Underdog Log Vapes

Alright hope that wasn't too much rambling on the nature of wood. :D
There can never be too much rambling on wood!! :razz:

On another note: I sold my Underdog this weekend. It was just working TOO well, looking TOO pretty, and generally making my day to day life too...amazing. So, I sold it to one of my best friends and finally turned my first combuster!! Totally worth it as he was getting particularly wrecked by smoking. (Always coughing, constant sore throat, sick often, unfulfilling high, etc). He's wanted one for a while now, but didn't have a strong enough urge to purchase one himself (lazy stoners!!) so I decided to sell him mine for a great deal.

Now it's time to re-up. :evil: Considering getting a custom dog this time around. Dave, will I have to produce/send my own wood (:brow:) or could we discuss creating something for your own selection?

Feeling reeeeaaaaal naked without my pup on my nightstand. :rip:

Wood in general does indeed move as it gains or loses moisture so you're probably not crazy. All the wood we use is stabilized in that it's either kiln dried or air dried for years so this is minimized but never totally eliminated. Knots are tricky because the grain is interrupted so they can move more or less than normal wood and in hard to predict ways, I regularly see them change shapes, etc over time.

Alright hope that wasn't too much rambling on the nature of wood. :D

@underdog -- Cool. Now that it's confirmed that I'm not crazy, I think the knot itself has lengthened, and then it sort of trails down the length of the vape (kinda in a tornado-ish looking way). I noticed this a little while ago, and I was pretty sure that initially, the knot was discrete and not flowy like this, and that it changed, but thought that I had perhaps just not noticed it before. Seems like it's gotten bigger since then, which cemented that yeah, it's changing. It also feels rougher and looks darker and has more lines in it, and more rings surrounding it-- or perhaps the rings are just darkening, as opposed to more. Anyway, the back of the vape, which used to be kind of plain and light, compared to the rest of it, is starting to get quite a bit of character! And not at all too much rambling on the nature of wood -- very interesting stuff and I asked for it. I've potentially rambled too much about what my UD is doing.

Sorry for the uninformed question, but I've been using an SSV and an Arizer Solo for over 2 years now and am thinking about branching out....none of the commercial vapes out there seem to offer anything new that I don't already get with my current vapes.

I've always heard of log vapes being apparently amazing and top tier, and the Underdog has always been the name I have heard other than the discontinued purple days...but I also have heard some things about log vapes being easy to have combustion in if you are not careful (which I do not want to do at all), as well as having to maintain them and worry about humidity stuff..

If I take the plunge, I'll probably just settle for one of the basic ones for sale on the Underdog site itself since I'm not too picky at this moment about a crazy wood type, but are my worries that big of a deal or are they easy to manage?

@Toastface_Killah - I don't find that it takes any effort at all to not combust. Not even sure how I would go about combusting with this equipment (short of modifying it) if I were to try. Am I missing something? My UD is pretty new to me (though it doesn't feel that way at all!), so I don't have experience with wear due to the elements, and I'm not sure if that's something that warrants concern, but I can't imagine that maintenance could be much easier than what the UD requires. I even like waxing it, which takes like one minute, and isn't like a constant need or anything. I wouldn't fret about either of the things you brought up.

@KidFated. - I know how that is :\ Also, I feel like I break things in waves. I won't break anything for a while, and then I'll break a series of things, and walk around with glass in my foot for a few months.

@Toastface_Killah - hi and welcome to the community. I do think Log Vapes are a great class of vapes and a frequently overlooked one at that. Obviously I'm a bit biased as usual but I think Underdogs are very easy to maintain and basically require no work other than not abusing them too much and cleaning ones stems and the stem cleaning isn't even technically a requirement.. I know plenty of people who don't bother lol. Moisture is a non-issue unless you live somewhere with a truly massive relative humidity and plan on leaving an UD turned off for months on end and even then it's shouldn't really be a problem to be honest. Combustion shouldn't be an issue either, if you combust with an Underdog you're either doing something wrong, your Pup setup needs adjusting or in the case of a few people I know you're doing it on purpose. :lol:

You should have zero worries! Except breaking stems! (My fault)

@underdog @catbird
I don't even wanna start to explain, today is just not my day. :/

If you were to pick up a cheap little glass cutter and a propane torch you could cut that stem down, flame polish the edges and turn it in to a Shortie GonG. :)

::edited to add::

Ooops, forgot I had another picture to share. I was going thru some cutoffs (short pieces of leftover wood) in the shop the other day and found a special one I'd 'lost'. I decied to turn it into a nice little small traveling Dog for myself. Some of you 'old timers' around here might recognize it as the remainder of the special piece that went to our good friend @Abysmal Vapor way back in the day. Enjoy!

