Vaporizing Tobacco (not e-cigs)

Member, Known Well
That's not right. Have you tried drying some of it out for a bit?

I typically get 15-20 solid hits before I flip, then I may get 10 or so more before it loses its flavor.

Also, when you say slightly crisp, that has me concerned. On Orange, it should be a very dark brown, even close to black at times. On Red, it will look combusted, but if you rub it in your hand, there will be no charcoal. Results may very from mine, but you will definitely notice a color shift to black.

I'd recommend that you post in this thread: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/pax-vaporizer-by-ploom.6223/

Be warned, the first thing that you will probably be asked is, "where did you get it? must be a counterfeit."

Hmm well so far, the results were very dismal.
I certainly got the taste of drum tobacco, however there was zero vapor, zero throat hit, zero nicotine.
I'm wondering whether it's because I either packed too much in there, or that I'm doing it wrong lol

I did an empty cook for the first use.
Then I filled it with drum original, put the temp to orange and waiting for it to go green, pulled on it for varying strengths and times with no results, put it up to red and still no results.
The tobacco is slightly crisp now.

I wonder how I can get better results lol any thoughts?

EDIT: I now have found that if I super pack it with drum I'll get about 2-3 draws out of it all, the first 2 are super warm and not very pleasant, however the 3rd was nice.
And then it's about an immediate nothingness after that 3rd draw haha
I wonder how much better pipe tobacco performs. It'll certainly taste nicer! Haha

Here's my take. Pack as much as you can and push it in more. Do not under pack. Drum original is ok, but not the strongest favor-wise. Another tip is, don't draw too frequently. You have to give it time to heat up. Third, draw somewhat slowly, like sipping from a straw. In the beginning, the draw is somewhat harsh on the throat if you are not used to it. Wait a little longer even after the light turns green.

Finally, I always use it on high heat. The Pax is not the hottest vaporizer around, and I just went straight to max setting. Never tried the lower heat setting.

Go with Pipe tobacco. That's what I have been using the Pax with. Shag and Drum are really 2nd best, at least for me. Finally, I reload quite often. Knowing that what I pack into the Pax is only about 1/2 a cigarette's worth of tobacco by weight.

About the possibility of a fake, 2 easy ways to check. The charger output voltage should be 9v not 5v, and the instruction booklet should be matte paper and not glossy (magazine like) paper.

Finally, I might have set your expectations a bit high. My comments were mostly addressed to vaporizing tobacco in general. The Pax is 1 of the ten so vaporizers I own, and taste wise, it ranks rather low. However, it is my daily driver due to portability and ease of use factors. It gets the job done while I walk from meeting to meeting.

Thanks guys,

Ok well I'm going to go buy some quality pipe tobacco that smells and tastes nice, and I'll see how that goes when I really really pack it in.
I was getting decent results the more I used I last night, I think it might have just been the drum factor that was not great. I never enjoyed smoking that anyway haha

Hmm so 15-20 solid hits, like, slow drags, but you feel the vape, I'll try at Max heat then.
And if the pipe tobacco doesn't work I'll try drying it out a little first :)

On the note of fake pax, I think I'm pretty safe.
The paint job on the pax is not streaked lines, the voltage output on the charger is 9v and the instruction manual is matte paper, just like normal paper (not glossy).

Mm and on the setting expectations too high, I think the design is perfect, I just need to experiment for the results. I am very certain, now that I've held it in my hands, that this is what I'd need to be able to use a vaporizer for tobacco, anything bigger is just too much.
You want to be able to just chuck it in your pocket, go out and have a vape, you don't want to set up a huge bowl/area like you would with the greens.

Oh and I think I used the wrong word by using 'crisp' sorry lol I was just describing the texture of it being dried out.

So what have we learnt?

Max temp.
Pack it in.
Let it heat up a lot.
Draw slow.
Buy quality.

I'll let you know how it goes,
Thanks guys,

Daijo.

