Vapman

This, it happened on mine and I'm fairly sure that's because I mistreated it a bit expecially when connecting/disconnecting Vapman to a water tool or cleaning the pan.
Ah yes, another thing that stresses the air tubes is letting sticky stuff cool down and glue the SS Filter to the pan, then forcefully prying it open.

Always heat the bowl some more until it loosens up and opens easily.
Already jokes, stories, dodgy rumours about cringy doings in Brighton AND breaking news relevant to my lifestyle. This IS the nicest thread :)
Glad you're back @NorVape.

We've missed your input here.

Excellent point! Think of it as a three legged stool. You can put a lot of weight on it, but twisting is asking for trouble. In this analogy you'd end up twisting the legs out of their sockets and sitting on the floor wondering where you can get another stool to finish the job.

Words to the wise, from the wise. I habitually clean and reload after the session so it's always warm, but.....

Thanks.

Hi mojo I was wondering;
My Ebony Vapman mouthpiece is slightly (2mm) longer than the original white pom mouthpiece. What I worried about was there would be stress on the pipes when in the Egg as there is definitely less rattling with the Ebony mouthpiece attached and that must be that there is less room in there?

Love your work by the way - have you done a Fibonacci (Golden Ratio) inspired piece?

I think you're worried about something that can't happen. There's no way a small hole can "let flame in", that doesn't happen. First off, when heating there's no draft to 'pull it through'. Too much resistance through the load and midsection/stem for casual air flow. And even if you forced air through (say by sucking on the MP) no fire gets in.

Spark Arresters work this same way. Old time miners lamps, that used open flames in mines full of methane and coal dust (explosion waiting on a spark) used fine brass mesh so fresh air (with oxygen) could get in to feed the flame, and the light out, but not let enough heat out in any single place to spark a news story. Spark Arresters on off road vehicles work the same way, keeping sparks (which can include flaming bits of carbon) from setting the world on fire. Spark Arresters on steam locomotives work in a similar but different manner. In many cases the hot gasses and embers are forced into a swirl so they impact cooler metal (which is why so many 'smoke stacks' bell outwards, there's baffles inside that part. The idea is the same, rob the heat and stop the combustion cold (pun intended).

In an ill spent youth I spent some times at sea (doing service, not a Merchant Seaman). This included bulk tankers which carry all manner of cargoes, including raw and refined petroleum products and lampblack (very fine carbon used in dyes, inks and such, very explosive dust). Crews have to do 'bitter work' (washing the tanks down with superheated sea water, hence the name). This means suiting up in 'space suits' with air lines and entering the tanks to hose them down into the coffer dams (3 foot walls in the bottom of the tank to keep the cargo from sloshing about and tipping the ship over in storms and stuff) so it can be pumped out. Imagine a fire hose in a basketball stadium. You use a combination of steam and high pressure salt water to wash the ceiling and walls onto the floor. You need light, right? Enter the air lights. Air lines are run down and a sealed lamp with a turbine, generator and lamp attached. It uses mesh vents for the exhaust in case of a burn out (which happens a lot). A 'blow out' can breech the hull and sink you fast. Won't do the guys working inside a lot of good either. Serious stuff.

Has @M0J0 or anyone else just torched the middle section?

My vapmans holding up wonderfully, my torch marks haven't grown a bit.. But my middle section is still light pear oiled or not, my reclaim is creeping up the side around the filter.

I was thinking of doing a two tone of my own! Oiled ring and torched med section, has this been done before? If so can I see for some inspiration.

Hello there!

In my opinion as long as you are having even the slightest rattling you are ok. No big stress will be handled by the pipes if you have rattling. I have also noticed the difference between different mouthpieces. I have pom ones and the box tree and they fit differently in the middle section so you have different total length of vapman.

I wanted to stop the rattling completely so i am using a thin piece of leather(got it from spare elbow-ankle patch) and this makes my egg soundless. I love that,so the small leather part is always with me. The first thing i used was bubbly plastic(wrapping plastic) but the leather is a bit thinner and goes well with the character of the vapman. Wood+leather>wood+plastic :)

I haven't done one yet. Can you post a pic here of one you like?

