Virginia Governor Officially Signs Marijuana Decriminalization Bills Into Law

The governor of Virginia signed a pair of identical bills on Thursday (5/21/20) to decriminalize marijuana possession in the state.

The House voted 55 to 42 for the marijuana bill — a party-line split, though three Republicans opted not to vote. In the Senate, the 23-to-15 vote saw two Republicans join all the Democrats in supporting legalization. One Republican didn’t vote.

The governor has promised to sign! It's a done deal.

Don't be afraid to stop on by next time and bring your RIO will ya! We hold the fort down in NOVA. Love it here and I am so glad to see good things happening! I got arrested here in VA for minor Possession back in October of 2014 if any of you all recall. The officer and I joked/scoffed about how it would not be legal anytime soon. I wonder if I will be able to get that off my record now?

Really, I just can't wait to buy it locally at a store. That has been a dream of mine since I saw my first head shop at 13 years old.

I’m curious if other legal states have reciprocity with neighboring legal states? Will Virginians have access to the District’s legal happenings and be able to cross state lines? It kind of sounds like marijuana will become recreationally legal before the retail side is established. It also sounds like personal grow will legal?? ! Very exciting.

Marijuana becomes legal in Virginia on July 1. Here's what you need to know.

Beginning July 1st, adults in Virginia over the age of 21 can legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana without fear of criminal or civil penalties.

A sign staked in the median of North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond reads “Grow your four.” Just up the street, Happy Trees Agricultural Supply is helping people get ready to do just that. With rows of fertilizer, lights and other hydroponics supplies, Happy Trees co-founders Josiah Ickes and Christopher Haynie are preparing people to grow their own marijuana plants in their homes.

That’s because on Thursday, Virginia becomes the first state in the South where it’s legal for people 21 and older to possess and grow small amounts of pot.

Marijuana is now legal in Virginia. Advocates are already pushing for changes to the law.​

Lawmakers have set a 2024 target to begin retail sales to recreational users, a runway the legislation’s authors say is necessary to establish the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority, which will regulate the new market.

But some legalization advocates are hoping the General Assembly will agree to speed up that time frame.

It’s very quiet but generally people feel great about the changes or just don’t care. I’ve haven’t seen or heard of any anti protests.

Legal growing has been life changing. Off my first 4 plants I was able to pull over a pound out of a 4x4! I WONT be selling any of mine but the gifting market is strong. I love giving away weed for free. It’s my new feel good activity.

The medical dispensaries are a joke in VA but DC is not far from me and if necessary I could easily get what I need there on the legal market. I’m not sure about the black market in VA? At the moment, it’s looking like I may never have to go that route again.

Would you mind sharing your seed source?

The seed market is difficult in Virginia right now. It is illegal to buy or sell them and shipping is a no no too but anyone can give you seeds. I know people that have ordered from ILGM.com on numerous occasions and have had a good experience with great end results. Good luck.
