What box mod are you using / recommending for on-demand convection 510 vapes?

No, totally don't. Best I can tell is the mod industry's focus is controlling max wattage for vaping vegetable glycerin w additives, and flower vapes are a weird little (fucking awesome) niche. So, it's kinda like buying a stereo, where every option is 100s of watts beyond my reasonable needs. And in that context, the DNA75 (which is phasing out and transitioning to the DNA75C, w color display and different button layout) is the most supported board/chip that totally covers our needs w/o going crazy far beyond them. Interface is simple, results are reliable, on-board charging is trusted, I am satisfied.

So, I've been searching for my favorite form factor - the DNA75 is in a ton of available mods, but it's too much curves and 3D-designed textures and huge logos for me, and there are small shops offering custom-CNC'd enclosures and mountings to match the board. Can you just get a $7 aluminum enclosure and attack it w a dremel? Yeah, but w my Splinter I'm down to one device, so I went a little far building the one mod for me.

First, I started w the copper, because pretty, and this was the best I could find. It's heavy & beautiful, more of a party vape than an EDC.

Then I went for as-much-in-as-little, and found the anodized green enclosure, which just barely fits a 26650.

Finally, I found the anodized gray enclosure (link in to red in that size, think they're out of gray as they update to DNA75C patterns), designed to snugly fit an 18650. I don't think I can get any smaller or more simple, it feels great in my hand, and it's just big enough in one dimension that I can put it down on the table and the Splinter is protected from scratches.

I feel done, now my only problem is I have too many mods.

Hey can some one post the list of mods compatible with the tubo firmware please. I know there is a picture of the list somewhere but I have been enjoying my Milaana a bit too much and can't find it/get my brain around the search function :freak:

Keep in mind that the interest in these "standardized" chipsets is that the mod functionalities will be always the same for a given chipset. All DNA75 mods will work the same for instance, down to how they manage the batteries etc. The only difference between mods is then the hardware around that, and it shouldn't be under looked of course, as it affects long term reliability etc, but it's mostly a matter of look and feel in the first place.

Find a design you like, read some reviews to check if they use quality components: 510 port, battery contacts, battery door, trigger button*, magnets, paint finish etc.. The body materials used affect mostly weight, for instance cast alloy mods tend to be heavier (ex: Smoant Knight v2) than those machined out of aluminium, some like the extra heft some dislike it, it's a matter of taste.

I'm going back a few pages to bug/ask @KeroZen and others following this thread a question:

Can we get a little roundup of the top current mods we think would be a happy pairing with the RBT Splinter? I got on Ryan's mailing list and I think the Splinter would be a small, fun way to explore on demand convection for dry herb. It's just that the mods are a forest and I can't get my bearings.

I'm reading up here and at ECF and Reddit... I think it's going to take some direction or advice from dry herb folks from FC to clear the air, as it were. The e-cig world is just so full of mods and starting with the DNA75 or DNA 75C it's easy to get lost in a plethora of higher wattage devices that aren't meant for a dry herb vaper like me. I like the idea of going in the Splinter direction as opposed to a Tubo rig, I just don't have a sense of what would work well with it.

I wouldn't mind a new "hand check" thread as inspiration from folks who vape herb or concentrates using box mods.

I've been shopping around and watching some reviews and learned some new things that I'll add here for posterity and in case anything needs correction or clarification from someone more knowledgeable.

1) The ecig vape scene is even more tacky and bro-y than you would have guessed.

2) There are just so many mods from so many half-baked manufacturers. I'm gonna operate on the assumption that DNA75C, DNA75, or DNA60 device would make a nice combo with a Splinter or iHeat and just shop based on brand reputation, size, and looks, with size being both a question of battery capacity and diameter at the 510 spot since the heaters I want to try are at least 25mm.

If I had one question for a dry herb box mod user it'd still be: what are a few affordable DNA mods to look at? It's easy to like some of the Lost Vape devices, but they all cost close to $150 and I feel like a rank amateur at mods with no interest in juice or traditional vaping would be better off starting with something less pimp and learning what's worth paying for.

