Vaping Flowers Vs. Dabs which is healthier for you?

It seems cocentrates are healthier because of the loss of vegatative material. However there is a loss of the complexity of flower which i don't like. An extraction eliminates some of the effect along with what is less desirable.

Are you referring to terpenes that may be lost during the extraction/purging process? I heard a week or two ago on hash church skunkman sam was talking about reclaiming the terpenes during the extraction process so really nothing active was lost using his extractor, but I dont know if his tech is widely used or not. He is a bit tight lipped regarding his tech, but it seemed to sound as if the material was the same as the flower just concentrated and without the inactives.

@MinnBobber

If you have access to high quality flower why not try making some rosin for yourself at home?
I have recently started doing this and find the end result incredible!
All you need is a hair straightener, parchment paper and a vice or a clamp.

@lazylathe ,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm a little reluctant to try making rosin right now as my stash is so minimal. I'd hate to mess up any of my meager bud. In the future (near future?) I hope to possibly try pressing some rosin when I have a little more bud to work with.
It does intrigue me but living in a non-legal state makes it tougher to try.
Someday I will try it though....

Without meaning to pick on you; but for the umpteenth time, this is not the case with all concentrates. Well made concentrates have all that complexity and more. Taste a well cured perfume like full melt made out of whole unruptured trichomes and then try and tell me that flower is more complex :p

Too many people have not used good enough concentrates yet to make overall comparisons against flower. What I dab every time I take a dab is 100% better tasting than the flower that it came from, and I should know, I made it.

EDIT: @psychonaut skunkman sam tends to dab 99% gland head dry sift (6 star full melt). His technique for this is quite guarded, but best I can guess he is using some kind of ultrasonic agitation to automate the normally painstaking manual labor involved in sifting. I may be wrong. He is tight lipped as you say.

For trapping terpenes, there are many different ways and many extractors do this in solvent processing (cold traps, fractional distillation etc). Some of the ways of capturing these terpenes can result in oxidation and degradation/changes to the terps on the way. They will not necessarily taste the same as the flower in this case. However, as I say, full melt hashes have all of the flavor of the flower and then some depending on how you process. Rosin when produced and stored in the right fashion tastes so true to the flower that it is remarkable.

Yes full melt has the complexity i look for rosin less so but very good. The co2 and bho and others (clear) type where trrpenes are added back in are wonderful powerful clean but still are not as subtle so far for me. I have what the mj markets had in washington state and saw all the new technologies up until they closed.

I prefer the taste of flower.

I have a Dr. Dabber pen and use it occasionally with some wax. I've found that after two or maybe three draws on the pen, the concentrate is pretty much gone and I get this "yucky" (technical term), metallic taste.

To me, the pen is good if all you want to do is get baked. I also like the discreteness of the pen as I like to take it with me on walks.

But when I'm at home, I'm a "sipper" of flower all the way (though I will sometimes drop a little chuck of wax in my flower bowl).

As far as which is healthier for you, I suppose that would depend on how each "product" is manufactured. How was the concentrate made? were all solvents adequately purged? With flower, you want to know how it was grown. Was it grown organically? Were artificial fertilizers or pesticides used? Etc.
I love shatter (addicted)
40 watts in a GOON tank + MOD + EJUICE + KIEF + Dabs of concentrate = MAX COMA

FLOWERS are milder and I think they might be less abusive to our bodies?

Plenty of prime, home-grown, veganic flower to vape, but the shatter's running out and already jonesing.:mmmm: And it's the same flower as the shatter - the same plant, in fact.

Almost there...
@ Ataxian LMAO!!! Thanks BUD!!! That was awesome!!

As for shatter... bro you are living in the past!
Rosin is where it is at!!
You should start pressing your own from your own flowers!
It tastes so much better than the shatter i usually buy and it is expensive stuff!

You know I made it like crazy?
I do buy ROSIN for $20 per gram.
It will get cheaper!

The thing that concentrate fanboys forget is the tolerance and dependency issue. Every single dabber I know doesn't use herbs at all because it doesn't get them high anymore. Then when they have to quit or go on a t-break the withdrawal symptoms are so through the roof it's comparable to quitting harder drugs. It's easier said than done to microdose concentrates, it's a no-brainer to microdose flower. I don't care if well made full melt tastes better, it's not my game; besides, around here it's such a lottery obtaining properly made concentrates vs sketchy junk. I've never dabbed without having an irritated throat and bronchial tubes (scary when you feel the pain in your bronchial tubes). Vaping flower never irritates my respiratory system no matter how big the dose and a night's sleep eliminates the effects which is not guaranteed w/ dabbing, so I guess I'm just an imbecile rookie to the dab community which I'm fine with. And then they like to talk as if growing flower is the only thing that comes with risks that affect the safety of the end product, and somehow making concentrates never comes with any risks, lolz.
Keep in mind this is not a matter of “better” or “worse” – it's about what suits the individual's preferences and my dabbing friends can do whatever they want. But this is my preference and I don't need no BHO fanboys telling me my preference is inferior or less educated.