I've looked at that and found no issue at all. It still has plenty of wiggle room in there. René knows his stuff!

All my Dark Chocolates have a charred middle section.

The dirty middle section is why I charred my first Vapman, well that and my grubby hand marks around the outside...

Of course @M0J0 is the master of the torch , but if you take your time you can get really good results, best advice I can give is go slow as it's easy to torch more if needed, but you cant untorch if you go too far.

Hi Mojo thanks for putting my mind at ease, I had a look for and couldn't find a quick sum up of Fibonacci Sequence - so apologies first to any mathematicians on here for probable inaccuracies! Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician who published a sequence of numbers where each is the sum of the previous two- 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,etc, this can be drawn as the Golden Spiral and can be found unexpectedly in nature such as Sprials in a shell or seeds in a sunflower. I didn't have anything particular in mind and can't justify the vas to order just yet just thought you may like idea.

Thanks, seeing it with the rings contrast was what I was wanting. I'm still unsure..

I forgot to mention I carved myself a MP yesterday afternoon, unsure what kind of wood (probably pecan). Used a 3/32" drill bit for the hole, would of liked to of made one longer but my bits aren't very long and without a drill press lining it up to be very long would prove difficult.

Yeah I started by just doing the middle section (as that was the dirtiest looking part) but at the time I was unsure myself on the look, so I thought well maybe if I do the MP also...still unsure...well fuck it I may as well do the rest lol and all charred I was happy with, personally I think all charred or all uncharred looks best or just the MP charred, but that's all personal preference.

Nice work on the MP and good luck

Hey guys,

Here a new forum member and fascinated for all the information that you share here. So i have a question, i'm a mflb user and tempted to buy a vp, but want to know if any of u use the vp in the "native" way?, i mean, without the mouthpiece

Sorry for my english (Castilian speaker)

Thanks!

Those look real nice, @UnshavenFish.

And your advice is spot on.

Start with the torch farther away and keep it moving.

Start with far and faster moving strokes and gradually get closer.

Another thing I highly recommend is to test your charming skills on a scrap piece of wood before going to town on your precious vapman. Still, keep in mind that different woods will char differently and different shapes as well - like flat test pieces vs round vapman parts...

Also, the idea is to heat the wood without setting it aflame. Try to roast it without ever setting it on fire - easier said than done, I know.

Hope this helps.

Yeah it's kind like spay painting, building up the layers to get the finish you want.

I tested with a piece of 2x4 never thought about the curves  those little bits under the springs were a real PITA to do

I always used the MFLB native. I think the VM native would be a bad thing. Based on the heat you can bring to our little friend, I would think you need the stem to cool the vapor. Could be wrong but I wouldn't try it.

Ok, I received 2 vapmans for crucible replacement.

They were in pretty bad shape. Seems to me that they had been subjected to too much heat and the inside was charcoal.

Although I was only charging for the crucible replacement, I got carried away and did a number on the two vapmans...

I'm going to have to charge extra for a restoration jobs like this from now on because it takes too much time.

I just can't leave a helpless vapman alone! Haha

I don't think you can see the "charcoalized" inside of the ring in the before pics, but here they are:

It's amazes me how the vapman still amazes me after more than a year of using it.

I now got 4 pieces in my surrounding.

That's like 2 gazillions percent increase rate.

In a YEAR!

And the marketing is done all by the vapman itself. Anyone who gets to know it, will most likely love it.

I received a small envelop from Switzerland containing mica washers. I'm planning to put one behind the middle section sceen tonight and give it a week or so to test.

Thanks @vapman for the chance to try these out free of cost!!
I got my envelope today as well. I had mentioned to René that I would like to also purchase some concentrate screens (I lost my screens somehow during a recent move) and if I could purchase them to be delivered in the same envelope. 3 screens came with the washers in the envelope, but I'm still waiting on that PayPal invoice.:uhoh: Incredible customer service and generous gesture to boot! Thanks, @vapman!