I am also the weird guy who got into this site via wanting to vape tobacco lol
I have rather severe reactions to Ejuice, and overall I just don't find it anywhere near enjoyable.
I've tried different VG, PG, Nic levels, then tried different vendors and tanks and units.
They all give me the same side effects that actually induce more fear and worry than anything positive! Haha

I loved being a smoker, I actually enjoyed it, some of my best memories are accompanied by a cigarette however the last damn thing I ever want to do is go back to carcinogens after quitting.
So here I am coming to the conclusion that perhaps, vaporizing tobacco would give that same nicotine buzz and stimulation, plus the enjoyable habit of going out for a smoke, while avoiding the carcinogens of combustion.

So I suppose my questions would be aimed at Dompang or MPZ.

I want to vaporize tobacco, probably in something like the Arizer Solo.

I'd love to know how tobacco went for MPZ after getting his solo,
I'd also love to get that further elaboration from Dompang if you don't mind man :)

What tobacco should I go for, pipe tobacco? Any specific brands that may be obtainable in Australia?
And is the arizer solo the way to go? (It seems to be)
Also what's the feeling like? Is it comparable to the stimulation of a cigarette, yknow that mentally tingling, contemplation promoter haha which also alleviates some amount of stress/anxiety.
Or am I just dreaming and stuck with only with cigarettes for that nice buzz?

Thanks!

A year and a half ago I quit smoking cigarettes. I smoked for a good 30 years, since I was a child.

I didn't really want to quit, I enjoy smoking, just couldn't stand the idea of all of the carcinogens and coughing. Not to mention all of the poisonous additives in the tobacco, at least in my country.

E-cigarettes did it for me. I don't want to quit those. I enjoy my e-ciggs.

Before turning to e-ciggs, I tried vaping tobacco and for me, the taste was utterly disgusting.

With the e-ciggs you have a couple of choices. I buy all of my supplies from High Desert Vapes online (well most anyway). I like to use the CE5 BDC with a 1.8 ohm coil. I mix my own juice and flavors. With the CE5 I like to use PG USP mixed with organic NF approved plant extract flavorings. I can adjust the nicotine level to basically whatever I want/need. It is the most affordable way I know of.

If PG USP does not work for you, you can use PEG400 NF/USP. It is thicker, but works well. Of course, add the natural organic flavoring. High Desert Vapes has over 50 different flavors. Since PEG is thick, you don't have many choices of e-ciggs to use it in. I have noticed the KangerTech AeroTank Mini for a pen vape and the other AeroTanks function pretty well using the PEG.

The effects are different when using nicotine compared to cigarettes laced with 7000 chemicals. I don't get the funny tingly feeling in my face, but I can accidentally take too many draws to where I start feeling sick. Just a different tobacco buzz effect.

Edit: I would be talking about vaporizing tobacco, but in the USA clean natural tobacco is illegal, it has been completely banned. All of the tobacco I used to enjoy is no longer available here because they did not want to participate with the chemical additives. Busting open a marlboro cigarette and vaporizing the tobacco, I don't consider that vaporizing tobacco, I consider that to be vaporizing 7000 chemicals. It is not even genuine tobacco. I wish I could have tried vaporizing my favorite tobaccos before they were banned. The only reason why they were banned is that the companies would not use the additives the US wants put on the tobacco and grown in radiated soils.

Whoooooa wow, this is a HUGE difference.
Huge huge difference.
I just went out and bought 20g of Peter stokkebye navy flake for fricken $22 AUD.
(Note to self...wait until you're in Japan to use this every day as it's way too over priced in Australia)
But yeah, the results were huge.
I packed it tight, the first draw was unbearably hot, but after that it was perfect.
I'm still buzzing from it, bought myself some Sapporo Beer and damn, I'm happy ^_^

I tried a strange thing though, tell me if I did something horribly wrong, but I dropped 2 droplets of some flavored Ejuice 50/50 PG VG into the tobacco before turning it on, and it made all the difference in vapor production.
I actually couldn't finish it as it was too much!
A huge change from the 'wtf is this?' Drum tobacco.

@Grow Goddess , I wish I could do the same, I really enjoyed my ecig for the few months I used it, however tbh it raised more health fears than smoking itself for me.
I used a variety of kits and juices from crappy V2 premade ecig carts to eGo variable voltage, I even tried out a iTaste that looks similar to a Sonic screw driver, the vape was great however it severly dehydrated me, constant sore dry throat, it eventually started making me feel dizzy all the time and unable to concentrate the opposite of what cigarettes did for me.
I don't know whether I was allergic to PG or VG or whatever it was, but I developed a weird thing where I would get incredibly itchy at the bottom of my ribcages and eventually this weird 'inner' itch like I was itchy on my insides.

