If we use this basic truth and try to justify the world with it then we quickly realize that it can not be true because if it were everything in existence should be the result of an infinite number of actions/reactions and therefore not exist (you can not have an infinite number of anything as you would never reach destination)

In doing this we see that by this logic the number of proceeding steps would have to be a finite one and must therefore have a starting attribute, a beginning so to speak.

This argument very quickly becomes one that is in favour of religion as the only real solution left to the logic is to say an external force put the entire process into motion.

Big fan! Haven't read much, been meaning to for ages, but from what I've gathered it's basically about being happy and not living in fear of death and God/s. With the media being pretty much based on fear-mongering these days I think lessons on Epicurus should be mandatory for all!

Having been a student of history for many a year now I can say I have noticed the same many times mate! To put it oh so academically, the same shit just goes round and round.
People (driven by the news etc) always get crazy about certain events that occur when they need to realise that it's probably happened a hundred times before, just in slightly different circumstances.

It's actually quite comforting in one sense as you can always refer to history to help you through problems. On the other hand it's a tad upsetting that humanity seems to be stuck in such a rut!
Undoubtedly there has been much progress in many areas, but the same basic world events and trends happen over and over down the centuries.

The reason that history seems to repeat itself is because the "passions" of human beings really have not changed over time. Sure things change slowly, we have the football stadium now instead of feeding Christians to the lions, but the basic motivations are the same. Violence, tribalism, sex, greed, etc . . . the root passions stay the same.

Its hard to speak so generally. Every person has different values and some people, my self and many others, hold values in high regard. Morals are similar to values and I think that is what we are talking about here. There are people who choose to ignore them. Luckily we have freedom of will. We can only hope that others will treat us with the same respect we have for them.

Now we have more people and technology. Now more than ever our forms of entertainment are filled with violence, promiscuous sex and drug use. This is permitted casually and will likely affect the behavior of some people. i.e. Kids blaming grand theft auto video game for criminal behavior. I think the values of our youth have been widely effected by the Internet as well. The images that our being put into our children's minds we need to be careful about. They can get on the internet read about various drugs and decided they are safe to ingest afer a bit of research with plenty of instructions on how to make them or ingest them.
I remember personal computers first became popular in about 1995-1997. This and the widespead popularity of the internet changed the stimulus we have been inputing. I recently read in the newspaper that white supremecists (nazis) congregate on the net similar to how we vaporists do.

There are still few who attempt and succeed at keeping their focus strong and their values clean. Kind of like Hank Hill on King of the Hill. Haha I like cartoons.

There have been people who damage the lives of others with complete disregard since as far back as we can go in the history of humans.

The lifestyle we are living now is much more modern. The history of mankind goes back along way. The inventions of agriculture and the printing press ushered in a technological boom that eventually resulted in digital technology. With so many people on this planet you can only expect a variety of people; many who are crude and have weak values. Most people have a conscious that tells them right from wrong even in this day and age. That won't stop them from consuming stimulus that likely doesn't live up to their values. Many people have a struggling willpower.

We should all be setting a high bar on our own internal values and make it a point to leave a lasting benificial impact on this planet. By communicating, sharing, and trading with another we can form a brotherhood of respect and productivity.

I give the human race about 300-400 more years (or less) before someone develops a disease that gets loose and wipes out civilization, or something to that effect. We will find a way to wipe ourselves out. I highly doubt it will be something that is out of our control.

i more or less agree with that but you did leave out many positive passions. compassion is the missing ingredient to make it "better" imho, however we are creatures of habit and like to follow the flow, lazy i guess...just like water, electricity, etc...if the flow is less compassion that is what we breed/teach and its hold becomes more apparent as time moves on.

i dont think you will spread compassion around until others truly accept the reality that we are all the same (even assholes) and all life on this planet is directly connected, when that happens you typically care more since it becomes personal to you.

i feel the decline of humanity began when we started removing key elements of life out of our thinking and being and replaced them with "push button feel good experiences" to facilitate an ignorant state of well being.

I told this story before, but in this context, I think it's worth repeating.

