prototype is done. I have come a long way from the drawing I did a few months back. I gave it a test drive and it hits like a champ! Over all I'm very happy with it besides it being a bit chunky, I'm sure that I can slim it down in quite a few areas to make the proportions better.

Hey,

Not sure what I'm looking at...could you please elaborate on the functionality of this innovation?

TIA

It allows you to remove the cap with the magnet in the lower half as well as extending the length of stem that can be made with my tiny lathe. I often find myself wanting to inspect my vapcap load mid session so I thought it would be handy to have a magnet built into a stem.

Edit:Another way it could increase functionality is if you had a VonG profile on the bottom half for use with glass and a longer stem for use in your hand.

My box arrived yesterday, absolutely gorgeous, alongside a dynastasher for scale.

And there's most of the family, winegums and otherwise:

The three in top left corner are my @phattpiggie stems, the left on the bottom is a walnut long stem from Ed that came with my wood scents, and the other five are my winegums collection. The one on the magnet is a cocobolo stem stock from dynavap, I like that one a lot also.

Nice box and collection @ArthurJ ! Love that maple. Looks like your lid has some extra stem grooves cut along the short side that mine didn't come with; I like seeing constant design improvements. Good idea including the stash for scale.

That stem second from the left on the bottom looks really cool, got stripes almost swirling down it. Is that one of Winegums steel lined stems?

Your lid was the prototype! I didn't think of doing a second set of grooves until I was testing out my router settings on some scrap wood. I ran the router on all the sides and didn't mind the way it looked when the grooves crossed over.

That's an Elm stem using the end grain rather than parallel grain. It makes for an oval shaped stem but it's really pretty.

I only just noticed how the ends of the cutouts on the cover pick up the shape of the mouthpiece. This can't have been an accident, can it?
I cannot say enough about this piece, absolutely gorgeous.
I feel really fortunate to have snagged it.

I'm hoping to get back on the lathe this week and create some new pieces. I've had a bunch of business to deal with outside of my wood working, but that is all past now and I can focus on making.

The long two part prototype piece failed so I have to go back to the drawing board with my design.