That was enough to make me say 'fuck that.'

If I could find somewhere where people had the same issues with me and found a resolution I'd probably stick to the ecigs, but those side effects...I couldn't vape without drinking half a ltr of water with every drag lol

That being said though, I think problem solved.
Use high quality pipe tobacco + vaporizer and you're good to go.

I suppose the only question to ask left would be,
What's some of your guys favorite pipe tobacco flavors, and why?
(Mainly aimed @dompang )

Don't give up yet on the e-ciggs. Maybe you do have an allergy to PG, not the first time I have heard of it. You do have another option, use PEG400 NF/USP as the base. Then add organic NF flavorings. The PEG does not cause throat burn like the PG can. Especially using the KangerTech AeroTank Mini. Using the organic flavoring has no throat burn. The problem with PEG is it is thick and not many vaporizers work well with it. Making your own juice, you can adjust the nicotine levels to what you want. Just nic juice that is mixed with VG then you can dilute it to whatever you want/need by adding PEG and VG.

I had the head buzzy problem also when I first started using the e-cigg juice. It eventually went away, it took a while though.

Also, I notice that the lower ohm coils for the CE5 BDC offers a different taste and causes head buzz, which I don't like. With the CE5 I prefer the 1.8 and 2.0 ohm coils.

Either way, vaping is the way to go whether it be tobacco or e-juice. For me, there is just no way I was going to continue smoking ciggs. If I was not able to be satisfied with my vape, I was planning to add a drop or two of nic juice to my coffee!

Edit: I used to really enjoy Peter Stokkebye tobaccos, my favorite was the Danish Export. I used to pay $22.47 US for a 300 gram can, now that same size can is over $100 US! I had to switch to that brand when Bali became unavailable. Stokkebye is still available here because it is soaked with chemicals. The old, old Drum tobacco was the best, at one time it was my favorite. Then they sold out to another company back in the 90's and started producing low grade crap. I have to admit, they are the best at making chemical tobacco. It is mostly ground up stems, paper and glue with a bunch of chemicals added and it really tastes like good clean tobacco, but it is not. Bali is pretty good and clean, see if that is available in your country it may taste better vaping. It has been over a year and a half of my not smoking tobacco. I must admit, I do miss rolling my own with premium hand rolling tobacco. I just couldn't take the coughing anymore.

Regarding which pipe tobacco I find best. That's a hard question. For me, the most important factor is accessibility, so I go for Davidoff stuff, they are everywhere. Easy to buy though somewhat expensive. However, cost is not much of a concern since one tin lasts so long.

I tend to like the fruity ones with a little sweet and sour taste to it. Another problem I have is that I don't vape pipe tobacco at home where I have access to bigger machines (American Bison, Red Bull Shag and Drum Original). Therefore, it takes a long while for me to finish vaping one tin of pipe tobacco. Finally, I find myself getting used to whatever taste about 1/3 way into each tin.

I am more a resource for the vaporizers than for tobacco.

I've been using my Pax with pipe tobacco for about a year now and my daily driver pipe tobacco is Macbaren vanilla cream. I probably like that one the most because it's nic seems pretty strong even on low where the flavor is preserved longer, I actually rarely ever go above low.

I've also tried Macbaren seven seas regular blend (decent),, Cao Cherry bomb (won't buy again), Cao Moontrance (will definitely buy again) and Cao Eileen 's Dream (probably won't buy again but maybe). I use to smoke Black & Mild's so I tried putting some of that tobacco in there and it was terrible.

Both Macbaren 's were $16 for 100g and the Cao's were $9 for 50g. The last 2 tins of the vanilla cream I ordered were 2 1/2 years old and they were prefect. When it's too fresh it's too moist.

