Underdog Log Vapes

I have found that the Air Core is PERFECTLY dialed in for use with the stainless steel tips. Sometimes I hit it while it's warming up and get two or three puffs from one ss stem. I should play around with the voltage to find that spot, cause it's pretty cool. Cooks it very evenly and the vapor tastes so yummy. Never really got into low temp vaporizing before, but I think I am sometimes with the Underdog.
It can do glass at 12v, but it doesn't extract it quite as deep as I prefer. Maybe I'll pick up a 15v power supply at some point so I can push the dog up to like 12.5 or so and try glass stems with it.

I love the underbutter. I was using straight bees wax before. While that works, it takes a lot more effort on my part to work cold bees wax into a warm piece of wood. Somehow the ss stems from UD stay cleaner than my HI ss stems.

The oversized NonG works awesome with my HI...I have been loading the huge bowl up with avb and going through a 18mm sherlocl. It's pretty awesome. I didn't know I would enjoy the regular nylon direct draw so much. I think I want to try out one of the wood stems UD offers...I really like the little curve where the lips go on the ss lite and nylon stems. It looks like the wood ones have a similar mouthpiece shape, so I am sure I'll love them.

@Diggy Smalls Yeah, the wood stems have those curves. I really like them, although I've been using this glass DD a bunch since I got it... Can fit bigger loads and all. I think I'll add an oversized NonG to my order, think I'll have one of everything then.

The silicone stems actually look really cool, I'm just worried I'll get annoyed because know they're going to get dirty quick.

Hi everyone! I've been a lurker and dog owner for about 8 months now and decided to finally join FC and post my setup. It's an amazing product and has completely changed smoking for me!

I had a lot of issues early on with power supply cables wearing out, so I just started making my own extension cables with screw terminal barrel plugs, banana plugs, and stranded/shielded copper wire. This takes the strain off of the power supply, and they have been just as durable as (if not more so than) manufactured power supply cables and are very quick and easy to repair.

I plan on possibly switching to solder barrel plugs to support a thicker gauge wire and provide a more stable connection while still being cheap and easily maintainable. Also because I have issues with the screw/spring terminal barrel plugs holding their connection when I used anything thicker than 22 AWG.

Does anyone know of better potential barrel plug connectors, possibly with larger conductors?

Also just recently purchased a Tekpower 15V VVPS, which was an amazing investment. But now I have a strong urge to just buy a multiple-output VVPS so I can run multiple dogs at once...

Here's my Blue Pine UD setup:

Nice setup you've got there, thanks for posting it!

I like the DIY cables.. definitely the way to go if a person is handy as you clearly are.

So you're looking for a more heavy duty 2.1mm plug to use on your wire? I haven't tried this specific one but you might give it a go. With a 5A/24V rating it's probably got fairly beefy terminals.

Today is UnderDog day at Vito's.
Welcome home, my little Twigs!

Awesome post Vito glad to hear you're getting back in the swing of things. Great to see you've still got quite the Dog pack as well, wasn't sure if you'd still had any.

If you need some stems I've got a bunch of 2nds of various types, I'd be happy to send you a handful if you'd like. Just let me know what kinds you like the most and we'll get you set back up. :peace:

Thanks! With the power supply nailed down, the only thing I foresee ever having an issue is the snap ring holding the core in place (and the heating element, I'm guessing, when it finally wears out). It's already starting to warp and shift a bit, especially since it's a softer wood.

And thanks for the suggestion! I didn't think to look at higher amperage/voltage tolerance to find stronger terminals. I've also never worked with a plug without terminals and strain relief - are the wires meant to be soldered directly to the barrel on the sleeve and pin?

Yeah that Dog is a super, super soft wood so it will age that much more quickly. It's a nice wood though and it's super cool that it was cut and milled for us by the Zapman himself on their farm.

As far as the cable and plugs go - I'm not totally sure since I haven't used that particular one but I assume like most similar ones that it has solder terminals inside the plastic section (that should screw off). For strain relief you'd just want to add your own shrink wrap (of whatever stiffness you wanted) to the last inch or however long you want (again just personal preference). I like to stiffen up 2-3" when making cables like that but that's just me.

Yeah, it's an amazing soft feel and the blue (which is on the opposite side, mostly) is really pretty. I was definitely prepared for the trade-offs on that and it hasn't disappointed in the least. I didn't realize where the "Zap" came from, but I'm really glad to know that now!

Ah, gotcha. This particular one (PP3-002A) doesn't show the solder terminals in the data sheet. But this is the same part, but with those terminals (PP3-002AH), so maybe I'll try that one? Maybe I'm just misreading them. It should be easy enough to try some of those based on their current tolerance and terminal size. And that strain relief was right in line with what I was thinking. Now I'm just kinda curious how the first one is typically used, though. Maybe so other physical terminals can be attached? Or just for larger wire gauges/solid wire?

I have plenty of 2/C in 14-22 AWG, so I'm gonna get some new components and experiment some more.

Thanks again for the reply! I love the vape and this information is super helpful.

EDIT: Didn't intend to thread-jack this into electronics talk. But I'm done, promise. :)

Have there ever been decals with the 'radiant log' design that's on the cards? (as seen in fresham's VVPS pic) I love that design, would love to plaster it onto a few things I own.

Ah, good question. Those 'business cards' are actually 'business card stickers'. That's a sticker on the colored side (front) and a business card backing (the same design printed on the back cardstock).

Awesome, glad I mentioned the Zap source then.. didn't realize you didn't know that.

Yeah I looked at the data sheets for both those but only the second one shows the exploded view. I suspect that both are the same internally (other than terminal thickness, etc) since the only real difference I can see is the first is spec'd at 5A and the second 8A. Only one way to find out though.. order 1 of each. :science:

Are you serious? I never tried to peel mine because it felt like card stock! Haha.

Yep!

Lol, I wondered how many people would find that they were also stickers. I thought about putting "Other side is a sticker" on the business card side, but ultimately decided against it for simplicity's sake... Maybe I should reconsider?

The way they are now is good. As a Canadian, the thought of giving someone a card that said 'Other side is a sticker' when I'd already peeled the sticker off and stuck it to my laptop...well it's mortifying.

@underdog I just realized that my power supply's max output is 2A and my UD only draws ~0.65A at 12V, my mini ~0.57A. At 12.5V it's still under ~0.70A, so I should be able to run my mini in parallel with my UD on the same power supply! Any suggestions on a splitter setup/components? I will just split this source 2 ways to be safe, but I'll likely get a better power supply in the future and want to setup a 3+ split. Do you have a star topology splitter setup for your test bench, or something like that?

Hey all! My surgery went well! Apparently my septum was at a 90 degree angle and beginning to decay, so it's a good thing she got to it when she did. Now recovering, eating lots of juice pops and JELL-O.

Oh, also, I no longer have a uvula. So that's cool!

My log is all paid for and ON ITS WAY!!! I'm beyond excited to try it after recovery. Thanks for reading, all. Take care!

Now you're talking!

I do have a bunch of different pre-made cables laying around that I use for quick little setups on the test bench, I'll post a link. For bigger or more long term setups I usually just make a wiring harness for that particular purpose to save and reuse as needed. In a case like yours I'd probably make a banana plug to dual 2.1mm cable (so split it right out of the PS) and then run standard extensions (like the ones we sell/use/include with Dogs) from the split to each Dog. To allow for different output voltages in this setup I'd probably stick one of our LED Dimmers on one of the legs between the split and the extension if that makes sense?

I use a lot of things like this when making temporary setups. Either as-is or modified to to fit the need.
