Their style is drone doom... I listen much of the doom gentres mostly stoner doom ...

Hey weedemon, great selection! I've been listening to Symphony X, Tool/APC, Opeth (non-growling) for quite some time. I absolutely love "progressive" music. If you like Symphony X and Tool (especially their earlier stuff), you should check out the lighter genre of progressive metal and the heavier genre Extreme Progressive Metal. I'm not really into the crazier stuff, but here's some recommendations based on your post:

-Kamelot
-Riverside
-Blotted Science (you gotta listen to this! It's like symphonic instrumental dark metal)
-Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment (I'm sure you've heard of these guys)

Have you heard Symphony X's new album? I'm not too keen on the direction the band has taken as of late. It seems they're losing song complexity for broader appeal. Then again, my absolute favorite album is The Odyssey!

Lately I've been exploring progressive rock and blues, but metal will always have a special place in my heart. Especially Tool! Lateralus is such a beast of an album.

Got all the studio cd's by these bands. Favs include Ghosts of Perdition and In the Mist She Was Standing by Opeth and Mourning Palace by Dimmu.

Another good 'goth' type band is My Dying Bride and maybe Type O Negative.

But yeah I like metal and have for quite a while. Maiden is still tops in my mind.

Huge metal fan here, good choice with the Sonata Arctica. I think Tony is the best singer I have ever heard.

I really like Protest The Hero, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, First Signs of Frost. Galneryus is a neat Japanese metal band that has incredible musicians.

Those are just what I have been really into lately but I listen to all sorts of metal, it's a huge genre that covers so much variety. Of course I enjoy other forms of music but metal just seem to satisfy my musical ADD.

I mostly listen to metal, usually don't really like deathmetal tough unless it's on a party/festival with a good moshpit
I mostly listen to powermetal(sabaton, tr, helloween etc) and 'classic' metal(I like iron maiden a lot for example, especially when high)
I used to only listen to metal(and some rock, like AC/DC), also grew up with metal(if there was music on at home it was usually metal or the horrible dutch music my father listens too)
but recently I started listening more reggae too(only bob marley actually, at least what I have myself), I used to only like it wgen high but now I also like it sober

Haha Charlie I see where your coming from. Cream, Tull, Zappa (and don't forget Zeppelin!) were the original metal bands. I have much respect for those guys. That's more the type of "metal" I listen to versus today's version of metal.

The bands I listed aren't your prototypical metal bands. They focus more on intricate musical stylings and emotion rather then trying to melt the listener's face off. I guess they're lumped into the metal category because they play with a harder edge. I highly recommend you give them a shot! I'm also a huge fan of jazz/rock fusion.

EDIT: In a completely unrelated topic, does anybody find that listening to ANY music after vaping is amazing? I normally don't like rap, techno, country, etc., but I can rock out to those genres for hours after vaping. I don't know what it is, everything seems so sublime after a vape session

Obscura, Necrophagist, Amon Amarth, Mastodon, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Eluveitie, Six Feet Under, Tarot, Pavor, Brain Drill, Nile, etc... the list of metal I listen to could go on for a while. These aren't necessarily recommendations but in my humble opinion each band has it's charm. The genres cover all areas from Neo-classical technical death metal (Necrophagist) to prog. (Mastodon) and stoner doom (Electric Wizard/Sleep).
My musical career has strayed to the classical world but my heart will always be with metal. lol

appearance isn't that important IMO, I like manowar, discovered them when my mom once asked to download a manowar discography for her and since my musical taste is similar to my mom's I listened to it to see if I liked it, and I did, exactly that 'deep' sound that I like in metal but miss in most pop-music

same with deathstars, a friend once gave the name as tip, I looked it up and listened to it and liked it, even tough their appearance turned out ti be lidiculous when I once looked them up on youtube
but that doesn't stop me from listening to the music

not for e, music I like becomes better and music I am indfferent too(I can appreciate it on a party or as backgroundmusic but wouldn't usually listen to it myself) is also better, but music I hate get worse, like rap, I find that everything with rap immedoatly sounds horrible as seen as the rapvoice chimes in, as good or bad as the beat underneath it is, also with dubstep wich I kind of like, but most on parties, becomes horrible as soon as there's rap in it
I also hate the music we knew here in the netherlands as 'nederlandstalige music' or 'piratenmuziek' (dutch music r pirate music, the pirate doesn't mean pirates but it comes from illegal radiostations, wich are called piratestations here, that usualy broadcast this genre of music)
there are varrying degrees of horible-ness among this dutch music, the least worse is the dutch pop music, wich is very simple with lyrics that are easy to sing along
but the worst is wgat my father listens too sometimes, the kind that is broadcasted on the pirate stations, really slow and the theme is always some lost love or so

This is the very first time that I have ever heard of Cream and Tull being considered Metal Bands. I agree with Black Sabbath and Zeppelin, but Tull and Cream? Hmmmm.......They both never seemed that "heavy" to me. To me, most of Tulls stuff was way too melodic with too many changing riffs to be considered "metal" and although Cream used to jam a lot, especially in concert, it was more on the jazz/blues side of rock than "metal". At least that's my perception. While they both may have had a few "metalesque" tunes in their repertoire, I wouldn't consider them hard core metal bands in the least. I think Clapton, Ginger Baker and Ian Anderson with his flute would agree.

Haha its funny you mention that. I've never heard of Cream categorized as metal until my stepdad was complaining about eating at a restaurant with "heavy metal" playing in the background. I thought to myself, "What restaurant would play heavy metal (thinking of bands like Sabbath or Pantera)?" Then he said, "Yeah they were playing In A Gadda Da Vida by Cream or some shit"

Tull, Cream and Zappa I actually would not associate with metal. Tull was its own thing and I think their finest moments were with original guitar Mick Abrahams before he left to form Blodwyn Pig and Cream were definitive hard rock. Zappa was his own universe and he was as much "country" as he was "metal." He truly defied categorization to the extreme. I don't think we'll be seeing the likes of a Frank Zappa again any time soon. If you're not very familiar with Zappa, a few choice album suggestions in no particular order: Hot Rats, Weasels Ripped my Flesh, Burnt Weenie Sandwich, We're Only In It For the Money, Uncle Meat, 200 Motels, Absolutely Free, Shut Up 'n Play Your Guitar, Sleep Dirt.

Yup. There were just so much innovation going on and so many good bands at that time, that there were many that got lost in the fray.

The Animals were great. Moby Grape and Traffic are two bands during that era that never really took off commercially, but I loved them both. Neither metal though. A bit off topic.
