@ darkrom - I'll be working on your CF piece once I get back and settled in, I'll keep you posted.

I'm not sure if I'm sad or thrilled that you can't see the little dance I'm doing thinking about the CF twig idea. :brow:

Hey guys, I just got my aqua vape, and had some trouble getting the end of it to fit in to the UD stem. darkrom said he just puts it into the glass stem adapter silicone that dave gives you, is that any different from the normal stems? Also, I think I've read somewhere in this thread about "thin-walled" and "thick-walled" stems. Is this something that dave used to do, but only provides one variety of now, kinda like the 1/4 core?
For now, I made the aqua vape fit by making a small slit on the UD stem to make it open wider. But this is far from a permanent fix, and I'm looking for a more secure way to connect the UD and aqua vape.

@Barca

Dave's glass stems come with a different size 3/8" tubing which has a thinner wall. It is much more flexible and able to stretch while still making a nice seal. This is what use for all my glass connections. I only use the regular stems when doing dry hits. I buy the tubing in 3' lengths from Dave so I can cut my own stems and fittings.

Do you have a full size UD core or a 1/4" one (like a b-day vape)?

The stem tubing for the full size UDs (3/8") should fit the AV nicely but the tubing for a 1/4" core UD wouldn't be able to fit without slitting it or something like you've described.

Ok, thanks gonzo. I guess I'll have to order that when Dave gets back. I can't wait to try my new toy tonight, time to see what everyone has been raving about!

does the 3/8" core accept 5/16" SS roasting tubes like on the TT and CRZ?

Some will and some won't.. :brow:

I switched over to a larger ID tubing a while back and they will fit in those ones but not the smaller ID (thicker wall) tubing of the older style. Some of the revised cores are using the old tubing so it's not as simple one-size-fits-all answer.

How many old 3/8 cores would you say are even out there?

Hmmm.. maybe a hundred or two? I've still got a bit of the thicker tubing working it's way out of my supply chain so there will continue to be new ones made with it until it's gone, probably within the next month or two.

I've been using my new portable to give my UD a break and just because I've been playing with my new toy lol. Tonight I hit the UD with the aqua vape and just love it. No matter what new gizmo I have to play with on the go, the UD still remains champion of this household :D

but as long as it fits, the SS tip would fit into the heater port right? like would a PD stem fit? I could have sworn I have seen this answered before, I just can't find it through the 90 something pages

Edit: I found some info on page 54, I misunderstood you and thought you misunderstood me and thought I was talking about fitting the metal tip into the silicone. If that makes any sense. I have one of your newest twigs, I got it before you left on your trip. Does that mean I have the one that'll fit?

@ scottio - if you can send me a pic of the top of your vape I can tell you which size tubing it is.. that's about the easiest way I can think to answer your question for sure.

Was there a particular reason you switch to the thinner walled core tubing? I like both but was just wondering if there was a reason for the switch.

sorry, don't have a camera. the thickness is like this:

as opposed to this

Gonzo, my guess for the switch is that the thinner metal heater port has a smaller metal mass so it retains less heat, making conduction vaping that much harder.

You have the new version Scottio. The stem should work with your if I'm not mistaken. Dave should chime in and confirm.

Thinner tubing transfers less heat to the stem (a good thing) and it's a bonus to be compatible with the other log dude's stems. I had been considering changing for a while then an opportunity came up to buy a few grand worth of thin tubing for a fraction of that. Couldn't pass it up so I grabbed it even though I still had a bunch of the old stuff.

I think I'm down to maybe 20 cores left with the old thick stuff so once that's all gone it'll be the thin stuff in all new pieces..

Now I'm confused lol. Does that mean there is 2 different styles of 3/8" tubing, and only 1 style will work with my core? I thought I had everything figured out and the more I read the more confused I get. Are we sure today isn't a Monday?

He was talking about the inner diameter of the heater port Darkrom. Some logs use stems that are inserted in the heater port instead of going around it like with the UD, it only matters if you want to try out one of those stems.

[h]I'm baaaaaack![/h]

My trip was an exhausting yet great success and I am now officially back. I picked up some wood though not as much as I would have liked, I'll get some pictures when I can. Eager to get back on the UD horse and get stuff going again. Apparently a ton of rain while I was gone led to some minor shop flooding so I've got some cleanup to do but I'll be back in operation shortly.

Anyone who was waiting to send a piece in for exchange or repair can now do so at your convenience, if you want to do that and send me a message to let me know that'd be great. I will be trying to catch up on messages and whatnot in the order they came in so be patient and I'll get to yours soon I'm sure. If patience isn't your strong point you can always email again.

@ scottio - the picture you posted on the bottom shows the older style thick tubing, the thinner stuff is about 1/2 (maybe a bit more or less) the thickness (of the wall of the tube not the overall diameter) of that. If it looks thinner than what you posted it must be the thin stuff.