Back in the early 70's, I had an experience that is as clear today as it was back then. I had a friend who had a house that sat right on the sand in Malibu. Spent a lot of weekends there partying and whatnot. Anyway, during one of those parties, I dropped some acid (kind of a typical thing really), but this time it was life changing. Music playing, lots of people, mostly close friends partying inside the house and I wanted to get a breath of fresh air so I walked out on the deck with his two labs, Melvin and (forgot the other ones name). So there I was, hanging out with these two dogs on the deck, no one else around. It was a clear night with a full moon, and as I was looking up at that moon, something extraordinary happened. All of a sudden, there was this grid of lines. Actually, it wasn't a grid, but one line that went from the moon, to one of the trees, to another tree, to Melvin, to me, to the other dog, to another tree, and another, and to a potted plant and then back to the moon. It became as clear as day that everything was interconnected and totally dependent upon one another for it's particular existence in time. Those lines were not wispy or etherial in any way but in fact were just very clearly defined white interconnecting lines. I looked down at the dogs who were both intently looking up into the sky and seemingly looking at the same thing I was. Those lines then just slowly faded away and me and my two lab companions slowly turned around and went back inside with me having the knowledge of knowing, really knowing, a bit more than I did the day before.

yes, sadly i think so. with the rate of weapon/military advancement, won't be too difficult for someone (JDSupreme said 300 years, i think maybe within 2 generations) for someone armed with a briefcase sized bomb to take out a city, or more. so much easier to destroy.

We live in a system of 8 planets, or 9 if you include pluto, plus the sun. What if at some point there were more planets and the sun was actually smaller in size. In terms of being more planets before Mercury which radiated around the sun's gravitation. The planets before Mercury, Venus and ours, who may have been closest to the sun at the time respectively. These closest to the sun could have had life on them at some point or not. At some point some how the sun began to expand and eat up the other planets pulling them into the sun and burning up. Thus the sun becoming of the current size we now have. Throughout the course of time of course of who knows how many countless eons. These lost planets may have been home to extraterrestrials whom in habit the deep space which we know nothing about. Perhaps that is why they return or re-appear to see if we may have the same outcome with our planet as they once did. Or I may just well be to darn high :}.

Wow what an amazing thread! how did i overlook it?

On the topic of interconnectedness I believe that we are all from the original source as in the spark that makes us alive is all really from the same place. as a result we actually have a lot in common with each other and need to try to understand each other more.

On the topic of us being like a growth on this planet. I also agree with that. we are a misguided lot and we have insane people running the world for their own gain, not the betterment of the planet. We need to unite an take the power back.

The movie the idiocracy makes a good point. If you haven't seen it check it out. good for a laugh or too also. I think we need to encourage education and learning more. Why pick on a nerd? They can teach us things!

I am spiritual, not religious. i have looked at several different religions, trying to find the one for me. but nothing stuck. I always had questions about contradictions. or things that seemed to have no valid reason for being a rule. I must understand to be able to accept.

so that said I have done a lot of soul searching in my short time here so far. here is how i see it.

Rule #1. There is no one else out there that you can trust/rely on 100%

and i mean 100%. By this I mean you must rely on yourself first. no one else will do this for you. If you think someone is 100% then understand that the rule "there is always an exception to the rule" is the rule that lasts the test of time. I believe that there are lots of good people out there and that most are in fact good people. however there are also toxic people too. beware.

Rule #2. life is only about the experience.

Think of your life as a linear time line. you could have branched off in any number of directions, but the decisions you made have taken you on this path you are on. (of course you can change this with your future decisions) when you die your experience in this lifetime is over. you have hit stop on the record button. now if you compare this tape to all the other lives that have ever existed; I bet just as snowflakes, you will never find one that is exactly the same as another. as a result we learned different morals, ethics and values. our perception of this world is slightly different from one another.

here is where my idea gets far out... brace yourselves!

I believe that all living things have an electrical force inside them that is the thing that gives us life. without it. I am just a useless mass of elements displayed in a peculiar arrangement. What im talking about are our souls. the thing inside of me that makes me who i am!

when we die our soul is released from it's physical vessel. and just as water droplets collect and pool to form the oceans there is an ocean of "souls" (energy if you prefer) that are in fact one collective library of knowledge and understanding. we all merge into one and provide our tiny droplet of perspective to the ocean.

because of this I don't think there is any "god" looking out for us. It doesn't care when or how we die. death is the actual "return to source" if you will. life is a short vacation away from the source.

and who knows, maybe we are (the ocean of energy) just a program running simulations for a greater good? being bound to see the world from the dimensions we are constrained within makes outward understanding difficult! lol

so all that said, I say live your life the way you want to experience it. I hope you are happy with the story you logged along the way so far? i'm still in progress myself.

time is also an interesting concept. a bacteria lives 15-45 minutes. another creature 6 months, another 5 years. us 70-90 or so.. but to each creature this time span is their entire life! imagine 15 minutes being the same to you as 70 years!