My other observation is that the whole dry herb box mod setup is too modular to be portable. With a fat heater like the Splinter and a glass mouthpiece besides I'm kinda looking at something as bulky as the Solo II I have in the mail. If the convection experience is efficient and effective then I don't mind the redundancy. I should maybe consider three battery mods though since I'll just want a fat, balanced device that can hang out on the coffee table or the nightstand.

My final thought is whether the Splinter mod or the Solo II will get in the rotation once I take the plunge on an E-Nano. I'm sold on getting one and just sitting around for any 420 sales.

Im using a Wismec rolo 200s with my DC gen2, running arctic fox. But i heard of people on here successfully using the Tubo software to run with their splinter, which could be great with the DC, especially with cruise control. Anyone here tried it?

I also have a custom DNA200 box coming back to me, after being rehoused in a larger enclosure with a 5200mah lipo. I havn't got a Splinter yet, but it will go perfectly with that beast of a box!

My question is: I'm using an 80W Eleaf iPower Stick with a 5000mah lipo & I for the little I know, I'm getting great battery life. It's functions well. I only have this particular one because e-cig vaping didn't work out for me & I want to put it to use. It supposedly is upgradeable to the Arctic firmware, but I don't know how to upgrade it. I'm afraid to try for fear I'll fuck up the mod all together.

So after downloading the upgrade software & connecting my mod to my computer, what will happen? Will I get an online installation screen showing all settable values & then I'll select installation & it's overwrite the Eleaf firmware on my mod? As you see, I really don't no how this works & I'm not an adventurist. So it anyone can inform me, I'd be much obliged. :)

Oh, btw, the only reason I want to upgrade is so I can extend the auto-shutoff from 10 - 20 sec. although I could just push the fire button 2x. :p

@Summer Yep! That’s pretty much exactly how it works. I held off upgrading my pico for about a year because I had the same reservations about frying my device. It’s all good though and if something goes wrong with AF you can always just re-flash with Eleaf firmware.

Section 3 here has some screen shots of the installation process. Should give you a good idea of what to expect.

I'm using a Eleaf iPower Stick 80W mod w/ a 5000mah lipo battery. I'm gonna use it as long as it's working or holds a sufficient charge. When I get a new mod it won't be rectangular & won't have a tiny display & buttons. Things that make a difference to me: a centered 510, buttons that aren't too small, a fire button that doesn't feel plasticy & hollow; size; not too heavy; the look & layout of the display -- not too busy & doesn't use too much juice. The mods that appeals to me are (examples) the Smoant Cyclon & Charin mini; Wismec Ravage, Sinuous & the CB-80; Joyetech Espion & Espion Infinite; the Vaporesso Polar. All can be seen on elementvape.com. RBT says that a DNA mod is the top of the line, but he uses a Vaporesso Revenger which he says has served him well. He has dropped it many times & it keeps on ticking. supershredderdan uses a Evic mini with his Stempod. So you don't have to have the latest & greatest for a mod to be more than adequate.

If you don't have access to retail stores to check out mods 1st-hand, watch the reviews on youtube.

I ended up getting the wismecs dna250 for the splinter. Really liked the vapman steam engine mod just hard to find a us seller. I guess with being 3 batteries in the dna 250 I should buy new batteries. Is it still best to have a matching set for it? Any suggestion on a good batteries for this box mods? IMR still the best source?

Hey. Can someone clarify the advice about not regularly removing the device, be it the splinter or stempod, etc from the mod? Wondering is it because of wear and tear on the 510 connection?

Planning to use a couple of these options on just 1 mod, plus storing everything. Just wondering if it's ok to regularly disconnect them.

Edit: also reading about a heat sink? Thanks for helping a mod newb

I suggest buying a heatsink to avoid wear & tear on the 510 connection.

I have a Vaporesso Tarot Nano that claims to be a 75w device. It uses an Omni board rather than an Evolv DNA. Will that be sufficient for the Splinter or do I need something else?