I am lovin' the changes in my dogs coat after a few months it's also gotten quite a bit darker with the grain and accents showing through with really beautiful details that weren't visible when I got it.
She's not getting older she's getting better.

@KidFated. Yesterday was break stems day down here too. One simple glass stem gone, the first glass I've broken and then a couple hours later one of my gongs bit the dust on the cement patio for the rest of the night I used a wood roasting tube just to be safe.

@underdog - What a nice looking travel-sized vape. I have friends who make these beautiful wooden cups/mugs, and this reminds me of a lot of their creations. Actually, once I came across the existence of log vapes, the cups are what I was reminded of. I really dig all the hand-crafted wooden objects in my life, and how much love the people I know who work with wood seem to have for their craft. I think I felt immediately connected to log vapes because of these experiences, which have definitely gotten me into wood.

@RUDE BOY - Good to hear from someone else observing their piece darkening/changing. I love the changes!

Hey Scott, sorry I didn't get to it earlier but I just answered your email regarding this question. :)

Since other people might be wondering as well though the answer is 'yes' but only for UD users, the price we're charging for this is currently $29.99 and includes Priority Shipping.

We're thinking about whether or not we'll make them available to non-UD users in the future as well but for now we aren't.

For now any UD user who wants to buy one separately just needs to contact us directly and we'll send you a PayPal invoice for them.

Thanks for the reply! My last question I guess then before i pull the plug would be, should i go for the tiniest one available on the site if im trying to skirt around the ~15-45 minute heatup times I hear about as best as possible? I only ask because half my year i'm on the go somewhat and can't leave the unit on 24/7 like I hear is suggested; i really want a log vape and the only thing in my way for making it my daily driver seems to be the chance of a long heatup..

That mini Underdog looks absolutely amazing! The wood is beautiful and the shaping really helps to bring that beauty out. What a stunning piece. Have you thought about offering that size as an option on the site or do you think making the piece so small might cause some potential problems with operation or reliability?

@KidFated. Thing's could always be worse, you could be a total butter fingers like me. I've only had my pup for about 4 months and two GonGs have already been sacrificed to the glass gods. I'm not quite in @RUDE BOY's league however. Two in one day, that's impressive.

@Toastface_Killah I'don't know about other's but my UD tends to take about 10-15 mins to warm up to operational temperature so I just plug it in when I get to my mate's house. Then by the time I've said hello to everyone and got myself settled it's ready to go. I don't tend to leave it on if anyone isn't planning on using it again in the next 30 mins or so(he's a social creature). I hope that helps.

Yes the smallest/lightest density pieces have the fastest heat up times, for those I usually allow 10-20 minutes. Once you find a routine most people hardly notice the wait as it gives them time to load stems, etc. These things don't heat up as fast as a portable (obviously) but I think they get the job done nicely for most people and they really shine when it comes to efficient use of material. I'm working on adding 20 or so more Dogs to the website as well, if all goes well they'll be up before tomorrow eve so you might wait and see what's in that new batch before you buy. :2c:

@Richy - hey man long time no talk! I make quite a few small pieces like that for custom orders but not very often for the website. Those little Dogs make really nice pieces to be used session to session but not so much for 24/7 use as it exposes the power jack to too much long term heat. :peace:

I have always wondered why the star washer on my wild oak dog was missing teeth, and I don't know why I never asked until today haha.. It turns out that's just because it's a gap-toothed dog LOL :D.. Shit happens, and this dog lost a couple teeth, and then got a couple pulled for symmetry reasons :D.. It's cool to be able to tie a story to the wood, and solve the mystery of the missing teeth :D.. That just adds even more character..

Happy Friday!! We've got a new refresh up with plenty of good looking dogs, as well as a special on the Vintage Ash pieces. We've also added back the option to just get a standalone AC wall wart instead of VVPS. The VVPS options are now each $20 additional for Travel or Desktop size (and $30 for both).

These are my favorites from the new pieces (left to right: Bocote, Indian Rosewood, Big Leaf Maple):
