What vaporizer to get?

Hey,

I currently have the miniVAP, which delivers good hits, but doesn't fulfill some other needs of mine. That is, it has a too long heat-up time so I can't use it stealthily(going to the toilet for 5-10 minutes is not something stealthy to do ;))

What I'm looking for:
  • Portable(Doesn't need to be super small but needs to somehow fit in the pocket. I can live with it being a bit clunky in the pocket if I get strong hits as a tradeoff)
  • Potent(Since weed is expensive where I live, it should get the maximum out of even small amounts of weed)
  • Stealthy(Doesn't need to look stealthy, since I won't be using it somewhere where people will see it. However, it needs to deliver quick hits and needs to be able to shut off in the middle of the session if needed. Additionally, it should leave a smell that is weak enough for noone to raise suspicions. I'm willing to learn techniques for avoiding smell if needed)
  • Big temperature range(This is not a must but would be very cool since I would like to try other herbs than weed that have different boiling points. If possible I would like an analog temperature control or something similar that gives me lots of levels to choose from)
Price doesn't matter much to me. If I can get something that fulfills my needs better, I'm willing to pay a lot more for it than for something that has lots of tradeoffs.

The MFLB is unrivaled for its size and stealthiness, and it excels with tiny amounts of herb. It also heats instantly, and stops heating instantly. You'll need to learn some technique to use it properly and minimize smell, namely:
  • Make sure your bud is very very dry. If you can crumble it between your fingers, you're golden. Using a lot of moist bud in the launch box will lead to a larger amount of buildup in the wooden interior, making it much more smelly.
  • Grind very finely. The MFLB thrives on an extremely fine grind, perhaps more-so than most vapes. A salt like consistency is a good goal. A coffee grinder or the Magic-Flight Finishing Grinder will help get you there. You can also start vaping to dry it out as much as possible and then dump it in your hand, crumble it with your fingers, and load it again.
  • You need a light draw, and you need to shake the box to stir the load between hits, as all the heat comes from the bottom.
It might sound like a lot, but like I said, it's unbelievably tiny for a vape and IMO it's a very rewarding experience. It will work with the tiniest of loads, all the way down to a single grain if you want… It also comes with a lifetime warranty that covers everything, even user error.

Some don't like the launch box for the technique required and for the short vapor path which leads to harsher hits if you're going for lung busters. Some also don't like having to carry batteries, but that depends on your needs. 1 battery is good for 2 or maybe 3 bowls. Keep in mind that Magic-Flight very recently started shipping new and improved batteries that are much more powerful, and most reviews you'll find are based on the older batteries.

Yeah, the launch box is great for stealth. Everything NPOM says is true. Also, nstant heat up and cool down means you don't have that "pot" odor for 3 min while you wait for the device to heat up.

I also use the Tvape alot for stealth. You trade off instant heat for a more stealthy look. It smells a bit when heating up but not as bad as some and I feel comfortable using it in the open as long as there is ventilation.

The MFLB is definetely on my list of vapes to consider. I have two more questions on it though:

  • How do the hits compare to the miniVAP? From my experience, the miniVAP produces very potent hits. Can the MFLB keep pace with it?
  • Is it possible to use different temperature levels with the MFLB?
EDIT: nat3r wrote at the samt time as me, therfore I didn't see his post. Still wanting more opinions :)
EDIT2: As far as I can tell from a short search Pax isn't easily available outside of US/Canada.

PAX is stealthy in appearance. But that is where it stops. It reeks while it is heating up and needs weekly if not daily maintenance depending on use.

I would take the Pn Pro, Inhxp, MFLB and or Tvape over the PAX. Just my :2c:.

also the pax needs big loads and eats them quick - not what the op wanted at all...

and from the op's name i would guess he's in europe, where the pax is not warantied afaik.

i would suggest the lotus, it allows for 1 minute stealth sessions on the toilet, which can give full effect. it's pocketable and durable and not expensive and you can get it from verdampftnochmal.de ;)

I would have suggested the Lotus as well, as it is on my wish list. However, never seeing it I wasn't exactly sure how "pocketable" it was and the butane lighter is kind of a dead giveaway if you are sitting on the crapper. :)

Edit: When I say pocketable, I mean like the MFLB pocketable, ie: no loading, loaded and ready to puff at a 5 second notice.

Edit edit: Also, check out the Pn Pro thread to see if that is something you would like.

yeah, i guess it depends on the circumstances - the lighter doesn't make a lot of noise, but when it's completely silent it will be overheard and the sound is pretty easy to identify... oth in such situations the smell itself would be a no go anyways.

Why don't you let the MV preheat before you go to your medication mission ? When it's hot you load it and kill that in a couple minutes.

Why don't you let the MV preheat stashed in your bag or whatever, when it's hot you load and kill it in a couple minutes.

I think when preheating in my bag I would

  • Risk accidentally touching the buttons, therefore shutting it off or switching temp
  • Remember it too late until it is turned off already

For now, the MFLB is still at the top of my list, despite the missing temperature control. I'm looking forward to getting more information.

It's very feasible, I've done it plenty times. There is also the form factor, I understand you may want something smaller. You could check out the lotus

The reason it doesn't have temperature control is because it is an entirely manual vape. This means it has no electronics to maintain certain temperatures like the MV does. Once you overcome the learning curve, you can adjust your technique with any manually driven vape to vape more lightly or more deeply.

It's a bit like driving a car with a manual transmission and no cruise control. The MiniVAP and others (Solo, INH, Pinnacle, Ascent) set the temperature for you and hold it there. Manual vapes (MFLB, FlashVAPE, Palm, loose leaf Cera, flame-powered vapes like the Lotus, Hammer, Vapman) rely on user technique for temperature adjustment. I think you could argue that manual vapes give you more control just as much as you could argue that automatic vapes give you more control, depending on your perspective.

Like Roger mentioned, the Lotus could be another good option if you aren't averse to using a lighter. I don't have firsthand experience with it, but it will heat quickly and stop just as quickly due to its use of flame-power. It should also work well with small loads.

I used to be one of those MFLB doubters and had even retired mine at one point. Then I said to hell with it I bought the thing, learn how to use it.

After watching a couple videos and using a whip so I could see the vapor formation I can get as big or bigger clouds on my LB than any of my other portables.

In my experience with the Pax, you don't have to completely load the chamber to get good hits out of it. I usually load it about a third of the way and it performs great. I only use the lower two temps usually. However, it is on the more expensive side of the spectrum and the flavor goes south after the first session. The Lotus get a lot of praise and may be the way to go. I liked my Vaporgenie a lot as my first vape and it is similar to the Lotus so I don't think you'd be disappointed with that choice. I just wanted to add my experience with the Pax. Hope you find the right vape for you!!!

The whip helped me a lot too. Once you start to understand how your diaphragm affects vapor production, you can operate blind. I love the feeling of "becoming one" with a manual vape. :D

I'm surprised no one has suggested the cera. If you are willing to learn how to use it, it meets all of your needs. It is very efficient and once you learn how to use it you can tailor your session to your needs. When your in a bathroom take smaller hits and hold them in as long as possible, or if you can step outside, take a lung buster and let the breeze carry it away. Remember there is nothing stealthy about a giant cloud in a fluorescent lit bathroom that reeks of herb.

I'd throw in another vote for the Cera. It's portable, and does both flowers and wax with the different cartridges. Personally, I enjoy the flavor imparted with the essential oil cart. I've never really gotten the nasty, metallic burnt taste from the Cera's heater that I often get from wire/wick style pens. The only criteria not met is a variable temp.

While the temperature isn't adjustable the way the solo is where you can set it and forget it, it is controlled by button control and draw speed. If you master your technique it is infinitely adjustable.

The loose leaf Cera is another good choice, my personal favorite. It's manual like the other ones I mentioned, and has a bit of a larger learning curve than the others due to how well the mouthpiece cools the vapor, making it harder for a newbie to know exactly when they're hitting it right at first.

It's the opposite of the MFLB in that regard; the 'box has me wishing I had a water tool when I go for lung busters, while the Cera is always pleasing. It might be one of the best vapes for sneaking lung busters out of sight in that regard. While large amounts of vapor always leave smell behind, I think the Cera can deliver the most vapor without risking a need to cough. Another big plus is that it's immensely cleanable, and easily so. Unlike the launch box, you can make it smell fresh as new. If you're trying to sneak hits while out in the open though, it's a terrible choice due to its stunning white exterior.

It has a larger than average amount of air path restriction in its design, which a newcomer will mistake for needing to struggle to get a hit. The restriction actually means you need to pull more lightly rather than try and fight it and pull harder.

I vote for a Hammer, its quite underrated,
I don't put vapes in my pants pocket and personally find the warmth of the Hammer on my chest a pleasure.

I always load 0.1g or under, more common to 0.05-0.07g, with the adjustable dial you can quickly vape the load or enjoy the temp. You can even combust, don't know why you would but that just tells how high you can go. I've put waxes on cotton and have had milky results.

The Hammer itself doesn't smell, it leaves a butane smell in the air when and where it is being used but I don't find that to be too much of a negative and it doesn't linger long.

I normally use lock-on stems with a corks I have for my Underdog to keep the herb in

For now those three are on my list of vapes to consider:
  • Cera
  • MFLB
  • Solo

I unfortunately haven't been able to find out the temperature range of the Ascent and the Inhalater XP.

FYI: I try to avoid lighter-powered stuff because of having to take care of always having a full lighter and because I think inhaling buthane or other gases is quite unhealthy.

I understand not wanting to deal with lighters, but you can be assured that first of all there is no butane in the exhaust from a lighted flame, and second of all with the Vapman, Hammer, and Lotus the exhaust is separate from the intake so you aren't inhaling anything but ambient air and vapor.

The Solo is a good vape, but I don't think it would be ideal in your situation because of the glass stems (unless you invest in one of Ed's wood stems) and the fact that it doesn't heat up instantly and will continue to cook a little after you stop.

If the MV isn't right for how you want to use it, the solo won't be either. I'm not bashing the solo at all, I love mineand frequently recommend it, but it is a session style vape. It will take 3 minutes to heat up and doesn't cool down quickly. You will be looking at the same 5-10 minutes you would be with the MV
