This is my story. I am 19 years old, and I have had a genetic disease called Cystic Fibrosis since birth. Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that mutates the Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. This mutation causes both problems with the respiratory system, as well as, the pancreas. My lungs have been my biggest ailment throughout life. I have always been on numerous breathing treatment regiments and antibiotics for killing chronic lung infections.
Growing up, all my friends experimented with Marijuana and it was the one thing that I never got to experience with them. I tried brownies every now and then, but edibles just are not as practical as smoking. Whenever I tried edibles I did notice that my Cystic Fibrosis symptoms were greatly reduced. My lungs would open up more; allowing better oxygen intake, and I was able to decrease the amount of sputum congestion in my lungs.
Now after having this sort of experience with edibles, I decided to research Marijuana and Cystic Fibrosis and see why it could be helping me so much. What I discovered is, all humans have endogenous cannabinoids naturally synthesized by the CFTR pathway. Now with Cystic Fibrosis mutating my CFTR gene, I produce little to no cannabinoids at all. What is it that cannabinoids offer to the human body? Well cannabinoids are excellent for appetite stimulation, antiemetic, bronchodilating, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal and hypo-algesic effect.
With the bronchodilating and anit-inflammatory effects of cannabinoids, I realized this is what greatly reduced my Cystic Fibrosis symptoms. So in 2009, I learned about vaporizers. I met someone who one and decided to try and see how it affected my lungs. I knew it would be a great improvement over smoking, as it would not cause irritation or constriction of my lungs. The vaporizer was a great success. I bought my own dark coffee Vapor Brothers and went from there.
After having used the vaporizer daily along with my normally breathing treatments for roughly 3 months, I noticed a huge improvement in my symptoms. I honestly have never felt this well in my entire life. I went for my big check up with my doctor. I took a blood test and also did my pulmonary function test. First off the blood test was ground breaking for me, and my doctor was quite excited. The number of white blood cell irregularities in my immune system had decreased from 12.6% to 6 %; this is a huge improvement. 12.6% is quite high, and it means I had a large number of infections in me. Now it has dropped by twice that and is in a good stable zone. M pulmonary test was also great. It had stayed stable and actually did not go down or up from my previous visit. Another success is, when my doctor listened to my lungs with her stethoscope, she heard absolutely no crackling in my lungs; which means there is no over congestion of sputum in my lungs.
So this is my story of how Marijuana is the only medicine that has truly helped my well-being. I can now live easier, without chronic lung exacerbations; I also sleep better and my appetite has been up helping to keep my weight stable.
I thank anyone who had the patients to read all of this, I just wanted to have this story out there, so that people see how Marijuana is truly a legitimate medicine and it needs to be utilized. If medicinal marijuana were legal here in Georgia, I would see if I could have my doctors start research studies for the use of Marijuana and Cystic Fibrosis, but I guess I will just have to be patient. Please feel free to comment. Peace everyone. -Nick