Extremely well said, and matches my experiences completely. I've spent the last week researching the interwebs on dabs and health etc, and it appears this is the common theme.

I've now begun the process of withdrawing from concentrates after only one week of light use, and it isn't fun, even with an abundance of flowers on hand.

I think i'll stick with solventless...rosin and distillate, but at vaping temps mixed with my herb in my Supreme, and only for a treat once in a while.

The latter here is a good idea man, keep it to solventless extracts from flowers of known providence :) It'll give you a lot more peace of mind. If you're buying solvent extracts there is a lot more risk involved, there's more that can go wrong in processing and especially in mass produced low cost solvent extracts, you just know that some unscrupulous extractors will cut corners to save a buck or some time.

What I've said above still stands though, there is a laundry list of us who use predominately concentrates who do not get sky-high tolerances. Man I had 3 .05g dabs all day yesterday! that is the literal equivalent of vaping 3 bowls in my haze (as in if I took that same flower and squished it, that is how many dabs of the same I'd have). You choose how much you dose. Your dose determines your tolerance. :2c: Concentrates are safer than the equivalent amount of flower vaped (as in enough flower to consume the same amount of resin/actives) if they are solventless extracts from the same flower.

Concentrates are not always safer than flower if your concentrate was made in a less than ideal way.

@herbivore21 I agree with you, but don't know how you do it. That is some serious self control, and I think that the majority don't have your iron will power.

What temps are you dabbing your rosin? Surely higher than flower vaping temps?

A very busy working life helps keep the doses down lol, I've been working around the clock lately! Don't become a scientist - choose life instead! :lol:

The temps question I have addressed before so let's start with some premises:

1. The temp readout on an e-nail controller is not the temperature on the dish of your nail, which could be up to HUNDREDS of degrees lower than dial temp.

2. The variation between dial temp and dish temp shifts according to the kind of nail you are using. Any nail with inserts (like the Liger) rather than a directly heated dish (like a d-nail halo) will also require much higher dial temps to get the desired dish temp.

3. The age and state of your heater coil as well as it's dimensions will change the relationship between dial and dish temp. So will different controllers.

4. Answering your question, if I were to use my SiC halo as an example (I don't have temp charts to so easily use with my other nails lol), I tend to use that one at 500 on the dial, which is 450f on the dish. The relationship between dial and dish temp changes on the same nail as the temp is driven up. A SiC halo that is 500 at the dish will read 570 or so on the dial (if using a d-nail 1.2 controller and flat coil). SiC tends to have a closer dial to dish temp ratio because SiC very effectively gets the heat across the dish. Other materials will vary considerably.

SiC.jpg

Now we are left with 450f at the dish. This is barely hotter than high temp flower vaping. Remembering that concentrates are higher boiling than flowers because the combustible material has been removed - simply put, there isn't anything to combust in what I'm dabbing.

As I've said many times, the concentrate vapor that I inhale is infinitely smoother and less irritating on my throat and lungs than vaping the flower that I made it from :)

Yet you still have time for us here at FC....and that other bizarro world place you are now at ;)

Always appreciate your knowledge and contributions!
I consider it paying it forward brother, so many of you guys here have also helped me with information over the years :D

I'll always make time to help people in our community. There isn't nearly enough help out there for cannabis patients/users!

That's very helpful, thanks. Do you have any thoughts on the "Stabilized Up-temp Procedure"? Need to upgrade heater to try it.

Hey SHATTER SHATTER give me some SHATTER

It's all gone. :cry: Want to let last harvest freeze-dry a few more days before QWET. Thinking about trying rosin with flowers from previous harvest - very well-cured now. Need to research cheap method for first try.

Seems like a whole vape bag inhaled over two or three deep breaths is similar in effect to a tiny dab. It's not too bad, drawing vapor through waterpipe.

TALL POPPY Syndrome = TPS

My MOD at 40watts + JUICE = 420 CIVILIZED

OK = ROMAINE ROSIN = POWERFUL
40Watts = FLAVOR CITY no = TPS
CHEATING = KIEF IN THE E-JUICE

420 in CALIFORNIA = CIVILIZED

So amazing!

SMALL HANDS = SHS
Huge = H

H + SHS = TPS

Love's me my Herodotus, working out the math.

Can't get strong enough hits with e-juice lately. Need to work on ratio. Also, clearly less healthy than flowers or concentrate. Delicious and very convenient.

Huge plus small hands equals tall poppy syndrome... :sherlock:

If you're getting into concentrates with a high tolerance to flower, you're bound to reach a similar plateau.

This is so true for me personally, especially since I just started concentrates a week ago. I'm already there. And I didn't go "crazy" with the dabs either......but yesterday was my last day, and now i'm back on flower and will never dab regularly again, and then I gotta say the same for flower lol

I was right with ya til the last few words. Can't see myself quitting flower, but have in the past and may need to again temporarily to climb the ladder. MAJOR RESPECT to anyone who realizes they need a break and takes it.