My good buddy turned to me, being the only vaporist of our crowd, looking for a piece to vape pipe tobacco with and he will likely use for flowers as well. I will read up on this thread, but at first thought was a lotus or hammer. This piece needs to be inexpensive, as he is unsure if vaping is right for him.

so for those that have tried this, just how badly does it contaminate your vape? i want to try packing a spliff bowl in my cloud, but not if its going to mess up the taste of a weed hit. i think if i just thoroughly cleaned the elb and my glass after it wouldn't be an issue though.

i have an e cig but theres just something about them i don't like. i find they're vapour very heavy and chemically. for anyone thats tried both did you find vaping leaf felt a bit more "natural"?

If I vape one bowl of tobacco through my pax it takes a few bowls of flower to get rid of the taste, even after cleaning. Cleaning the cloud is a lot different then cleaning a Pax though. I ended up buying other portables for flower and using the pax only for tobacco. If you ever wanted a vape to not smell like weed (airport) then just vape a bowl of tobacco through it.

edit: For me vaping leaf feels way more natural. For me it was an acquired taste like beer, I didn't care for it at first, but, like beer, I got used to it and now would never go back to eciggs. Plus buying 3 1/2 ounce tin for $16 that lasts almost a month is much cheaper then the ejuice.

Is Nicotiana Rustica legal in the USA? I just saw this video last week and it looked interesting. Not that I would try it, I hate tobacco. Still it looked like fun and so some of you might like it.

Snappo, you really vape pipe tobacco? I have tried vaping regular smoking tobacco and it was awful. I like to have a pipe every once in a while and wrote off using (edit: vaping) pipe tobacco as being nasty before trying it.

Vaping Tabacco makes absolutely no sense and is pretty dangerous. When heating up tobacco to vaping-temperature many toxins are released and enter your body pretty fast. I'd rather smoke tobacco than vape it.

Really? Smoking is safer than vaping tobacco? Isn't vaping tobacco extract what e-cigs are all about?

IIRC don't you vape nicotine from tobacco at lower temperatures than THC from herb? Much lower than combustion.

Do you have any references on this 'safer to smoke' idea?

TIA

OF

Edit: So I did a Google search on the topic, seems we've got a long running thread on the topic:
http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/vaporizing-tobacco-not-e-cigs.29/

I skimmed it, nobody seems to hold the 'don't do it' side of things (several guys smoke and vape the same tobacco in fact.....flavored ones being popular). In fact Solo comes up as a potentially ideal tool for the job! In fact the PD was originally developed to deliver nicotine to a cigar smoker? Boy did we get lucky there.

Seems I was wrong about the temperature, not that it matters.

Hi everyone. I too am considering vaping straight tobacco. I have been doing a fair amount of reading on the subject and this is one of the best threads I have found. I would like to ask Daijo for an update on how things are going with the Pax. I am leaning towards getting the Solo due to battery life and it seeming like a safe device to use. I am a bit concerned that the temperature might be too high since I have read that tobacco should be vaped at around 125c / 257f. I am thinking perhaps the flowermate 5 pro might be a good possibility. It has the larger battery like the solo but is more portable with a compartment to put the mouthpiece. It has a clay oven so I presume would be conduction but quite even and has temperature control including lower temperatures. I have also watched a couple of videos that might be of interest to mention on this thread. There is one with a guy in Thailand who has adapted a ecig for vaping tobacco using a lighter. This is due to liquids being taken by customs. He talks about how a cheap device could be very helpful for many people in poorer countries who can not afford the expensive devices. For me too it would also be something that could be good when going off grid to be able to take a can of butane to keep vaping. There is another guy who has made a device using a glass tube and brass tube (could be a possible issue with lead contamination stainless steel might be better) He says that he is able to oxidise the vape at a higher temperature after it is released and favours this. Anyhow any updates and advice on choosing a device would be great as well as any info on whether feeling more healthy after switching to tobacco vapour.

The only gripe I can see with vaping tobacco is increased nicotine levels(cigarettes are roughly 2mg and your only get 10% via combustion). Anyone try smoking spliff bowls with a vaporizer using whole fronto leaf? I know people that have had seizures from dark leafs. So I'm guessing vaping the darker stuff would also prove dangerous.

Agh never thought of that. This is actually perfect it-makes sense the Nic would still hit through our glands. I definitely want to to try this after a nice session..:smug:
